How do you turn this thing off? Nothing works. The sleep mode is not "off". It's incredible that there is no "Off" switch.
Unlock the home screen with the swipe. Now hold the power button until the menu shows up, Power off is there.

Just so you don't feel bad I had the same question. It seems that Verizon or HTC expect you to learn by random walk through frustration!
