Help-Samsung Knack Won't Start-Hard Reset?

My wife is using a backup phone because her smart phone broke. We got a Samsung SCHU 310 off of Craigslist. It is working fine until today. It will boot up but won't get past the Verizon logo. We tried taking battery out and no luck. Just keeps getting stuck. Any assistance is appreciated.

Having a phone is imperative, I'm sad to read that her original phone broke and now she is having concerns with her replacement device. But, I'm here to help! When the back up phone stopped working, was it doing anything in particular? How long did she have it prior to this problem?
