The "Android" hype

OK...

1st been a long time Verizon consumer.

My 1st "smartphone" was the BB STORM ( 1 the 9530 series, i believe ). I recently was able to upgrade to the Droid 2. I HATED the STORM w/ a passion. Simply due to the outdated nature of the OS vs the newer STORM 2.

I had hoped the D2 was gonna be the ubber-riffic phone compared to the Storm....

well....

been 3-months now and I have a few gripes about the Android OS.

1- the user interface is NOT very user friendly. maybe I got too used to my BB, but the BB OS was more user friendly and allowed me more control over my phone's OS features. 1- inparticular is the DANG sensitivity of the touch screen... ERRRRR

I have NO way to control it, cept by "locking" the screen. If i fail to do that, then lord know which app I will launch... ( butt-dialing the wife or my bud ).

2- the amount of STUPID unprofessional ring tones that come with the DRIOD as compared to the BB.

( I cant even find a decent BB theme for the D2 ). Mind you I use an R2-D2 ringtone theme I found off PHONEZOO. I prefer the beeps and whistles as oppossed to some ghetto flavored muzak...

3- And really why so many "home" screens ? ? ? ?

4- the touch screen typing is horrible, now I dont have "fat" fingers, but it seems when if by chance I wanna use the touch screen

I get like 3-4 letters at-once... about the same as the STORM, but these appear faster, again atleast with the STORM I was able to control the sensitivity to the screen.

I kinda miss my BB STORM... if VZW would have gotten the new BB TORCH I would do what I can to get that instead

UNLESS one of your VZW gurus on here can help me, understand and appreciate my "little buddy"....( insert R2D2 whistle )

OK I'm done fuss'n for now but I'm sure there are (atleast) a few others that feel the same way ? !

The OS is a learning curve, that will exist coming to any new platform. It was a learning curve for me going to windows mobile from palm os, and again from WM to Android.

The default is swipe to unlock. You don't have to actually put a password on it, but you won't dial if it is locked.

You're complaining that you have mulitple home screens? Don't use them if you don't want to, problem solved.

The virtual keyboard does take a bit of getting use to. I definitely type faster with the real keyboard.

Lastly, if you are so unhappy with it you should have returned it prior to the end of your 30 day period.

I definitely don't feel the same way...it sounds like you haven't taken the time to get to know what your phone can do.

1. What's not user-friendly about the interface? Some of it can be customized, or switched out completely--there are "home screen replacements" in the Android Market, for example. What problems are you having, exactly, with the screen's sensitivity? If you touch a spot, that's the spot the phone activates...so unless you're trying to launch an app before the home screens have stopped moving, random launching shouldn't be an issue. "Butt-dialing" should also never be an issue--the screen is intended to be locked when not in use so you don't activate apps in your pocket; the unlock button also needs a bit of pressure to activate so the phone doesn't get unlocked in your pocket. The only way to "butt dial" is if you're not locking the screen--that's not a device error, that's user-error.

2. Err...why don't you just get more if you don't like the included ringtones? There are free options in the Android Market. And if you get an app like Ring Droid, you can even use your own audio files (that you have on your computer) as ringtones or notification sounds.

3. ...what? On this point, it sounds like you're just looking for something to complain about. Multiple home screens is a feature. You can use them to sort your shortcuts in whatever way you want--have a screen just for contacts-related stuff, a screen for games, a screen for social networking, a screen for productivity....or sort them by how often you use certain apps. It's a lot more user-friendly than scrolling through an alphabetical list like on the Blackberry, or an Iphone.

4. You'll be so much happier if you stopped using the basic virtual keyboard and switched to SWYPE. Go to a text message and long-press on the text input field. Choose "Input Method", and then select "SWYPE." It takes a little bit of practice to get used to, but when used correctly, it's significantly more accurate and quite a bite faster than the regular virtual keyboard.
