Messages does not always show a new message icon in status bar

On my Moto Z Force, the Verizon Messages App does not always show the "new Message" icon on the top status bar. Sometimes it does show the icon, sometimes it doesn't. Frustrating since I have received a new text message but don't know until I unlock the phone and go directly into the Messages App.

P.S.  in the phone's notification settings, the Messages App is NOT silenced or blocked. Also in the Messages App itself, I have the correct setting checked: both Notifications and Heads Up Notification.
