Why Won't My Convoy 3 recognize an SD card?

I installed a Sandisk ultra plus 64 GB micro SD XC card into my son's Samsung Convoy 3 and when I go to Card Memory in settings, I get "No card memory, insert card". Do I need to format before installing? I cannot find anything on Verizon's site to instruct
