I cannot download photos from my S6 to my Mac, even though I've downloaded the required Android transfer software. My Mac doesn't recognize my device. I've been able to do it sometimes, but then I can't again. I don't get the USB icon on my phone.

Are you following these steps http://vz.to/29aOdvR to transfer the pictures to your Mac? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Android Transfer software from your Mac?
