I still have 1.5 weeks to return my phone. Was hoping to at least hear if the update fixed the current problems with the phone.
Whadaya gonna get that's better?
You know darn well the day after you return it, the update will be released.......
Maybe you'd like to take one for the team? haha....
Its going back on the 23rd, rather lose 35.00 dollars over having a phone the could have more problems after an update. Plus, they could release it on the 23rd and then delay it again" Droid 1 2.2 update memories".
For those who quote Moto's late summer release date. This link is to their official site and timeline. Please read the last paragraph before you run off to your lawyer's office if it is not released by the 23rd.
"The information contained herein is provided for information purposes only and is intended only to outline Motorola’s presently anticipated general technology direction. I was just going to return the phone, not lawyer up. I just look the info up this morning, because Verizon told me that a software update is suppose to be released to address the problems I called about. I have a 30 days to return the device and cannot get straight answer as to when a software update will be issued to address the current problems. I like the device, but choose not to take the gamble, when and if the issues will be addressed. I read the full statement, we are past late summer, 3 days summer is over. Someone could possibly have information related to the release of a software update, which could help me decide on returning or keeping the device.
Glocker,
My comment was not directed to you. I just know someone is going to use your link to quote Moto stating a late summer release on their official site and I wanted to point out the "usual" disclaimer at the bottom.
I understand there are those who don't want to take the risk that 2.2 will not fix the problems they are experiencing and it is great if you can return your phone by the 23rd and fall within your 30 day. I have no problem with that.
Me, I can wait (plus I am out of the 30 day). My phone works fine. But, yes, it would be nice if there was some sort of updating on the update. But, I do know that almost never happens with any of the manufacturers and providers.
Anyways here is to you having your X on the 23rd with the update.
I've just read some of the other post, and see why you posted that info. I just can't understand why, Verizon keeps saying that a software update will fix those problems, gives a date with no guarantee. If someone calls due to a problem with a device, they should say that's a know problem and as of right now we don't know when or if any software updates will be issued to correct the problem. Maybe start a known issues page, that informs the customer of how and when issues will be addressed. I hate it when a company gives a false date or timeline and then fails to provide info. as to why they failed to meet it. Hopefully updates to address current problems get managed better in the future.
I have to disagree that the X is not the premier at the current time. My wife's D2 doesn't hold a candle to the screen that we have. If they would just take off all that Moto crap there would be no contest even.
I know that sooner or later (probably sooner) the X is going to look like the D1 next to the greatest and latest but not yet.
I do wish they would honor their commitment for late summer. I have friends on the DX running 2.2 leak with very few problems. If they were that close a month ago, they should be done by now. (I chose to wait for the official update)
The technology in the screens is the same, so you must be talking about the size. Some users might find the X's screen makes the phone too big, so since the technology is the same I'd say it's a wash. Same with the physical keyboard, some like it some don't. But the D2 has more RAM than the X and it isn't spending (hopefully only) 2-3 months of it's 2 year contract period (if you bought on launch day like I did) running 2.1. The D1 is the phone that brought Moto back from obscurity and the D2 is it's natural successor as premier handset. The D2 will also get Gingerbread before the X, if the X gets it at all.
I have spent the better part of 2 months watching the denomination of Verizon and associated companies for not releasing an updated OS for the Droid X. I have also not gotten into the fray because I really don't want to deal with the verbal onslaught of character assignation that for sure will be directed at me for my views; but I can't take it any longer!
When you purchase any consumer product you make that purchase based on the performance of that product at time of purchase. NOT on what it could become it the future. To upgrade a product or not is a marketing decision that a company makes. It is not an entitlement that the company owes a consumer. It is a business decision.
Now for the performance issues. I completely understand that there are issues with the current phone. I have experienced many of the things that have been a bone of contention for many of the users of the X. The company says that it will be repaired when the devise is upgraded. OK, let them upgrade the phone and all will be right with the world.
Returning a devise that doesn't work falls under your warranty, not your 30 day money back guarantee. Under Verizon's terms and conditions they have to provide you with a devise of equal or greater value for the terms of the warranty. If you can't hear the phone ring the phone is defective and needs warranty repair.
This is a business transaction. Treat it as such and you'll be a whole lot better off.
OK, let the verbal abuse commence!
If the phone weren't marketed the way it was, I might could agree with you. But everything put out about the X before launch mentioned the upgrade to 2.2 that was seemingly imminent. Almost like they had 2.2 ready to go but wanted to put the finishing touches on it. In my mind, it was marketed as a 2.2 device. By the time I realized what was up, 30 days have gone by. Another thing is that, although the update would be nice, the bugs are what really are the problem. It's a double whammy that should be corrected by the update and then the phone should be what it was marketed to be. But I do agree with the spirit of what you are saying in that I hopefully will never let myself get snookered into this type of marketing again.

Actually you are wrong... both phones have 8gb internal memory, and the X comes with a 16gb card, and the D2 comes with a 8gb card. Both phones can go up to a 32gb card.
Burpootus, I have to disagree a bit. D2 does not have more RAM than the DX. Also, D2 was developed with Froyo 2.2 from the getgo so to launch it w/ 2.2 is not akin to a prince and his throne.
D2 i definately not the natural successor and lacks some key markers of a "successor" Like HDMI out.
Also, please indicate why the D2 will get Gingerbread and the X will not.

S'cuze me while I drop out of lurk mode -
Like many others, the promise of the 2.2 update and all it was purported to bring (Such as the ability to save/move programs ot the sd card and Flash.) were major factors in my decision to get the DX. However, *unlike* many others, I'm in no great hurry to see the update by "the end of summer, 2010."
As a SysAdmin, I am all too familiar with the results of installing software which is not exactly ready for primetime just because the masses are loudly whining for it. It NEVER ends well when you give in to the whiners, because the moment they get what they want, they discover it isn't up to snuff and then start whing even louder.
To Moto and VZW, I say thank you for NOT giving in and continuing to test the upgrade on as many configurations as possible before releasing it. I'd miuch rather wait a little longer and have something which works out of the box (Like Windows 7) than be given software which only functions minimally with a promise of fixes later. (Like Windows Vista.)
To those of you out there in VZW forum land who are persistently complaining about the delay of the Froyo release, I say please chill the heck out. No promise of an actual release date was ever publically set in stone by VZW and late summer was only an open ended estimate. All of the pre-release info on the phone stated things like Flash would not be available until the release of Froyo, so its not as though you've been cheated or lied to.
Just my 2cents worth.

Well written Jay.
Dj.
Drop out of lurk anything you want;
Well said......
I have worked on computers for over 20 years now.... 10 in the retail sector, 5 at a help desk, and over 5 testing software...... meeting deadlines are not impressive when the software sucks
@v5jayjad, I agree with you for the most part, in that similar situations occur in my company's industry, (we are a custom industrial OEM). Maybe my perspective is skewed from working in an industry where the end user is not the general public, but not releasing any formal statement about product status doesn't bode well. Over the past 18 months, one of our competitors lost several accounts to us, through repeated instances of poor communication, and cutting corners.
While I'm (mostly) happy with how my DX is currently working, I think I've become victim to my own expectations. I had higher hopes for the level of support that Moto and VW are offering for this phone, but are now concerned with any future support. I understand that this is business, but I wish the level of the PR, matched the quality of the hardware. Allowing rampant rumors, doesn't help anyone.
It looks to me as if it will.
Verizon has posted the 2.2 update announcement:
