Unlock Samsung S4 after contract expiration

Hi,

I bought a Samsung S4 in February 2014 in the US with a 2 year contract with Verizon. I was moving out of the US in March 2016 and my Verizon contract had ended before then. So I cancelled my Verizon phone number before leaving the US.

Now I want to use a SIM from a different vendor now, but the phone is locked by Verizon. How do I unlock the phone?

Note that I have tried calling Verizon wireless but the menus don't allow me talk to anyone since I no longer have a Verizon number.

The specs indicate it might have been global ready and SIM unlocked that way for overseas travel. It might be capable of being used on the HSPA 3.5G and GSM networks in the USA, but it would be limited since it only lists Band 13 for the LTE frequencies.
