Phone Security

Hello,

I'm new to smartphones and have had my Driod X less than a week. We are currently dealing with viruses and malware on our computer, so it got me thinking. What is the best way to protect my phone and my information?

I currently have Lookout installed and using the premium trial. Should I buy the premium or switch apps?

The premium features include features such as being able to wipe your phone and SD card via the internet if your phone is stolen/lost. The basic feature still provides virus/malware scanning.

After the recent attack from the rogue apps episode, I installed Lookout (the basic free version) and I like what it is doing. And the fact that I've seen no noticable hit on the performance or the battery.

I've been using the Norton Mobile Security (it's still in beta so it's free) It has automatic weekly updates or you can do a manual update whenever you like. It has remote lock and wipe and they recently added the remote locate feature. it also had call and SMS blocking. Since I've been using it, I haven't noticed and slowdowns are battery issues on my Droid X.

It's just personal preference as to whether you use Lookout or NMS. What is important is that you use some kind of Virus/malware protection.

We have Norton on the laptop and it has malwear that we cannot remove. Now spending $125.00 to have it fixed. So far Lookout has been great. I think I'll buy re premium. Thanks so much for your replays.

Lookout appears to be the best anti-virus app right now. They were on the droiddream within hours. I use the free version, but if there was an app that "earned" the few bucks for the upgrade, it's this one.

Another point I read today. The malware-infested apps last week were downloaded from the Android App Market, but security is tightening. The same can't necessarily be said for 3rd party apps from websites online. People should consider that before downloading any app from a website.

Lookout is engineered well and I perfer it over others but in reality you have to keep in mind that all antiviruses can do their job, some do it better than other but when all is said and done you also have to use your device wisely.... If a user has a habit of visiting high risk sites regularly they can not expect any security app to stop everything tjat is released in the wild because at least 50-100 new virus are know to be released every week attempting to find vunibilities in a system especially since viruses for Android i such a new issue.

All I am saying no antivirus is 100% attack proof... Just some food for thought.

On your laptop after you get it fixed put windows security essentials from microsoft its free I have been running it about 2 years and haven't had virus or malware since great app.On my droid x I have avg free verson works great updates every checks everything I download and text messages and email. Back to your laptop .Did you get windows disc with it? If you didn't reboot and hit alt f8 before windows logo comes up there will be a whole list of options to repair your problem.It would be best to just reinstall windows.
