cannot set up hotmail account "setup could not finish, error in login, invalid credentials"

Two weeks ago I started getting messages to log back into one of my hotmail accounts that I had set up on my droid charge at the 'email icon'( I had 3 hotmail accounts and 1 gmail account setup there)

once I logged the password back in it worked again, but it began requesting that I log back into the account more and more frequently

Customer service recommended that I remove the account and then set it up again, I did this and it would not allow me to set it up again-"setup could not finish, error in login, invalid credentials"

I tried removing all acounts and then setting them up again, still could not set up the one hotmail account (same message)

Verizon store decided that I needed to 'wipe' my phone completely, after they wiped it two of my hotmail accounts refused to be set up (same error message)

I tried changing the passwords going to the accounts online on my computer (I can access all the accounts online)

Customer service stated that it must be the phone and sent me a refurbished phone, the refurbished phone is doing the exact same thing with the exact same error message

Any ideas?

When you setup the accounts, are you using the automatic or manual method to set them up?

I am not sure of the settings either, the online users guide does not show it. There has to be a manual or advanced setting when you first set it up. You could try these settings:

Hotmail Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop3.live.com (logon using Secure Password Authentification - SPA, mail server port: 995)
Hotmail Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - smtp.live.com (TLS enabled, port 587)

I use the exchange settings to access my hotmail/live email accounts.

Email address: youremail@hotmail.com

Server address: m.hotmail.com (This is what is should be, but when I look at my setting it was change to snt-m.hotmail.com for that address)

Domain: \

username: youremail@hotmail.com

Password: xxxxxxx

This server requires an encrypted SSL connection is checked yes.

@Matthewclaxton, being able to access your email on your cell phone while on the go is very important so I know how frustrating this must be. But no worries because I’m here to help!

Are you still unable to set up your hotmail email account? Are you having the same issue with other email accounts or is it only with hotmail? Usually with the hard reset you should be able to add the email back to the phone.

Did you try setting up the email manually using the information provided by Ann154? Please post back if you’re still unable to set up your email for further assistance. I’ll be more than happy to further assist you.

Hello John, Nothing works and there are hundreds of us with the same issue, I have been trolling the forums in and out of Verizon and the issues is the same. soft reset- Fail, hard reset- fail, manually (suggested by Ann154) put in- Fail, techs at customer service said it was the phone and replace my phone- fail. If I log on to hotmail on any computer it works fine, if I used the hotmail app to check my mail on the phone it works, using my friends old blackberry it works, the only place it does not work is the preloaded 'Email' app that comes on the Droid Charge, thus it is this app that is malfunctioning, if you do a search for this problem on verizon forum you will see that there are 20+ people with exactly the same issue! outside of Verizon on the droid forums there are hundreds of people with the same issue. Until the app is fixed more and more people will have this issue. I also have two other hotmail accounts on the 'email' app and they are working OK at present although the same issue is starting with one of my other accounts, it begins with the requests for me to sign back in as it states that I am no longer signed in, then is ok when I sign in again, this becomes a more frequent request which eventually leads to not being able to sign into the account.

a common reason this happens, actually, is the system cache is choked up and cant process new information.

while clearing out caches can be a ROYAL pain in the you know what, i use an app called History Eraser to do it all in one button tap.

get that app (its free) and run that once a week. have it clear everything when you do it. one of the things that can choke up the phone REALLY quickly is having either 884566 text messages in your inbox or having 3 threads with 8846 messages per thread. i do this to my moms phone every other week or so and it solves all her email issues every time. i also used to worj tech support for another carrier and this was the #1 most common way to unbork email problems.
