Beware of the DROID software update.

I downloaded it this morning and now have a paperweight.  Verizon tells me that I have to do a hard update.  All my contacts, apps, emails.  Everything gone.

Happy freakin' Easter to me.

Strange, I did my update this afternoon and everything seems fine! Pinch zoom has been added which is pretty sweet... I guess the lesson is for those who haven't done the update yet, back up everything just in case.

you can re-sync your contacts since they are on google/gmail.

your apps are saved through your gmail

if you didnt delete your emails through gmail or your regular email, then they are there.

That happened to me this morning also.  I had nothing including no phone service after the update.  I took my battery out with the phone off, put it back in and turned the phone back on.  My phone returned to normal and the update is completed.  I know nothing about tech stuff, but was very frustrated and thought this might help you.

i have never done the OTA, just manually updated my phone myself.

with the OTA, did it automatically reboot your device cuz i know in the manual update, you have to reboot your Droid for the update to take effect and by the way you make it sound is that you did not reboot your Droid until you did the battery pull?

I did the automatic update this morning while still in bed and half asleep.  The automatic update shut down the phone, then downloaded the data, then rebooted the phone.  Everything happened automatically while I watched.  Just leave the phone alone until it is back up and running.  If you interrupt the process, that's when you have problems.

Hi, yes it did everything automatically as the  poster stated, including rebooting the Droid.  It was very strange because it did do everything the way it was suppose to.  I have no idea what happened to cause this as there was no problem or interruption during the update.  I hope if anyone else has the same issue that the battery pull may help.

I got the update, it left some un useable icons for gallery and my nes and snes emulators. All I did is delete the icons and bring them back up. Now.. about the update.... this thing behaves exactly like 2.1 sure the live wallpaper is something neat , for fun... doesnt have to many.. I already had pinch and zoom because I use dolphin browser... I was expecting more home screens.. why do I just have 3? The weather app is useless as I use weather bug. Is this really the 2.1? or is it just a visual thing? My friend rooted his and he has like 6 home screens , the live wall papers are the ones from the nexus one and his menus look better than this... my menus still look like 2.0... Im not impressed at all. Also its states 2.1 update 1? I guess we are getting more versions to it?

From what I have heard, the Moto Droid take it as it is, only has three desktop. You can install another UI like OPEN++ or like 4 or 5 others and they will give you the option to expand that. The Sense UI defaults to 5 from 1.5 and then 7 for the 2.1. Rooting a phone is like setting up a custom computer. Reasearch should be done before trying anything liek that, but you can purchase another UI for fairly cheap on the market.
