Trying to figure out which phone to buy for the summer. Which phone is better? Thoughts please.
Very difficult to decide for me personally because the fascinate is looking like the the Galaxy S I wanted. Has LED Flash, which is the most imp to me. Now I just need confirmation that Bing is only an option and not default.
Which processor is better ? The 1ghz hummingbird on the fascinate or the Omap 1ghz under the hood of the droid X? Looking at all the videos on the fascinate and the X, The X seemed to be a lot snappier than the Fascinate but i guess when froyo gets installed on it , speed definitely wouldnt be an issue.
X has a better CPU, but Galaxy S phones have better GPU.
The Galaxy S phones have PowerVR SGX 540 GPU which is twice as fast as the PowerVR SGX 530 used in the X. So the Fascinate will be better in gaming and maybe smoother in heavy UI elements.
TBH, the Galaxy S looks smoother to me than the X, but X's soft is not final.

Specs aside...
I see all three companies walking down the sidewalk: Verizon, Samsung, and Motorola.
Samsung is right next to Verizon and Motorola, but they're holding hands, and Samsung isn't.
Meaning.... VZW and MOTO for some reason get along great these days. Loyal to each other you could say.
I see better support on both sides where Samsung not so much. Could I be wrong? Sure, but just think about the future and what companies will stay loyal to carriers.

Im not a big fan of samsung as they have a track record of not standing behind their phones for updates i mean look motorola is still pushing updates out to the droid and the cliq. But its a personal choice I like the X more but thats just me you have to go by what works for you
I'm waiting to see the samsung phone for myself, but I'm saving my NE2 for something spiffy.
I look at a few videos of the Fascinate and I notice a lag here and there, but of course we really have no way of knowing what all was running in background and other things could have been impacting the test devices but I am for the Droid X from what I have noticed but without a personal hands on it is impossible to say, companies work up specs at times just to make a sale (Guess we need to wait and see), its kind of like a PC, if you put a quality high performance processor in a unit but go with a slow hard drive, video card and memory the system is bound to be impacted.. (Both processors have their positives and negatives but I think the performance will come from so many addition situations not just the processor)
Also has anyone considered that the Fascinate uses the same type of screen that the Incredible has and the company hasn't been able to keep up the supply and demand situation on manufacturing the screens and has reported that the shortage for screens may continue for a while, how much chance that we may be looking into another HTC Incredible fiasco on getting the devices.
Ok so your asking about processors. That goes edges to Samsung. Both phones use the same core an ARM 11 Cortex A8 processing core running at 1Ghz. The hummingbird processor uses a specially designed chip based on a technology Apple bought a few years ago that improved functionality of processing cores and allowed them to do technically more than they were really capable of. In otherwords these are equal processors with the hummingbird having an advanced architecture chip design. Samsung built the chips for the iPad and iPhone so they licensed the tech somehow in all that. The Droid X uses a faster running version of the DROID processor. It is good at the very least equivalent to a Snapdragon which also uses the same core. The hummingbird allows for more memory and an L2 cache so there is some better architecture to the hummingbird. There won't be any significant processing advantages from here until we start seeing A9 cores come out. They will allow for multicore processing and speeds of up to 2Ghz, also when we start seeing Atom Processors in Android phones. Both are expected by the end of this year to the middle of next year so you may see some by Christmas but most likely next Spring season will carry us beyond the 1Ghz range.
As to the phones I have read a little but not a lot. I know the Samsung has been watched for a long time and several people are excited about its release. I was hoping it was coming last year but now I am happy with what I have. Based on my experience with phones I expect it to be a great Phone if not a great Android device. I am however, growing to hate custom User Interfaces so in this case Droid X wins. It ditched the custom UI but kept some of the goodies. In theory it won't take as long to update it. HTC and Samsung have custom UI's and we Know HTC is being held up as far as that goes on updates and I can only imagine Samsung will run into the same thing. Also from first reports it sounds like the Samsung UI is just about as beloved as Motorola's Blur was meaning most people agree that it would be a great device if they would get rid of it. I haven't seen the "new and improved" Samsung UI but generally speaking it is a negative to me. A poorly reviewed UI is sad because they typically aren't significant, mostly fluff with some core additions the Samsung one has gotten far more jeers than cheers. I have to think from that that waiting until they get all the updates completed and ported and approved would be frustrating at best. Just a thought. I would think that after the next update they can slow down on that anyway because most of the really important stuff will come with 2.2 and after that I can't think of any just like gotta have it updates that would be necessary. Just staying ahead of the competition type stuff. So that may be less of a deal after 2.2 comes to all the phones. Me I am a little obsessive so if I can find a phone without a custom UI I will be going with it the first opportunity I hav.e
Samsung makes the Super AMOLED screens themselves and so there is no concern of shortage ala the Incredible and other AMOLED devices that depend on a third party. The overall picture quality on the Galaxy S annihilates the Droid X . Look at them side by side. There's no comparison. The GPU on the the Galaxy S also makes loading pictures, games, and videos quicker than on the X.
I would not say that the overall picture quality on the Galaxy S "annihilates" or even beats that of the Droid X. The Galaxy S phones have a much higher contrast ratio, thus much blacker blacks. However, the Droid X provides more accurate color rendition, apparently about the best available among the current 'high end' smartphones, and greater brightness. This is based on both subjective viewing and published objective measurements. and while GPU on the Galaxy S phones does out perform that of the Droid 2 or Droid X, the way the Galaxy accesses memory makes it much slower in other performance benchmarks. In both cases it seems that any comparison between the Fascinate and Droid X would be dependent upon your expectations and how you will use the device.
Samsung does make the Super AMOLED display used in the Fascinate but the Galaxy S phones have been released in a fairly short time on major service providers in something like 110 countries, so I'm not sure that it can be stated that availability will not be a problem. Just because they make the displays does not mean they will have sufficient inventory, it just means that they have more direct control of availability.
