Eris firmware update

I know this is beating a subject to death but when is there ANY update for the 1.5 firmware coming out? As a medical professional I used epocrates on my windows mobile based phone. When the android phones first came out I eagerly; quite possibly prematurely; jumped on the HTC Eris which came stock with firmware 1.5. I Love the phone however epocrates was not available. OK, I will wait. Well now they have come out with an Android native app that requires 1.6 or higher. So I am back to carrying multiple pocket flip guides instead of just being able to use my smart phone. When is Verizon or HTC going to get it together and update the firm wear or do I need to just buy another phone???

Please verizon if you read these blogs and care about your customers get the firmware out ASAP. There are many people who want it just because it is the "latest and greatest", but there are just as many of us that NEED it because apps we need are not written for the older firmware.

To answer this as honestly: No. And we won't know unless they say something about it.

isnt it strange that all this time it was non stop talk/rumors about the droid update, but not once has anyone talked about an HTC update, not even a rumor.

It's probably because us Eris rumor people installed the leaked version and we're all content. :smileywink:

However, I am noticing I need to use task killers more with the Eris 2.1... :smileyindifferent:

I use my TasKiller every single time before I lock my Eris.

I can't imagine having to use it more. I don't think I can.

Sometimes apps are open that I didn't even touch or open.

Oh well, still like the phone.

I have heard no official update on the date.  The last thing I have heard from the internet is once the Droid update was done we should start seeing the Eris update be sent out.  From what I understand the Droid update finished yesterday.  So, hopefully no later than next Friday we could see an update.  That is all speculation on my part though.

I signed up for the community boards just to say I agree... It is amazing that it is taking so long for a firmware update.  And with every new android phone that comes out I wonder if there will actually be an update.  I'm a little disappointed -- mostly because there has been NO confirming, denying, or speaking out officially.  Of course, the longer it takes, it makes me even more worried that once the update is "here" it will actually be more buggy or something.  I love the phone, but it is just a bit annoying to not have Verizon say anything one way or another.

this is a topic that's discussed alot so i felt i should relay this email message i recvd from VZW this past Tue, 13Apr. i had asked VZW if the update was going to be put on the Eris and this is the email response i got:

We'd like to assure you that we are committed to providing the very latest in products and services. For that reason, we rigorously test our products prior to launching them in an effort ensure they meet our standards of excellence. Doing so allows us to confidently address information regarding products or services that we currently offer. Disclosing any unconfirmed information that may be subject to change could raise expectations that may not be met.

At this time, we are unable to state when the HTC Droid Eris software update will become available as no information has been given thus far. We understand and sincerely apologize for any frustration and would like to encourage you to sign up for email updates so you can receive information regarding our new products and services.

i also recvd a phone call from VZW hdq, she told me the higher ups need to hear from as many customers as possible about the questions and concerns about the Eris update.  i told her to check out the forum but she said they need to be contacted.

Well, I spoke to both Verizon and HTC and neither has any productinve information. I see the new HTC incredible is coming out the end of this month and has many features I want including the higher firmware. I will probably just go by one and be done with the problem. While I hate that option as all I am doing is giving more money to Verizon and HTC (in purchasing yet another new phone) it does solve my delema. It is a sore subject to give them yet more money just because they have failed to support our current device (the Eris) with an update. Maybe this is another example of coporate greed? Maybe they know if they release a new device and hold off on a software update that the $$$$ will flow in via phone purchases? Wouldn't surprise me. Let's be honest it IS about the all mighty $ and not about customer support, otherwise we would already have the update. If the Incedible can launch with Sense UI and firmware 2.1 in days, the firmware is obviously already operational with Sense UI, so all of the comments about needing to get the firmware intergrated with the sense UI have been resolved some time ago. They just don't want us to upgrade old devices, moreover purchase new ones.

I have to agree with the business perspective, but not on the fact that 2.1 with Sense UI validation delay excuses.

The Eris can't handle alot of the 2.1 features (like application wide Speech to Text and Live Wallpapers). HTC had to disable these features. They also had to better streamline the performace so it runs well with the Eris' lower hardware specs.

We all can speculate why Verizon/HTC is delaying the patch and one may be because of the Incredible... maybe because of "greed" maybe because of marketing priority... maybe because its still buggy as heck.... who knows.

If you want the 2.1, download it from here...

http://android.grdlock.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=2dc5f52a528fab1b1c6d5964a9914827&direction=0&order=&d...

  1. rename it to PB00IMG.zip
  2. copy it to your sd card
  3. shutdown the phone
  4. press down-volume and power
  5. press trackball to <action> start the upgrade

Your done.

Do you need to download the root as well? What does or doesn't rooting the phone do for the upgrade?

Also if I upgrade using your link will an OTA official update from Verizon (if we ever get one) still work?

It's an official leaked version and you would get an OTA upgrade as long as the OTA was newer then this leaked version.

Download the "official.zip" version, not the "root"... then follow my instructions. If your still concerned, then read through the posts over on Android Forums.

Also, for those who upgraded when the leak was first released... this leaked version is actually a bit newer then the original version. AndroidForums calls it "leak v2" of sorts.

I just bought new Eris's for my wife and daughter yesterday to upgrade them from their older phones. I have a Droid and have had it since the launch day and I follow these forums closely. I just wanted to ask in this thread - Does the 2.1 leaked upgrade for the Eris really improve the UI, or is it a marginal improvement. I've seen some info about it, but from a practical, hands-on point of view, what do you think about it?

I don't know why you say the Eris hardware can not handle speech to text. I successfully ran that on a 486 processor running at 166mhz under windows 98. The Eris core is vastly superior to that old clunker running on a system (98) that further degrades performance by at least 3 times over a Linux system. The Eris has more then enough computing power for speech to text and about 5 more programs running at the same time.

I just called them to see if there was going to be anything available to us Eris users to upgrade to the Incredible since it was obvious that they have not intention of upgrading the Eris. They looked at my account and said I was up for my typical upgrade, so please $299 with $100 rebate, and yes, you can have the incredible instead of the Eris.

She also let me know that they are not saying anything about the Eris upgrade because they do not like to spread rumors or false information. She said it could be some time because of the Incredible release, which if that is the reason, I will just let my contract expire and take my business elsewhere. I have also emailed them, and received the same canned response an earlier responder received. Of course they try to divert my attention by sending me other useful links that could help my experience.

I have been a very loyal follower of Verizon both home service as well as wireless service. Recently, I moved to a new location, and I had a pretty bad experience with the Verizon home service customer support. Now, I am receiving the same kind of customer service from Verizon wireless. Home is now with AT&T U-verse, and I fear soon, my wireless might be with AT&T Wireless.  Thanks for listening to the common man Verizon. Thanks for the support.
