Phone App Help

The Droid is a great Internet Appliance, but in the midst of all that, I think the people at Motorola or Google forgot that this is still a telephone. Which brings me to my question:

How do I keep the screen from turning off when I am making a phone call to a number that requires me to use the dial pad?

I mean, sure it can turn off when the device is idle, but if I'm on the phone, and need to use the phone to dial numbers, it would be nice for the screen to stay on for that purpose. So does anyone know how I can make the screen stay on for this purpose?

There are sensors that recognized when the phone is covered, assumptively with your cheek when making a call. To get it out of sleep mode, if you need to use the dialpad, just move it away from your face and it'll get off sleep. If it doesn't, then press the menu button to awake it. If not then it's probably defective and needs to be taken back.

I think I understand what happened. My thumb was covering the light sensor. However, just to be sure, in case I have my phone in speakerphone mode, the screen won't turn off unless my hand is covering the sensor?
