Okay, I'm sick of waiting and really don't think it's ever going to happen, sooooo.....couple questions...
1) What is the newest version of the leak and where can I find it?
2) When the phone is rooted, will you lose your contacts and any apps that may have been downloaded?

Does anyone have a quick answer to the second question so I don't have to sift through the forum?

At the top of my head there really isn't any reason why you should have to root your phone with the leaked APK. That's why I recommend people using it. I coiuld be wrong though.

May I suggest you take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=551 for all your Eris modifications, particularly the Android Development forum. However, may I also suggest that you search the forums extensively before posting a new thread as to keep the forums uncluttered with repeat questions. If you can't find it by searching in those forums, then it probably hasn't been discussed.

Yep, you can use the leak without needing to root the phone.

I figured as much. Then it's more than likely the official release. But they are probably giving it the same treatment the same way they did for the HTC Touch Pro 2 update.

To answer your questions
1) Their are 3 droid eris 2.1 leaks
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649705
"Original HTC Developer 2.1 Root Rom
Only known way to root the Eris
Rom: http://www.sendspace.com/file/g4n2q4
HTC 2.1 Leak Rom
Verizon test rom, REJECTED. Do not Install if you want root.
Rom: http://www.sendspace.com/file/frqze0
HTC 2.1 Release Candidate (AKA OTA) Leak Rom
Verizon test rom, possible OTA leak. Do not Install if you want root.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RHNAWUR0"
The newest version of the leak is HTC 2.1 Release Candidate, this is not recommended because from this their is no current known way to root, and it is not known if people on this leak will be able to update to the official Verizon 2.1 OTA (while people on the rooted rom can downgrade to Android 1.5 and receive the OTA)
2) I am not sure if this applies to the rooted version, but when you update to the leaks you lose contacts, apps, and everything BUT your SD card contents (ex. photos, movies, music)
Finally Verizon confirmed the 2.1 update for 2010 Q1, it is obviously past this date, but the leak #2 (AKA HTC 2.1 Release Candidate) was 103.78 MB, which sent out to thousands of thousands of phones could really be hard for Verizon to do.

What exactly is the 'built in back up'? If your referring to the Data synchronization in the settings, I don't think it backs up your apps. I have had to sync, then master reset and after syncing back to my phone from my gmail, I was left with no apps. If there is a different way then please explain!
Thanks!

DO NOT INSTALL 2.1 LEAK!
I Installed it on my Eris. I actually thought it was Legit after reading about it here. I installed it, and it's buggy. Causes Crashes of Apps. It also does not allow my Apps to access any internet Within the APP. For instance, my NHL Versus App. If I click on a link of a Story, it comes up with a "Cannot Load Page" It happens with a number of Apps, and I have tried every type of repairing I can. Until I found out it was not a Legititmate or Finished Software Update. I read others are having the same problem.
NOW, I cannot go back because it doesn't or cannot access the ROOT. So Now I am stuck with it and nobody has a fix. Even though there has been a release that has ROOT access now.
Big Mistake, dont make it.

We are o verizon Forum, so when I say thought it was Legit, that;s my story and I am sticking to it. especially if the only way out of the LEAK rom is to exchange it. The [rospect of getting out of this LEAK seems slim, so Exchanging it may be the only option. So thats my story. And Like I said, Im sticking to it.![]()

Of course its going to be buggy.
by the way if you're still on the first leak upgrade to the second-there are a lot less bugs.

We have two Eris's in my house - 1 for my daughter and 1 for my wife. I did the 2.1v2 upgrade on the daughter's phone and it's purring like a kitten. She's used to this sort of thing because I have a habit of not being able to leave anything alone so she knows to regularly report to me her experiences with the phone or I'll chase her down and make her tell me.
She's told me nothing but good things so far. She absolutely loves it over the original 1.5 or whatever it was, My wife on the other hand is not tech-savvy enough to even care. She can do the few things on it that she wants to do and the new things available through the upgrade are completely meaningless to her. She has made it clear to me that if I mess with her phone, she will be feeding it to me. So I steer clear...
At any rate, I just wanted to report another case of someone who's perfectly happy with the upgrade. I'm not sure what happens with people's phones who end up having trouble, but no problems here at all.
*edit* And I'd just like to clarify AGAIN - There is no need to "root" your phone to use the leaked update. I just see a lot of posts calling it the rooted upgrade or whatever and that confuses the situation. The upgrade is applied to any (Eris) phone from whatever state it's in at the time, rooted or otherwise.

Ditto... I only had one app that did as you say and I got the same error. I always thought it was the app, but I guess not.
