Why can't Skype  be used over wifi as opposed to 3g?

Because Skype mobile doesn't have an agreement with Wi-Fi providers, they have one with Verizon Wireless.   Perhaps a Verizon employee could shed more light on the situation, but I believe it is tied into the licensing agreement between Verizon and Skype.

Eh, I think it may be because it uses your minutes to make phone calls... from the Droid X Getting Started packet: Use Skype Mobile on your phone: From your Application Tray, touch Skype Mobile to launch. Calling minutes will be used.[italics emphasis added].  Is this serious?

Thanks for the replies.  But, skype to skype uses no mobile minutes as I understand it.  Of course, I've been known to be wrong before,  vbg

This is one that iPhone won in my book.  Verizon made an exclusive deal with Skype.  A very well negotiated Skype will be available on all Verizon handsets but it will be useless deal.  It can not make calls over wifi which is a big negative against it and one I frankly don't understand.  It can not make calls through Skype in or Skype Out accounts which in my book is what Skype is for.  On the iPhone ironically all of the Skype in and Skype out functions work but it has to be used over Wifi and cannot be used over 3G.  I find that odd but a little funny.  Anyway, if there was a way to get Skype app for iPhone installed on an Android phone I would love it.  Skype for verizon phones is essentially Google talk and that being the case why go from one free service to another that is essentially the same except Google Talk can use 3G or Wifi.  I guess the argument could be made that there are people that use Skype to voice chat that don't use Google talk so you can chat with them.  Fine.  I don't know any of them.  I have one Skype buddy in Russia and it appears they logged in last about the same time I logged in last about 3 years ago.

I recently renewed my contract and added the data package ($30/month).  The ONLY reason a did that was because I wanted to use skype when I travel overseas.  The sales rep assured me three times that skype mobil will work on a wifi connection.  Well, it turns out  that this guy didn't know what he was talking about.  As I now know, skype doesn't work on wifi which is totally ridiculous.  I understand that verizon is trying to make money out of this deal, but I think they're forgetting that customers are paying for a data package so they should open the pipe and allow users to connect via wifi.  I have no problems using skype on my wife's iPhone/iPod via wifi.

There are forums all over the net about this and I hope verizon is paying attention to customers'  frustrations over this and change this policy.  In the mean time, I'm planning to cancel this data package and move to another carrier.

Not only that but your wife's iphone can make calls over Skype where our phones can't.  not to call numbers only other skype users.

I have Skype & Skype Mobile installed.  Skype Mobile for when I am on the Verizon network and Skype for when I want to use WiFi.  It is possible to install both on the android phones.

I can't find anywhere on these forums to post a new question (unbelievably bad user experience, even worse than the process of registering for the community forums), so hopefully I can get some help here.

I just upgraded from a BB Tour to HTC Incredible. On the Tour, I was happily making international Skype calls from the US. Now when I try to make a call it tells me Skype calls in the US can only be made over WiFi. WTH?

Skype Mobile: vzw exclusive Skype app, only works on VzW network.

Skype For Android: works on every carrier's android phones, wifi-only.

Download both to Skype everywhere.

Don't know what happened to my question the first time I posted it but here it is again.

I'm confused also, I'm going out of the country for a few months and my droid is not supported there and need a global phone. It is 4.99 a min to make calls from there to home and so what I was wondering is, if I get a global phone and get the 69.99 data plan can I make Skype calls with just the data plan or do I need to still find a wifi hot spot?

Just tried it out on the 3g network and it works great. But I still would like to know how it works when using a global phone before I get one.

Since this is new and very recent update I am unsure if anyone can answer your question yet...  The update just hit..

I can answer his question but it's not the answer he wants: the global plan you're referencing doesn't exist anymore. Global data is now at astronomically high rates for pitifully small allowances, far too small to be able to Skype without paying SUPER CRAZY rates. http://b2b.vzw.com/international/GlobalData/rates_coverage.html

I was on the phone a few weeks ago with Verizon, and talking to them about the data package, and was told that having a business account that it would go form 29.99 to 69.99 for unlimited data like I have here. So I guess what I'm wondering is if the speed is going to be fast enough to use skype calls. I'm going to Buenos Aries Argentina, where they don't have CDMA only GSM.

Ah yeah if you're on a business account you probably still have access to the globalemail plan. *IF* 3g roaming is available in your destination it should work fine. If it's only 2g (edge) roaming, it won't work at all.
