Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update for the DROID by Motorola.

Users will be able to upgrade their software to version AP: ESE81/BP: C_01.3E.03P to receive new improvements and enhancements. Approximately 200,000 users will receive the update notification each day. This schedule will continue each day for about a week, until the update has been delivered to all users.

Key Advantages:

Email - Free Yahoo Mail is now supported - customers can simply sign in with their Yahoo! Email address and password. Note: Yahoo! Email is not available over Wi-Fi
Speech-to-Text - Customers can now use their voice instead of typing whenever a text-entry box appears
Google Goggles is now preloaded
The new Gallery application uses 3D layout and shows both pictures taken with the customer's Android device and images from Picasa Web Albums account online
Pinch to Zoom now available in the Browser, Maps, and Gallery

Download & Install Conditions:

An OTA download requires 40% or more power availability if the device is not connected to an external power source or 20% or more power if it is connected to an external source
If roaming, the customer will not receive the update. The only option in this scenario is for the subscriber to enable Wi-Fi and wait for a mandatory OTA. The wait period in this case will not be more than 12 hours
User must wait to receive the upgrade via OTA
User is unable to make or receive calls, including emergency calls during this time
Users will see the following information when they select

Or at the very least, some kind of status report on the Eris update. A small amount of enlightenment can yield a large amount of customer confidence...if you guys are into that kinda thang.

My thoughts exactly. April fools to us Eris owners. Will this update support hands free blue tooth? Some how from what I've read elsewhere that it won't and I will be very disappointed and will be trading this phone in on another one or discontinue service with Verizon and switch to another carrier.

I got my phone in January and as soon I got my car after getting it I was told to update to 2.0.1 so I would think that all the droid phones would get 2.1 at the same time. Why Vz is doing it at 200,000 users at a time doesn't makes sense.

This is a question for the early adopters I believe that 2.0,1 came out in December, so did Vz do the update the same way? So many at a time or was it released on all the phones at the same time?

Yes the 2.0.1 update was rolled out the same in groups of 250,000 a day until all recieved. I have manually updated my moto droid to 2.1 and it still does not do bluetooth dialing. Also, my free yahoo account i can get setup, but it doesnt get my new emails automatically like my gmail acct. But i have my gmail account getting my yahoo email automatically anyway, so that works for me. Also, I dont think anybody should be on the cell phone while driving anyway, be it "hands-free" or not. Still distracting, so I could care less about bluetooth dialing. Im perfectly happy with the way my Moto droid is. :smileyhappy:

I hope I am on the list for tomorrow because I really don't understand why every Droid owner could not get it as soon as it was available. Still have a few days on my 30 left, if I don't get my upgrade maybe one of the newer phones will be available.

you might have to wait up to three weeks. they only send out a certain number of OTA's. then those people have to install it. and once that is done they send out more.

or you could do it the other way.

Got my update this morning! Everything went well. Only real difference I see is pinch to zoom and speak to type. Cool!

The good news.... It's true. My wife received the OTA update to 2.1 this morning. Interesting that she just got her Droid on February 8th after seeing how much I was enjoying mine.

Me, I got my Droid after waiting in line on opening morning, Friday November 6th. Love the phone and have been eagerly awaiting the release of 2.1. Despite the fact that that I leaped in at the beginning, looks like Verizon's staggered release is based upon something different than first in, first out. From a marketing prospective, If I had to release an update in stages as they seem to be doing, I think I would serve the first buyers first. However, if marketing to your loyal base isn't a concern, then "pick a number, any number". On the other hand, what's another week of waiting when my initial expectations for this release were set back in December about the time the Nexus One was rolled out?

the update will take a few weeks, now two. they have to have all those who received the OTA to update first so as not to bog down the network.

dont worry, it's worth the wait and there really is nothing on update that would greatly change your life.

I have been wondering where the update is for this phone too. So i called verizon tech support and they suggested since i hadnt recieved it to go to the local store and have them download the update to my phone. Wow, good idea i thought. During my question answer session with tech support, they were setting me up for an updated 2.1 replacement phone. And I decided to ask since they were doing this "Are there growing problems with this phone?" he said "The list is getting bigger all the time". Sure! There are some outstanding things this phone does! But over all i have found that the basic funtions of this phone to be clunky at best. Yet Blazing Speed on the web, and wifi, spectacular GPS, and voice search can pasify me to the point of thinking OK this phone is a keeper. All in all when i add up all the minuses from the plus's for using the droid,,,,,, no comment yet. I will wait a little more to see what happends with the update when replacement gets here in 2 days.

first of all you should consider the source before you accept the judgments of other people.

did this guy/girl have a droid themselves? have they had experience with it (and that does not count the fact that they sell it so that should be enough experience)? these are the same representatives that have told people that an update was coming out really soon, like in jan. and feb., are we really taking their word?

i use this phone 24/7 for everything, they describe the features from what they learned through a class and complaints from those returning the phone. did you get that? complaints from those people returning the phone. not from the people who are happy with this device, because honestly, i am not going out of my way back to the Best Buy where i purchased this wonderful device and talk it up. i am thrilled with the phone, best buy did their job by providing me with great service, so as far as i am concerned i am done talking to them unless i go a buy a new phone in a few more years.

over 1 million units sold and probably a handful of those are returned (more than likely it was because of the no bluetooth dialing)

I'd like to know what problems are making the list bigger all the time? Did he elaborate or did he stop there? If he stopped there then it was a stock answer to end the conversation if you fail to ask what was wrong with it.

i work with a guy who use to work for the Best Buy mobile phone department, and like other places as well he told me that they are given goals for every month. One month they need to push a certain phone and the top seller gets a free cellophane of their choosing.

So when asking a sales person, careful, there may be ulterior motives afoot

Got my OTA update this Easter morning. I like the voice to text function but why no Flash support yet? I thought that was the #1 request from users!

it was a number one request from users but in no way was it ever promised to come with the update. all that you might have heard were only rumors.

adobe, as you know, has nothing to do with google and motorola. they are a separate entity. it was just said that a 2.1 OS system will allow flash to run on the android platform better.

flash is now scheduled to come out in Q2, so we have until summer time for that to happen.

I got the update message and installed it yesterday morning. My phone has not worked since. We called verizone and the guy had no clue there was even an update. My phone just shows the droid eye followed the word Droid. It won't boot and I can;t turn it off unless I remove the battery.

Try sending out 200,000 e-mails at once from your computer and see what happens. What they are doing is much more complicated than that. There are limits you know. Be patient...

Why not both at the same time! What is the logic in this 200,000 per day roll out?

It appears that who gets it when is random. The reason it's 200,000 per day is so the network does not get overwhelmed.

My phone was updated this weekend. since then, i have experienced "force close"s (8x today for example) on numerous apps - apps i've downloaded from the market, (ie, ebuddy, running buddy, gps status) and apps that come as part of the phone (ie, google maps / navigation, messaging). My phone is dropping calls and losing 3G status while stationery. I've had my phone since the beginning of december and this is all new since the update. I'm really not to impressed with the update because of this. any ideas on how to fix?

I recieved my update about a week ago. And since then my phone has worked fine except for my pictures.

Every time I take a picture with my camera, or save a picture from a message or a background they dont show up in my gallery. I have to restart my phone to see my new pictures, every time.

I was wondering if there is any way I can fix this problem, or if anyone else is having this promlem. Its rather annoying. When i take a picture i expect to be able to show people or look at it myself, but i cant until i restart my phone.

Any help would be appreciated, as ive look for answers else where but havent been able to find anything.

My wife recieved the update last week. Everyone I know has already recieved it. I received an email talking about the update I received. I have not gotten the update yet. STILL WAITIING.

I got my Android 2.1 a little over a week ago. Took about 15 minutes to load it. I'm a bit disappointed with what we actually ended up with in this update. The pinch to zoom is ok, but after doing the pinch thing, the screen doesn't automatically resize the content to fit the screen. I have to still hit the + button for that. Otherwise I have to scroll right and left to see the content. Instead, I just double tap the screen with my finger and get a one-time zoom that also sizes the content to the screen.

The other thing that is kind of nice is the live wallpapers. However, some of the downloads from the Market have caused my Droid to run a bit sluggish at times. I no longer use those walls.

The two (2) items that I was so looking forward to in the 2.1 upgrade was to have 2 additional "home" screens, making a total of 5 rather than the standard 3. Where did that feature go? And the last and most important update that I was looking for was the FLASH 10 feature. The only ability that Droid now has to run videos is if they are on YOUTUBE. Otherwise you are dead in the water!!!

I know that there are tons of rumors floating around on the Internet of things that we "should" be seeing in these updates vs. things that we "will" see. Prior to the 2.1 update coming out, I would call my local full-blown retail store here in Gainesville, Fl. and ask them when it is planned to release, or what features will be included. They have either been sworn to secrecy to not share that information with their customers, or are totally kept in the dark by VZW of things to come. Either way, it is POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE on Verizon's part to not keep their users better informed.

I have been with Verizon before they were Verizon; Airtouch. I've told my CSR that I don't intend to take my cell phone needs to a different carrier because I appreciate the reliable service that I currently enjoy with VZW. BUT, if Verizon continues to be stingy with their update information, I might start looking around again. Please don't make me do that!!!

In conclusion. WHEN WILL WE SEE THE ADDITIONAL HOME SCREENS and WHEN WILL WE SEE FLASH 10 ??????????

Gator, I've had my Droid for 4-5 months, and I haven't used the stock-home at all. Try one of the many really good home replacement apps that will allow you to have 4-7 screens. Personally, I really like Home++, but there's also OpenHome, iHome, PandaHome, and others. These types of apps are why I love Android over the iPhone --- the ability to say "I want that!" and to be able to customize your phone accordingly.

Have you tried Menu->Settings->About phone->System updates. Some people have reported that they did not receive a notification but when they checked for updates, it showed the update was available. If that does not work take a look at Droid 2.1 Update Rollout Ends Tomorrow?

I am looking to upgrade soon and I have heard of the problems regarding the unavailability to voice dial on the droid and other android phones. Is this problem fixed with the latest update and with the droid incredible coming out does it have the availability to voice dial??

I keep getting certificate errors for my company's certificates. I didn't get them on the Droid native client.

I just hit 'Continue' and it goes on to sync but it's pretty annoying when the alerts queue up. It usually starts about 8 hours after provisioning and seems to happen at about that time consistently or it could be that it only happens at night because that's the only time I don't have it out and playing with it.

I have tried a number of methods to get the certificate accepted but without luck.

Anyone else have an issue?

When can we anticipate a Android OS that will allow the installation of programs to the SD card? I think that it's a bit disappointing individual developers have made ROMs which allow this and our provider/google has yet to release it.

My primary motivation for asking is the fact that with all the programs being installed to the RAM on the device it can get quite sluggish for during the (heavily advertised) multi-tasking which I find almost deceiving to say such as the phone gets so jerky it can be hard to do anything with it if I run 3+ programs at a time.

I recieved the update, and it's the worst thing ever. It completely erased all my contacts, settings, preferences, and several applications I'd downloaded. It was like my phone had been reverted back to when I first purchased it. Also, everything is running slower, and my voicemail occasionally doesn't work. Seriously Verizon? There's got to be a way to fix these things.

I just recently did the new software update about two days ago and since the update I am having the worst time answering a phone call. When I go to accept the call it doesn't allow me to answer and then gives me a notification of a miss call. On top of the my phone has a delay when I am trying to place a call. I will select a contact and not only does it take long to place the call it selects the wrong contact and doesn't want to hang up?

Could this be because of some of the apps that I have installed on my device. This is the second phone I have had and it hasn't even been 7 months yet.

What is there for me to do so my phone could work properly? :smileymad:

I thought I was the only one, and that I MUST have installed it incorrectly, but I'm having the same issues... this is REALLY a problem as I had tons of contacts and they're ALL gone... many were from my old phone that I moved to my droid, and now I have no way to recover them, unless someone out there has a brilliant idea on how to do that..

I was prompted twice over the past week to upgrade, so I thought I'd go ahead and do so, and while I did glance at the "impact" to my current settings, I sure didn't notice that it would revert my phone all the way back to the settings it had when I got the phone in November, however it appears that most of my apps that I downloaded are still there so the killer for me is my contact list...

Verizon REALLY should let folks know that they should expect to lose their contacts as I would not have downloaded the so called "upgrade" had I known this would be the outcome... ugh!

If there are any Verizon or HTC software engineers tracking this thread...you guys did an ABSOLUTELY horrible job of performance verification testing this "upgrade." My wife's Eris is basically toast - lost all apps, can't recover contacts, etc....is this your idea of well executed software engineering...guess you guys are about CMMI level 0!!!!

This is from a rather p-d off weapons system software engineer who is appalled by your lack of competence!!!!!!!!!

I have had numerous issues also since the update. I cannot set my speed dial even though I got through all the steps and I do not receive an error, the speed dials aren't there. I was able to fix the weather bug issue, but I am still having issues with the phone lagging and my signal being horrible. I also seem to have an echo on a lot of my phone calls. Another strange thing is my alarms are not going off. They are set correctly and yet they never go off. I just got this phone last month and I am seriously considering returning it if this is what will happen whenever Verizon does updates.

I was wondering when this thread might go back to the topic it was created for: "the DROID by Motorola." Personally I have been long anticipating the arrival of the 2.2 OS of Android which was announced and released for select phones today at the Google I/O in San Francisco.

Is there any ETA that we can get on the arrival of this OS to our handsets so that we can use the functionality that was so wonderfully advertised, like Flash and the ability to multi-task without the phone dragging?

Looking forward to a response from a VZW rep.

I just got my Eris on 5/19/10, did the upgrade shortly after taking the phone home and since I didn't really know what the phone did prior to the update, I don't know about all the issues that you folks are talking about. I do however have a huge complaint regarding the audio since the update. Nearly every call I get, I will either fade out, the caller can't hear me at all or it's very choppy. I can hear them clear as a bell. This is hugely annoying since the primary function of the phone is to make and receive calls. I love that I can still text and what not but bought a phone I can't really use. Hope they give me a replacement tomorrow when I go into the store. Frustrated! : :smileymad:

You can get your contacts back by syncing phone with your g mail account. This will put the names back on your contacts. I agree, this is a terrible "upgrade". I have the same problems trying to make calls as other users have complained about. I have to turn my phone completely off and back on again several times daily as I cannot hear callers when I dial out or receive calls. Very frustrating!!! I am still having problem downloading text messages with attachments. I called Verizon support several weeks ago and was told a representative would call me back within a week... still waiting.

If you are referring to the Motorola Droid which I assume you are, then yes I have had no problems out of it. Unfortunately a lot of people have been using this thread somewhat 'off-topic' about the Droid Eris when there is a thread already created for that.

The embarrassment is that this "NEW" software is almost ancient (Android 2.1). Everybody I know (at least with other Google phones or cell carriers) has ANDROID 2.2 now which includes lots of goodies not the least of which is the long promised Flash 10.1. Too bad Verizon is so slow with upgrades, no matter what you pay, it wil literally be out of date by the time you get it (at least it was with the prior releases)
