Hello I recently upgraded to an iphone 16. I live in a rural area with very limited service and I use wi-fi for calling. Lately I have been talking on the phone using wi-fi and the call suddenly disconnects and SOS appears in the upper right corner of the screen. The only way to get out of SOS mode is to reboot the phone. Very frustrating when trying to conduct business. Apple says it is a Verizon issue, Verizon tells me to call Apple. Someone suggested to disable wi-fi assist in settings/cellular and I have done that but have not fully tested it. Just wondering of anybody else who lives in rural area has experienced this and have found a solution. Thanks.

Have you tried putting your phone in airplane mode first, then turning on WiFi so it can only use WiFi? I'm wondering if your phone is reverting to cellular service for some reason, which would cause your calls to drop if cellular service isn't very good. Another cause for WiFi calling to not work well is an IPv6 conflict, because the last I'd heard, Verizon is still using the older IPv4 for WiFi Calling.
If you don't have a Verizon network extender in your home, you could look into obtaining one. Other alternatives are to invest in a 3rd party signal booster system compatible with Verizon, or to test drive the competition if your phone is unlocked to see if anyone else works better. All the large carriers offer a free trial of their network so long as you're not an existing customer and haven't had any services with them for at least 90 days.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.
