I have Verizon international travel plan but don't want to activate it. If I read or send a text mesage using the Apple message app while overseas, does that activate the plan for that day?

With TravelPass, the daily fee is triggered by making or answering a call, sending a text, or using cellular data. Additional details can be found here: https://vz.to/36hGvPH. When traveling in another country, you will receive a welcome text that will let you know what you will be billed when using service in that destination. If you are covered by an international plan, that message will confirm your coverage, otherwise you will see the pay per use rates. The International Trip Planner: https://bit.ly/3RnFyuj can also be used to review rates and plan options for international travel.
With regard to WiFi, that is free to use and customers are not charged for connecting to and using data over WiFi. At times the entity providing the WiFi service may ask for payment to use WIFi services, however, that payment is upfront and would go to that company as opposed to Verizon. An example would be using WiFi on an airplane. In a situation where there are additional data charges on a bill while traveling, indicates that the phone has disconnected from WIFi and connected to the cellular network and then used data. The only other thing to keep in mind as far as WiFi would be regarding WiFi Calling as outlined with the TravelPass info. WiFi Calling will cover calls back to the US. However, calls to any other country will be billed at international long distance rates. Should coverage be needed for long distance, a plan can be added. Please let us know if this helps answer your question.

I'm not sure about just reading texts, but if you send a text while abroad and don't use Travel Pass or the International Service Plan, then you get billed the Pay As You Go rate per text sent. How much it is depends on the country you're in at the time, based upon what I could find on Verizon's website when I did a search for "pay as you go international".

We know how important it is to stay connected especially while travelling. In this case, if you are connected to Wi-Fi this should not trigger a TravelPass session. Otherwise, it will get activated.

Could you elaborate more on when Travel Pass or International Service Plan gets activated? I've read quite a bit about this in the forums and at the Verizon website, and based upon what I found on the website, I got the impression that using any means to text, call, or run data on apps (background usage included) would trigger whatever international usage plan you have, or if you don't have any, either your phone doesn't work at all (prepaid customers), or you will pay the Pay As You Go rates (postpaid customers). There have been reports from others in the forums who went into bill shock after the fact when they discovered they were billed for overseas WiFi usage. I don't think WiFi use abroad is free because a foreign ISP can tell from your device's IP address and/or SIM card details that you're not a citizen of that country and will therefore pass charges onto Verizon for usage of their network.
If the forum admins or one of the Community Leaders see this, it'd be awesome if one of you does an article about this topic for the Knowledge Hub.
