Verizon continues to charge me for months even after canceling the service and returning the equipment

Can someone explain why canceling a service feels like such a hassle? A few months back, I terminated my FIOS subscription and returned all the equipment, yet Verizon is still charging me around $80 via auto payment. Today, I discovered that my cancellation request didn't process for some unknown reason, and they can't provide an explanation. It's incredibly frustrating. Is this an oversight or part of a deliberate scheme? I'm curious if others have faced similar issues with Verizon.
