Yes, it can be done. You'll need to change themes to a "Today" theme. This will change the overall look and feel of your phone. Check out the Tour 9630 theme section on Crackberry.com here . Specifically look for a theme type that says Today. This will have your calender and message items display directly on your home screen.

I have designed a few Today style themes for the Tour which feature up to 6 message or calendar previews from the home screen. If anyone wants to have a copy for free just send me a private message. I created a few of the Today themes because I like them and there weren't that many out there I liked. Send me a PM here and I will get with you about emailing you a copy.
