I did a sync with my desk top and now all my contacts are duplicate (all 500 of them). so can I delete all the duplicates at once vice doing them one at a time?

You can hook up to DM and delete the Contacts/Address Book database and when your phone re-syncs you should only have single contacts. I had to do this with GMail sync a while back and it worked.
