I have a blackberry curve with unlimited talk and text. I was told to turn my data plan off while I'm in Canada. Is this necessary? Why?

Blackberries will try to connect and will download email and other functions if there is a data connection available, unless you have turned off the data. In Canada, you will be charged international data rates and roaming, and it can be very expensive. THAT's why you were advised to turn off the data functions while in Canada.
