Bandwidth Usage excessive????? HELP

Looking for someone that might know the answer to this.

Here is the run down.....

Hughesnet Satellite (have now) only 475MB per month.

Verizon Mifi 2200, have the 1 GB per month.

All Updates are turned off.

We live remote so no other users.

Averarge usage for us, is right at 475MB per month.

So,

In Six days of "average" usage the VZAccess shows 435.335

I have to Assume that this is just under a Half of a gig, 500.000 right?

I am Also on a Static page, no updating and such and while all auto updates and such are off, (Even Mail is not automatic, have to press Get Mail) but yet I see in the VZAccess and in Status, its Pinging or Sampling using up bandwidth.

Anyone know why it would be using Way more bandwidth than I think it should.

I mean, Megs are Megs and Gigs are Gigs so its hard to understand why the Mifi is sucking up or Seems to be sucking up way more bandwidth than the Hughesnet below average satellite service..

Well, I may have answered my own question here.

Lets see how long this gets to stay on the forum here before it gets cut. Might be interesting. Never the less, I will make sure I get on every forum found and post the same thing.

Seems as my Sampling, Pinging and using up excessive bandwidth is called "Phantom Data"

It also appears that some attorneys have a class action suit against AT&T for this same tactic.

Just means the majority or everyone on 3G is getting taken advantage of, plan and simple.

I do understand, Packets, retries and such but come on here. Hughesnet can shoot there data out into Outer Space and back to me and still under our "average usage" just make it at only 475 MegaBytes a month. Not Gigs, Megs.

I think it will be hard to prove me wrong here but hey, Bring it on , Please....

well it`s happening to me also I have the 5 Gig/Month MiFi 2200, and for 2 years never went over 2 to 3 GIG.. as of Dec 2010, 2 weeks = 3 GIG  3 weeks over 5 GIG    I only use it for emai no downloads what so ever turning off all auto updates and still Verizon is sucking data I dont see... What can we do ????  Verizon has an excuse for everything....  Something is going on and we are paying for it.....

1 gigabyte allowance = 1,024 megabytes

To check your data usage, please follow the steps below:

Sign-in to My Verizon.

Locate the I Want To... section.

Under the BILL column click View Usage.

Then choose View Data Details to view the data sessions on your device.

Please view the data plan options at the link below:

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/mobilebroadband/?page=plans

If you feel a 1-gigabyte allowance is not enough, you can change your data plan online by following the steps below:

1. Click on "Change Plan" icon located under “Plans” in the “I Want To” section at the bottom of your home page.

2. Select “Change Plan Type” and follow instructions provided.

Thank you.

    Hi Kelly.

Changing the data plan is a no brainer for me. Verizon makes it easy to spend more more money

What I was hoping for was maybe shead some light on the Phantom Data thing that is going on.

I can See the bandwidth usage and monitor it with NO problems....

The Problem is, Why does it take...........

Well, please read the first part of this post and maybe see if Verizon can come up with some possible answers, Or, please, keep trying to Call me.

Sorry about voice mail, I have no use for it, just keep trying, Or, just email me a voice number were I can call you.

    Thanks.

    Well folks......

No call from Verzon on this excessive data loss or usage.

This MiFI is Sucking data for what reason ???

You don't seem to give a rats rip but never the less, your screwing me and others..

Who else is getting taken advantage of and paying for Phantom Data ???

I think its time I contact the Attorneys that are after AT&T for this very same problem, Customers paying for Phantom Data.

I wonder how long this will stay here before it gets deleted...

Kelly, this is not the solution. I think this is an issue for the Federal Trade Commission. I am personally tired of getting nowhere and being charged for usage that is double for the same 3 things I have performed on this laptop for over a year very comfortably within the 5GB...now suddenly, the same 3 or 4 small things I do is quadrupled in data usage. There appears to be a problem or some fraudulent activity...not mine to investigate but I will turn it over to those who can look into it and I will start a momentum to bring media attention to this issue rather than be lied to or misled...and this is exactly what I am hearing from the forum members here...that there is a deaf ear . I was told last evening at the Verizon store in Richmond VA that the 16 GB used over a 3 hour period would need to have 5 teenagers with 5 X-boxes going crazy to use up that amount of data...what the heck?? I have no children, no one using my laptop, no change in habitual internet usage over the past YEARS. This seems to fall on deaf ears at Verizon, so it is time to go to the government level.

For me, I have not increased my usage at all, in fact, because of this, I have switched to a phone with a data plan(I had a basic phone), and turn the MIFI off when I'm not using it.  I know I am using less data than before.  Funny thing...this month, 14 days into my plan, I have used less than 3GB.  Thats probably closer to what I used previously.  We'll see if it changes, but for the past several months, I have gotten alerts of 50 or 75% usage by this time.

    A) if you have REAL internet options I suggest staying with them. Mobile internet is not a real replacement for that.

    B) Do you have security enabled on the JetPack? If not anyone with a wi-fi enabled device can connect to you device. And if with security on if don't change the name of your SSID from the defalut and change the default password you're not secure.

Im having the exact same issue.I have been fine for 2 years with the 5 gig plan, normally using about 3 gigs per month. But in December 2010 it started using more, but not over the 5 gig. Then about 10 days into the Jan-Feb billing cycle Verizon called to tell me that I was at 7 gigs of usage. This is absolutely impossibe. Im in a remote area and my pc is off most of the time and Im not a gamer nor do I watch movies on my pc.. I have actually been un-pluging the mifi and turning it off. Now on the last day of my billing cycle, Im at 9.4 gig of usage. I was thinking something was wrong with the myfi, now Im thinking it is a problem with Verizon. I do know if they cant fix this, they are losing a loyal customer.

I have one of the folks from Verizon that is going to call me and see what can be done but this is not the first time I have been down the road such as this.

I am sure they want to check all the things that can be turned off, such as updates and so on but in talking to my Level 6 Engineer friend, the problem is not the end user.

Pretty sure you nailed it, the problem grew bigger in December.

I would get statements like, maybe you have a Trojan virus on your computer causing the excess bandwidth usage. Hey, its all possible, but not likely.

I will come back with a report and for some reason this whole post disappears, I have posts like this over at the EVDOForums.com as well.

All "experts" at Verizon are giving me the direction that my computer has been hacked. Well, I have a government computer expert (from a previous experience with being stalked) who checked my laptop for registry invasions, for keylogger or other malware interference...nada. Nothing. This is definitely looking like a Verizon problem and the recommendation from this official is to send these reports to the Federal Trade Commission. So, I will, as it seems Verizon is not wanting to address the issue other than take my money. I will also write an editorial to the local newspaper or call a reporter that was involved in the internet stalking episode from a few years ago and ask him to do a report on complaints to Verizon regarding the data usage exploitation. I would recommend you each also file a complaint on the FTC website. It is very easy to do.

I am having the same issue right now, I set my parents up with the 5gb plan, and in a total of 10 days (spread out over 2 billing cycles thank god) they used up 50gb of data.  This is absolutely crazy, I called in to the verizon store that sold us the device (I will say that they have had amazing customer service in the past) and they directed us to the customer service line for this issue.  The person on the customer service line agreed to take off half of the charges, however we are STILL BEING CHARGED FOR AROUND $400 WORTH OF OVERAGE! That is crazy, this mifi uses up a ridiculous amount of data regardless of what you are doing on it, 50gb in 10 days is like streaming movies 24/7 which is not something my parents do.  I do not understand why this is even the case, I have 4g on my phone and I use my phones internet for everything (love my phone fyi), and I watch a bunch of youtube videos on it not to mention all of my apps, but I use up no where near 50gb a month, much less 10 days.  Why cant they just take whatever 4g they are using on my phone and use that for house internet so we do not have to deal with all this ghost data that has nothing to do with viewing emails or web pages.

Are they somewhere where others would be close enough to connect and use the connection???

Is the unit restricted with a password and a limit of connections to keep others from accessing it?
