Mifi drops wifi clients after one user connects to VPN

I have a Mifi4510L Jetpack used at remote office. I use Mac OSX 10.8.1, and the other computer is Windows XP SP3. I'm having issues around when I need to log into a  VPN, it will kick off everyone else on the network. They can reconnect and I'm not affect on my Mac machine. It happens everytime I connect using the VPN, but only when we use the hotspot.

Any idea why it may do this?

Perhaps there is not enough bandwidth to both build the VPN tunnel and keep everyone who is connected to the MiFi online at the same time.

Are you on 3G or LTE when this problem happens?

The first thing I would do is update the firmware on your MiFi to the latest version.  Test it out for a few days and see if you can reproduce the problem.

If the firmware update does not help/not possible then look into the various resets of your MiFi.  A temporary problem on the MiFi may be causing it to glitch out on you every time you request your VPN traffic.

Level 1 Reset:

  1. Power down the MiFi
  2. Let the MiFi sit for 30 seconds
  3. Power on the MiFi
  4. Test the connection

Level 2 Reset:

  1. Power down the MiFi
  2. Remove the back cover
  3. Remove the battery
  4. Remove the SIM card
  5. Allow the MiFi to sit for 30 seconds
  6. Reassemble the MiFi
  7. Test the Connection

Level 3 Reset

  1. Power on the MiFi
  2. Remove the back cover
  3. Press and hold the Reset button next to the battery for 10 seconds
    a. Paper clip seems to work best for pressing the reset button
    b. Watch the MiFi E-Ink display to see if all the icons are displayed
  4. Release the Reset button
  5. Reassemble the MiFi
  6. Test your connection
