Does anyone have any ideas on how to configure the Pantech UML295 Data Modem to work with the Asus RT-AC68U Router ?

Tell us what version firmware the router has? Asus made it about as Plug & Play as they can. I’ll assume when you see the “USB Modem” page during Quick Internet Setup, you click Connect, and the router is waiting for additional information on the Basic Configuration page.  Is this correct? Have you studied the router’s System Log for clues?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP :>) !!!!

Firmware Version : 3.0.0.4.374_379; g9540d57

ASUS Support asked me to change the IP address of the router to; 192.168.3.1

That did nothing.  Changed back to 192.168.1.1

I have system log saved as text file.  Not sure how to forward it to you

Did you buy the router at Wal-Mart and do you still have the box and receipt and has it been less than 90 days since you bought it?

The UML295 is a “modem”, changing the router’s LAN side IP address won’t resolve a routing conflict that a modem with a built-in router, like a Jetpack that uses the same IP address as the router, would cause.

Does the UML295 work when attached to a computer and does it require VZ Access Manager? Does VZAM require information from you like a user ID and
password?

RT-AC68U was a gift. purchased from an online retailer (not WalMart) less than two weeks ago.

I wanted to replace a Cradlepoint MBR95 which accepts the UML295 just fine !

It is connected as we speak !  I do not use a user ID or password for access to Verizon

Network with the Cradlepoint. It connects every time like a charm !  Since the RT-AC68U

gets such GREAT reviews I thought I would like to try it Have some lag time within the LAN

which I thought might be corrected with the  more powerful RT-AC68U

Thank-you again for your help !

You’re welcome!  Good feedback!  Try this: Disconnect everything from the Asus except one Ethernet cable between a computer and a LAN port. Connect the modem to the USB 2.0 port. Reset the router by pressing and holding the reset button for 5 to 10 seconds and release. Wait 2 minutes for reset to complete.

Turn off any wireless connection on the computer. Open a browser, it should figure out to use the Ethernet connection and the router’s Quick Internet Setup page should open. If not, navigate to http://192.168.1.1 to open it. I can’t remember the particulars, but I think you press Go and the next page you setup an Admin password so do that.

The next page should be the USB Modem page – again, Asus has made it Plug & Play, all you should have to do is click Connect! Wait three to five minutes and it should figure it out.

If it still fails, continue with the setup and then save the System Log. You can “Mark (highlight), Copy (CTRL C) & Paste (CTRL V)” the last 25-30 lines of it to a post here or do the same thing with the log file itself. The log file is a TXT file you can open with Notepad, and Mark, Copy & Paste it to a message here.

Followed your instructions to the letter. Nothing !    Also, shouldn't this router have some type of accurate clock ?

Set the time to EST but it continues to show date and time in December / January.   Log file appears as Jan 01.  Here is last thirty lines of log file.....Thanks again for all your help !!!

It has a clock, it gets time from the Internet. Once you have an internet connection the log file will show the right date and time.

Look at this part of the log:

Jan 1 00:00:11 kernel: Build_for__Asus_RT-AC56U_k2.6.36_2013-11-07_lke_8.9.0_r216329_b2

Jan 1 00:00:12 syslog: module proxyarp not found in modules.dep

Jan 1 00:00:12 stop_nat_rules: apply the redirect_rules!

Jan 1 00:00:12 WAN Connection: Ethernet link down.

Jan 1 00:00:12 rc_service: wanduck 496:notify_rc restart_wan_if 0

Jan 1 00:00:13 kernel: scsi 0:0:0:0: CD-ROM PANTECH CD-ROM 0000 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2

Jan 1 00:00:13 kernel: scsi 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 5

Jan 1 00:00:14 RT-AC68U: start httpd

Jan 1 00:00:15 kernel: cdc_acm 1-2:1.4: This device cannot do calls on its own. It is not a modem.

Jan 1 00:00:15 kernel: cdc_acm 1-2:1.6: This device cannot do calls on its own. It is not a modem.

Jan 1 00:00:16 disk monitor: be idle.

At the end of 11 seconds it identifies the firmware. During second 12 it handles routine chores where it figures out “Ethernet link down” – this is normal. It continues by launching “wanduck to restart if 0” (it has not started, try again!) It spent the remainder of second 12 and all of second 13 to figure out it is a SCSI CD-ROM made by PANTECH. By second 15 it declares the device is not a modem.

The next move is to update the firmware. You might email Asus that log file, highlighting the above section. Ask them if they can say with certainty that firmware 4.376.3626 dated 11/14/2014 will fix the problem. Tell them you don’t want to update the firmware and unnecessarily risk bricking the router. Tell them, it works perfectly on your Craddlepoint MBR95 router too.

I hope you get this worked out!

Interesting point you discovered ! Asus recognizes the device as a CD-ROM.  In researching the topic on various blogs I noticed others have experienced similar problems when the install firmware updates

I've updated the RT-N66U firmware to the latest, 3.0.0.4.374.720. If I look at the system log for the router it appears as though the USB modem is being detected as a CDROM:

Jan 1 00:00:26 kernel: scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROM PANTECH CD-ROM 0000 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2

Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can try? Do you think grabbing RMerlin's latest build would help?

I have the same issue. Anyone ever find a solution?

This is less than encouraging news. It sounds like Pantech may have fixed something which actually broke the modem with Asus routers, and Asus has done nothing to help fix it. Thanks for the feedback!
