Tethering/ Netbook Question

Okay so I just got a brand new netbook and was wondering exactly how tethering works? Could someone explain to me? I am not really interested into the whole mifi thing because it is so expensive so basically I just want to know the cheapest way to connect my netbook to the internet through Verizon's network.

You have to purchase a data plan for your netbook or have a phone with a data plan that is also capable of tethering to your computer. All the available plans are listed above.
