Why can I not access the usage of the MiFi via wirelessly? (Other than logging in to the web site)
Unfortunately that option is not available at this time. Great suggestion though! Currently you can check your usage from the VZ Access Manager or by signing into your My Verizon account.

Would it be possible to create a widget in windows that could sit on the desktop and update itself every so often?
Let it be known that the usage meter is virtually useless. Don't buy into the fanbois use Netmeter program option It doesn't work all that well either. My last usage update was 3 days ago on VZ Access manager. We really don't have a reliable way to know let alone check accuracy when it comes to usage. I wonder if independent auditors monitor Verizon just like they do all the gas pumps around the United States to ensure accuracy and make sure we aren't being squeezed. Just a FYI there are a gazillion complaints against Verizon on the Better Business Bureau website. If your unhappy voice you complaint there. I did.
