The device is connecting slowly and for some reason now at 1x.

I did a factory reset and now it will not take a software firmeware update

What device is it? Power off the device, remove and reinstall the battery (if removable) and the SIM card. If this doesn’t improve the situation, leave it on and connected to external power for a day or so, because failed firmware updates may try again. If the device is still under warranty, you might call Customer Service (800) 922-0204.
