2 nagging issues with Droid 2 / Verizon - USB/64-bit windows, Backup Assistant

(Duplicate of post on Motorola Owners Forum for Droid 2, Sep 2 2010)

1) Is there a working usb driver for the Droid 2 connecting to 64-bit Windows Vista?  After making USB connection, Droid 2 tries every USB connection on computer (Preparing SD Card), with notification sound (Default is "Droid") so it takes about 2-3 minutes to get a USB connection, after listening to about 20 "Droid"s.  According to Verizon tech support, this causes the phone to finally default to a generic USB setting.  Setting USB debugging ON does the same thing, without the 20 bad attempts first.  Again according to V TS, Motorola is working on a 64-bit driver, "to be released sometime soon."  How soon?

2) After going through inital setup (gmail, location settings, Backup Assistant), a Droid 2 will have Backup Assistant 1.0 AND 2.2 RUNNING on the phone at the same time.  In my case, this caused the phone's 10 generic # contacts to OVERWRITE the 215 contacts I had on Verizon's Backup Assistant site.  Had to work with 2nd level Tech Support to get contacts off old phone, the one one in use prior to "upgrading" to Droid 2.  Cannot Uninstall 1.0 or 2.2.  Buyer beware!  Use Backup
Assistant to dump out a contact.csv file BEFORE turning on the Droid 2.  Is there a way to get the Droid 2 down to 1 version of Backup Assistant?

Update1 Sep 3 2010:

I have already tried the 4.6.5 drivers - no luck.  These are the ones VZ tech support points you to when you call.

When USB finally syncs (not debug mode) you see two shares, your SD card and a hidden (according to VZ) share called "CD Drive (X:smileyhappy: Motorola" with 4.7.1 drivers (for Windows 7, according to an earlier VZ support call).  These don't work either.

I believe VZ level 2 tech support when they say Moto is working on a 64-bit driver for Vista.

Update2 Sep 6 2010:

Looks like Verizon has pulled all references to Backup Assistant working on Droid 2 from their website.

In a conference call with Moto and Vz tech support yesterday, they basically told eachother that it was their responsibility to fix,

  1. I have posted a link to an article below that would have the USB/PC drivers for your Droid device. It does not indicate that it is not supported by the 64bit version of Windows Vista. The information on the drivers actually states:
  • A 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 2000®, Windows XP®, Windows Vista® or Windows 7® Operating system.

http://www.motorola.com/consumers/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=bda09ec8009a0210VgnVCM1000008806b00aRCRD

**Unfortunately, if the USB/PC driver is still not supported for the 64bit version of Windows Vista, there is no ETA to when an updated driver will become available.

2.      On the Backup Assistant issue, the following re best practices and general information to avoid a contacts issue.

·       When utilizing Backup Assistant to manage contacts, you should disable Google contact syncing to avoid duplicating contact entries.

Ensure your contacts were previously backed up on your old phone. If so, just do the following below:
http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=31431

·       ***If you wish not to use backup assistant, you can export your .CSV from the Verizon Wireless website, and Import it into Google. I have provided that instruction below:

http://search.vzw.com/?do=viewdoc&id=27566
**Just select the “Importing contacts to Gmail link for the proper importing instructions.

***Please Note***Preloaded applications such as Visual Voicemail, Backup Assistant and City ID cannot be removed from the device, or downgraded.

Hope this helps!

1.)  Looks like Moto removed the 4.6.5 drivers and are trying to stage a new 4.7.1 driver out there.  Interesting, the drivers on the hidden share on the phone are 4.7.1 also.

Goto to the link, click on Motorola 4.7.1 Driver with MotoConnect* and you get We're Sorry...Page is inaccessible.

2)  I have 2 versions of backup Assistant installed on my Droid 2, versions 1.0 and 2.2.  Please read my post.  Having 2 versions of software with the same name on the same machine is usually considered bad practice.  Phone came with 1.0 baked into it and Verizon / Google setup adds 2.2.  Neither can be removed by the user WHICH IS THE SOURCE OF FRUSTRATION FOR ABOUT 1/2 THE POSTS I SEE.

Go here: http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/drivers.html and download what drivers you need.  Don't know if you need the app for the phone or not, but they work on the Droid.

I didn't like backup assistant after setting it up so I disabled it.

I also didn't use google for my contacts. I exported from Outlook and imported directly into the Droid 2.
