If you turn on wifi does it disable the 3g or does it stay on all the time and search in low signal areas

Yes, turning on wifi does disable 3G so, if you are in a poor signal area, and wifi is available, using wifi will help out your battery, however, remember to turn off wifi when not available, as that is one of the bigger battery killers (it will continue to scan for wifi as well).
