4.08 update wont install

My phone had the gingerbread update last night and phone was working normal today (with the exception of low space icon which had previously been popping up despite space being available) and then tonight I get a OTA for 4.08, press install and my phone tells me that I don't have enough internal storage for the update to complete. I have 557 MB of internal storage free (73%), have deleted over half my apps since the gingerbread update, have cleared data and cache from apps, don't use the stock email app and have very few text messages saved so I'm not understanding how I don't have enough internal storage. Has anyone else experienced this or have any insight into it? -_-

Mine didn't install either.  Complaining about free space as well.  Internal storage is 6.5 GB free, and phone memory is 505 MB free.  I think the free space bug in the current build we are on is causing a problem.  They are trying to fix it with the new 4.0.8 build, but the current bug is preventing us from updating.

oh geez...I got on XDA where someone had posted the new .Zip file for the 4.0.8 update. I tried to manually update it and it didn't work either. When it came back up, it said I still didn't have enough space. The low disk space error wasn't present before I shut down. This is stupid. I guess the only other thing I can try is a factory reset, and do the update before I add any apps or set anything else up.

I'm having the same issue. I quite often get the "low space" notification, which I get rid of by clearing data from my applications, though it seems ridiculous, because I have a high amount of available space, like everyone else. But the new update to 4.08 came and won't install. The solutions provided in the pop-up (clear mail from Gmail, Outlook, etc.) are impossible, because the "Clear Data" option for those apps is greyed out. Also, I'm not deleting email that I deliberately saved just for an update.

This whole thing is ridiculous. We clearly have space on our phones, of all kinds, including RAM, but the space is low? This is a bug that needs to be fixed.

Same here low space delete apps and app data.  Plenty of space on my phone.

I found that if I factory reset my phone, it allowed me to update without the low space notifciation. It sucks, but at least the update came through successfully.

Same thing here. What do we need to do after deleting app data to try the update again?

A factory reset will remove ALL of my things, though, won't it? Is there a way to back everything up before I do that?

I woke to a notification to install 4.08 update. I had 523MB available space phone memory & 6.47G available space internal storage. I had no Low Space notifications. After attempting to install the update I received the same failed message noting not enough space & advising me to uninstall apps; mail, maps, etc. I uninstalled apps that I had installed from Android Market (optional) & planned to reinstall later. This increased available phone memory to 533MB & availaable phone storage to 6.48G. I then followed the instructions on Verizon's page for a failed update to remove the battery & restart the phone & I would be prompted to install the update. I have yet to be prompted to for an update. I'm still running 2.3.4 & it says my system is up to date.

Good to know I'm not alone is this problem. I'll be following this thread too.

I'm having the same exact problem here.  Verizon told me to do a factory reset.  HTC said not to.

I'm sick of having Sprint app's in the app store (in addition to the phone cycling on it's own, etc, etc).

if you purchased apps they shouldnt be removed. the free apps youll have to redownload, but my important apps make me sign in with an email address so I can revert back to my previous settings.

For example: I have the key ring app, and once i signed in everything synched up. i also have zedge ringtones and was able to import everything as well since its saved to my sd card.

This same thing happened to me. I did a soft reset on my phone, how do I try the update again? When I go into the update screen it says my phone is up to date, but it is still at 4.06.

Besides apps, my downloaded ringtones, texts, and pictures will be deleted, correct? I know how to move my pics to my comp for safe keeping, can I do the same with sms? Also, if I move my apps to my SD card, will they be safe?

Not sure about moving apps to the card, but I dont think youll have any problems. Might want to get a 2nd opinion on that one haha. I have my ringtones and pictures backed up to my sd card. The only thing youll lose is the texts, unless you have a messaging app that backs it up for you. I use handcent messaging and it allows an option to save texts, but theyre usualy not too important to me.

After being the phone with Verizon for almost two hours (and no solution), I was left with impression that unless they get a certain number of tech support calls regarding this problem, they will not look into resolving it.  To them it is not a problem - yet.

I was able to get the update to install without doing a factory re-set. I posted it in another thread

Let me know if it helps you.

I finally got it to install using the above method of clearing the cache partition. I did have to do it twice though. The first time I tried it gave me the same error of not enough space being on the phone. So I deleted basically all of my apps (I kept a few and had about 100MB used space) and had to reboot and clear the cache partition again. Once I turned off my phone I then manually set my date till a month ahead, went to About Phone -> Systems Update and the update was redownloading and finally went thru. Pretty frusturating. OK actually REALLY frusturating that it took such effort to update my phone but whatever. Anyone else had luck with that?
