Ever since I got my Droid Charge I've had the same problem - 4G freezes couple times a day. I have 3-4 bars, 4G logo but data " arrows" are gray, one of them blinks green and browser cant download anything. Airplane mode on/off is pretty much the only thing that helps.
I've been to two Vzw stores and they have no idea whats going on ( to tell the truth they're pretty useless ). Any ideas what could be causing this???

In various areas this will happen, noticed it while traveling just not to that extent. At times the receiving will seem to drop then kick back in , keep in mind the network is expanding and is still in constint testing mode much like 3g was in the earlier stages.
I only use 4g LTE mode when I need to stream high end video such as HQ youtube videos or news clips (which fit the screen nicely).
Other then that I stay in 3g for general facebook updates, email, and web browsing. Helsp save battery power as well.
I had issues with the ATT network more often that is why i got off it, so far verizons is much faster and stable even in early stages.

Thanks for sharing your concerns. In regards to the 4g freezing it should be addressed in a software update that is being rolled out. As far as the 3g goes check you settings by doing the following :
Settings->Wireless & network->Mobile networks->System selection and then selecting CDMA
Once this is set you should have no problem with your 3g service.
Please repost if you continue to have any issues
Thank You!

Update doesn't fix the issue of having full bars and 4g showing but nothing is going on. It seems like the device has a hard time determining that the 4g signal isn't working and that it needs to pick up 3g. I have found it will sometime switch on its own but I takes so long that you feel it's necessary to start changing settings or pull the battery. I personally think the Charge is way better at switching than the Thunderbolt and that's why I don't really complain about it much but the problem is there that could be made better with some work on vzw or samsungs behalf.

The problem with this procedure is for those of us that frequently travel in to and out of 4G areas. We want the 4G when it's there but we want 3G connectivity when 4G is no longer viable. In some of those 4G to 3G handoffs, we still get no connectivity even after the update. It doesn't appear this update really impacted this problem.
I reported an issue at the Pinerra Bread location at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntingon, L.I. This is only a short walk from the Verizon store there. My wife's Iphone on Verizon got data at this location while my Charge (with the update) showed 3 bars of 'something'. It didn't show it as 3G, 4G or even 1X. I got no data at all and got the 'connectivity problem' yellow box.

I still have the freezes - couple times a day 4g just stops working: I have full bars, 4g logo but only green arrow is blinking. On/off airplane mode helps and when I dont do anything it loses data and after 2-3 min switches to 3g
I tried factory reset, taking the battery out & all the recent updates + had my tower settings updated by vzw employee.
None of this helped.

Having a similar issue with connectivity to a Network Extender. I can be sitting 10 feet away from it and my Droid Charge will go from 3G to 1x to no signal. I haver it set in CDMA mode. We have no 4g coverage around here,.
After my first call to Verizon they opened a trouble ticket on the Network extender and teh NEtwork Engineering team upped the settings of the signal strength - appeard to help for 3 days but the issue came back. Next call to them, the phone all of a sudden started working normal just before the tech was going to excalate the ticket - for 45 minutes it was dropping the signal, then all of a sudden it worked - for a day that is :<
When it does drop the data signal, the phone signal still shows full strength and voice calls are not impacted, just data.
Calling again tomorrow. Not sure if it is the phone of the Network Extender or a combination of the two, but the phone doesn't have a problem outside of my house (once I go 1/10th of a mile from my house where I get coverage)

That's the problem in many areas, you're outside and you get 4G and you come into a wood frame house with no signal degrading steel and the 4G still goes in & out. It just seems that Verizon's 4G signal is not very robust...at least in certain areas. Then there's the problem of certain areas showing up as 4G on the Verizon map and there is simply no 4G coverage there.
I've also experienced that full set of bars with no data, so you're not alone on that issue either.
