my Droid Bionic has been disconnecting its 4G at random times and very often. When its using 3G, it seems much faster than the 4G connection as well. I would definitely appreciate some help or advice on what i can or should do. thank you.
I have the same problem in the Chicago area...also on a Droid Bionic. If I run SpeedTest, I have about a 50/50 chance of it completing without a data disconnect. First noticed this happening yesterday while using Navigation. I rebooted today and removed the battery. No change, and very frustrating.
I'm in Southern California and 4G also drops when doing anything that requires data. I also have the Droid Bionic. Hopefully this gets resolved soon because it's very frustrating...
There is a maintenance update available for the DROID Bionic. It might take a week or two to reach your device, but you can certainly check to see if you can pull it down to your phone.

I'm in Savannah, GA and having the same problems and have so since I got the phone last November but it seems to be getting worse. I hardly ever have a strong 4G signal and my phone does not toggle (for lack of another word) between 4G and 3G which means I'm left with Zero G! I hope the update arrives soon, but as usual I'm sure the south will be the last to see it!
I finally received the 5.9.905 update. I am still frequently being disconnected from 4g. If I switch to 3g, then it is completely stable...I just cannot stand the 3g speed after zipping along on 4g.
Other than this small group, I don't see complaints reported any where else. Is it just Bionic owners with this problem? Just users in a certain area/region? If anyone else is experiencing 4g disconnects, please state your device and market. I've had this behavior for a week!
Droid Bionic - Chicago area
4 bionic users in my department. All of us have started getting frequent disconnects from 4g starting in the last couple of weeks. I also have a 4g aircard at my desk, but don't have any problems with it maintaining connection.
i got the update for my bionic but there's still frequent disconnecting. anyone else getting this?
Yes. I received the update 5 days ago and still experiencing the same problem on my Bionic in the Chicago Area. I've switched to 3g which is completely stable on my device.
Wolf - what market are you in?
Just found a similar discussion with the same issues in a Motorola Razr forum.
i'm in the central valley area in california
I was ok after the update for a couple of days, but today I started to have trouble with 4G dropping out again. The problem only seems to be with Motorola devices because my daughter has an LG phone and she has no problems.
Over in the Razr forum, VZW Support recommended installation of an app called Restore Connectivity Settings. Some users say it resolved their issue. For others, it did not. App is written by Motorola for Razr, so cannot be installed on Bionic.
Feeling your pain here in Los Angeles as well as others too:
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/775204
I've had 2 BIONICs both with the latest updates and still having disconnect issues. Might be me just being stubborn, but I just think its silly that support recommended that I switch to CDMA only since its been stable. I might as well kept with my DroidX in that case.
Also in L.A. (Westside - Southbay to Beverly Hills)
My Data Connection problems started with the application of the .905 update. Calls to tech support have been pleasant but unhelpful.
VZW shipped a new SIM which I will try but, I don't think it's the SIM. Anecdotally from other online sources, there are programming changes occurring (Bionic and Razr) in anticipation of ICS.
If this problem mirrors the past; all will become clear once the problem is resolved - unfortunately well after many of us have spent hours trying to 'fix' a device that isn't really broken but certainly appears to be broken.
;-)
i found this and tried it out, so far, it's been working out just fine, but then again, it's only for about 20 or so minutes. This isn't my actual work, just something i found off an actual Bionic only forum.
"I discovered that if you put the phone into airplane mode, power down. Power up, wait for the apps and everything to boot up, like a solid boot up. Airplane mode will still be engaged, turn it off, while you do this, take a look at your lte signal do a glitch, it flashes from one set of bars to another. One set apears to have more bars, that are finer.
They quickly disapear and you see your usual four bar 4glte signal. At this point, if in a good coverage area(i have two bars al the time at home) I can almost guaruntee your phone wont skip a single beat. I am amazed that this worked so well. I mean, i do not in anyway want to refuse the new hardware i am receiving and becoming a bionic vet... But the fact of the matter is, since i bought my phone on luanch day, it has NEVER worked this good."
unfortunately this didnt last too long :smileysad: oh well, guess we need to search even more for a fix....
I have the Thunderbolt and have had issues with 4G dropping in Chicago as well. I had no issues in NYC or Maryland but its happened pretty consistently in Chicago. I did a factory reset but it didn't help.
Same problem in Republic, MO would drop calls all the time, now the last few days I had no service in the afternoons then the phone started to reboot now in airplane mode can not turn it of so I have no service...

So here is another way to get by and still use 4gLTE until Verizon determines the source of data connectivity issues experienced by their customers.
I came across the turn-airplane-mode-on-powerdown-power-up-wait1minute-airplane-mode-off solution...and just like the powerdown-remove-battery+sim-card-wait5minutes-reassemble-powerup solution, it worked great...but eventually data disconnects returned. I realized that the initial data connection/authentication to LTE was stable. It was my phone's later attempts to reconnect that would not remain stable. I had my Bionic's settings-battery and data manager-battery mode-custom battery saver set to turn-off data during peak hours after 15 minutes (I did this originally to extend battery life by only having the antenna powered on when needed). I changed this setting to Always On (selecting Performance Mode will do the same), then turned the phone off/on. I did this 10 days ago, and I have only once experienced the data connection flashing from blue-white-gone-white-blue-white-etc since. BUT WHAT ABOUT BATTERY LIFE?-Impact to battery life is minimal as I am still able to make calls and moderately uses apps and still have more than 5% battery after 16 hours off the charger.
I still feel Verizon has a network problem to resolve, but I prefer this solution to leaving my phone in 3g, which does easily reconnect to the network whenever I wake the phone. This solution is not going to work well for someone that moves in+out of 4gLTE areas, or becomes disconnected from data entirely. It has worked well for me in the Chicago area as both work and home are in good LTE coverage areas.
In in the SF, CA with a Bionic that has these data issues. I've been having them from day one as well. Since then I've been doing the take-out-battery and wait method but even that's starting to fail. I've always had my phone on "Performance Mode", so that won't help. I'd appreciate any thoughts on it.
Do you still have data connection issues if you force the phone to 3g?
I bought my Bionic within 30 days of release. My data connection problems only started in early June. This was before the 5.9.905 update. 905 did nothing to change my situation. If you've had a data connection issue since you purchased, I'd say either get a new SIM card from Verizon, or return the phone.
No, I don't have the issues if I force it to be on 3G. It's only on 4G. I'll give Verizon a call again ask for a new SIM card to see if that helps. Returning the phone will follow. I got the phone last October. When it started to happen, the VZW reps would say that a software update was coming and it would fix the issue. I think 2-3 or updates have come since then and they have not solved my issues.
I was running well until the 905 update. My 4G has been in the crapper ever since then. I had assumed it was a flaw with the 905 release.
We want you to fully enjoy the capabilities of your Droid Bionic eelinares! Did you receive your new SIM card? Did it improve the performance? If you find the difficulties continue, I recommend keeping the device in 3G/CDMA mode for a more stable connection. Sincerely,JonathanK_VZWVZW SupportFollow Us on Twitter@VZWSupport

The problem is in the phone (and it is not a Motorola problem)
Can you expand on that?
ubm0158:
Why do you feel, "The problem is in the phone (and it is not a Motorola problem)" and do you have a possible solution besides replacing the Bionic with a different phone? I'm open to any solution recommendations...
I still have to perform a power-down-up cycle two or three times each week. I can live with this, but it does not make me happy with Verizon...which is where the problem likely exists. Their phones should consistently work as designed on their network.
I have had the Bionic since October, 2011. After a couple of firmware updates, MOTO and Verizon finally got it right. I could go a full month with no problems....till 905.X875 came out. Phone is crap with this update. In addition to the constant data connection issues, the widely noted hiss-ing sound returned when earphones are plugged into the phone's jack. Even the GPS radio has been badly impacted by the 905 update as it can take 5 minutes for a GPS lock. Never had any GPS radio issues till 905 was pushed. I am out of contract and will never go back to MOTO if they don't get this bad firmware update fixed fast.
Now that you mention it, I have noticed that the Google Maps and Google Navigation do take longer to find a satellite. That would only take a few seconds before the latest update.
I have an HTC Thunderbolt... I have been having the same problem in San Diego, and previously in San Francisco, for about the past 2-3 months. Did a cross country trip, was fine in the middle of the country. Thought it maybe was resolved, but once I got back into Phoenix/San Diego areas, started again. Went to the VZW store, and they replaced the SIM card on the spot. Did not fix it, technician suggested doing a hard reset. But through my research, that won't fix the problem either.
and if phones from different manufacturers are having a similar issue, I think it would be safe to assume its a VZW network issue that needs to be resolved. And we should be refunded our money for paying for a service that we can't use, but good luck with that right....
So I have the Bionic and for about 3 months now I have had 4G issues.
It goes like this...
4G is blue and up and running while the phone is on the home screen..."Hey facebook looks fun let's get on there"
BOOM 4G goes out the instant I try to load facebook, or any sort of Internet based app. (Browser/Twitter...)
This is in the Bay Area (San Jose specifically). My buddy has a Bionic and is in Minnesota and is having the same issue, the same with my mother who is in Portland, OR (she has a Droid 4) All motorola phones.
I called Verizon yesterday and explained all this and they are going to be sending me a Galaxy Nexus. (they wanted to do the Razr, but with battery and the fact that it is a Moto phone I wanted to try a different Brand).
Thanks for sending me a new phone, and I hope this changes my issues, but I doubt it will sadly :smileysad:
They're sending me a new phone but I didn't get to choose: I'm just getting another Bionic. Did they give you a choice or you asked for it? If I have issues with the replacement, I'll ask that they replace it with another phone - a Galaxy Nexus would do just fine.
They said a new Bionic at first but I asked about a different Brand because I knew a few other Bionics and other Motorola devices that had issues and the lady had to get it approved by her supervisor.
That's helpful. I like the phone so hopefully my new one works out. Good luck with yours!
Hey! please let us know if that's any help because that same connection problem ..."Hey facebook looks fun let's get on there" and BOOM no connection, happens to me 8.5/10 times (plus ANY other data using app) and i'm at my whits end!!!
I had the same problem that everyone has been talking about. I've been calling and complaining since early this year. Like you, I did not get the Bionic last September just to keep it in CDMA only mode. After 905 I started calling continually - went through the hard reset and reinstall everything (TWICE), then installed a new SIM, then VZN sent me a new phone. NOTHING worked. Finally, I get a tech that tells me it's a known problem with the Bionic and that Moto is working on it but they have no idea when it's going to be resolved. So I've agreed to let them send me a Razr in exchange for my Bionic. I've got my fingers crossed that things will be different (not sure how ICS will play into this, but I've seen a lot of good comments from folks that got Razrs with ICS pre-loaded). I can get an upgrade in May according to the website, so I'll be paying attention to reviews on current and upcoming phones.
I have been on forums and boards like this for months. Majority opinion is Verizon has an authentication problem with their LTE network. Why they keep replacing SIM cards. Some of their tech's say the LTE network requires constant check-in's and when a check-in fails data connectivity is lost. Some times turning on and off Air Plane mode works, other times gotta do a complete shut down. Also have read that MOTO phones have the biggest problem with the Bionic being by far the worst. Many tech editors are now calling it the worst LTE phone released to date - good hardware, terrible connectivity. My problem...I have the desk dock, car dock, extra batteries and a battery charger. Verizon doesn't replace accessaries when they release a lemon phone :smileysad:
Truth. I had the Laptop or whatever it's called for the Bionic (WebTop?), extended battery, car dock etc....sad to lose all that.
I got the Galaxy Nexus as a replacement, had the same issues, just took it into a store and they replaced the SIM and it did nothing. Did a factory reset, it did nothing. Now they are sending me another Nexus. I am just laughing at this whole situation. Will update again when I get the new device...
It is a network problem. Calling tech support, swapping sim cards is nothing
but a waste of time. Verizon knows of the problem, although they will not
admit to it. Changing phones will not fix the problem either. The first
thing you have to do is (Edited post to comply with VZW Community ToS)

Did the Galaxy Nexus they sent you have ICS? And, you still had problems with it? I have a friend that has the Moto RAZR with the same issues as us, but the ICS update fixed them. My hope was that ICS would fix the issues for us as well, but given your post maybe that wont happen.
By the way, the new Bionic I got is still having the same issues. I'll be calling tech support this coming week to see what I can try next - maybe a RAZR.
My problems started about the same time everyone else's did. My Thunderbolt used to get a solid 4G connection (except for the hotspot which never worked). Over the months, the 4G data stream would drop out every time I tried to use a burst of data in Facebook, Trip Advisor App, or whatever. I did all the usual things VZW asked me to do (master reset, SIM card swap, battery pull). I've also tried the many workarounds mentioned here. After calling since January I finally convinced them to send me a reconditioned Thunderbolt. I received it last night and this one is a bit worse than the one I sent back. Its very frustrating. I have not had one rep acknowledge this is a network problem. I don't know what to do at this point. I'm ready to buy a new device out of pocket but I don't know what to buy. All the 4G handsets seem to be acting the same way.
I've been paying $130 a month for a phone that works once in a while. Its a shame because the Thunderbolt excels in every other arena other than data and battery life. My next move may be to see if they will let me cancel without an ETF. This is definitely not what I signed up for. If I want lousy/spotty service I can go back to Sprint for half the price.

I am heavily convinced there's something wrong with the Chicago area VZW LTE (river north and loop). I never had any issues in NYC, NY, PA, MD, OH, CT, VT.
Now that you mentioned it I thought it was just a fluke that I could use my Mobile Hotspot ($30/mo) to tether to my laptop while traveling through Stowe, VT and up and down the coast of Maine in Late July. Maybe it is a Chicago thing. I've traveled in Bloomington, Peoria and St. Louis and experiences have not been much better. In any event its getting noticeably worse in Illinois. Most of my time is spent in the SW suburbs (DuPage County).
unl 4G/mobile hotspot
The RAZR came last night. It's installed with ICS and I have not had any issues with it since I activated. Hopefully it stays that way. Good luck with your new device!
I had these 4G issues all over CA including: SF Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego.
FWIW, I was also one of the first to get a TB. It had issues forever. Then, not too far back, there was an update and it actually seemed to be able to switch from 3G to 4G and back effortlessly. Now, with no recent updates, it is again having issues switching from 4G-3G-4G. I agree that the problem is probably NOT the phone but the system. Tom
