4G with current Droid X

In today's local paper, there was an article that said Verizon Wireless' 4G would be fully rolled out in this area very soon.  I asked the guy at the VW store today, and he said he thinks it will be about 6 - 8 months.  He also said that my current Droid X will be able to access the 4G network, and there will be no change to the pricing of my current plan.  Is this true?  Will the Droid X be able to access the 4G network??

Hey, Loyd, we're covered in ice, as I mentioned earlier, LOL

The Droid X doesn't have a 4G radio in it. What the rep probably meant (and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one) was that the X will work on the network, but at its usual 3G speed. Which is fine with me, because of the reasons I mentioned earlier as well.

The Black-Helicopter crowd was all abuzz that there was a secret 4G radio in the Droid X that would be magically unlocked when 4G became available. Well, I doubt it...:smileyvery-happy:

From what I was told, the Droid X will not be capable of receiving 4G.

It all depends on how you look at it.  Consider the situation like one of those hologram cards you'd get in a pack of baseball cards years ago, from different angles there were different pictures.

The same is true with the Droid X and 3G/4G.  Is the droid X radio capable of faster speeds than current 3G speeds?  Yes.

Explanation:

The Droid X runs on an EVDO Rev A radio.  But there is an EVDO Rev B which is simply a software change at the EVDO Towers, no user end changes, it simply changes how the tower manages signals.  The reason VZW didn't bother with the Rev B update is because they wanted to focus on the 4G LTE program.  The key here is that 4G towers will also have the Rev A & B backwards compatible programing.

To give a little clarity:  EVDO Rev A has a max download of 2.5-3.1 mbps, the carrier generally caps you around 2.5.  EVDO has a max download speed of 4.9mbps and the ability to expand beyond those speeds if the carrier bundles more channels together for data. Now the likelihood that carriers will push this as far as is possible is fantasy land thinking.  However, even @ 4.9mbps you'd be smashing Sprint's 4G speeds with your 3G device.

I hope I made that all clear enough to understand.

If that could be done it would make the X an incredible a litttle faster when away from Wi-fi but the chance of it happening is Slim at best As Verizon knows as the 4G Hardware hit's the shelves what do you think most people will choose, an if the X gets gingerbred that would probably be the last OS it gets after that who knows: i might be wrong but with 4 new:  4Gers from HTC, LG, Moto, an ol Samy it might be hard for our ol X to compete with em!  :smileyindifferent:
