A legitimate froyo question

Does anyone know if when 2.2 is available I will be able to download it via wi-fi? My phone is not connected to the verizon network and will not be until December.

This is just a guess based on watching Verizon do things for a while now...

You won't be able to "officially" download the update over the internet from Verizon. And I can understand why, for several reasons.

However, people have been downloading leaked versions of 2.2 for a few weeks now. So someone, somewhere, will post the official version somewhere on the internet that can be downloaded to a PC (alright, already, to a MAC, too!) from the internet and installed. Look at sites like Phandroid.com, Droid-life.com, and other Android fanboy sites.

And keep yer eyes open, anything is possible. Verizon just might make the update available on the internet. However, knowing their penchant for control, that's not likely.

Thanks, that kind of answers my question, I guess my real question is that when they release the update, will I be notified on my phone or is that just reserved for phones that are connected to the verizon network?

Actually, Rock, I'm mistaken (between this and the mistaken Froyo post elsewhere around here, I'm batting 1000 tonight....:smileymad:))

The update CAN indeed be downloaded via Wifi. However, you must have an account and number with Verizon before you can get the update from Verizon.

However, all of the alternative options I mentioned earlier still apply.

If updates are available now to existing phones, do you think that a Droid X WITH 2.2 will be available for purchase also?

Or still "at the end of the month" ??

Will Verizon advertise their availability, or do I just have to keep checking?

No, the Droid X 2.2 is NOT available. Yet. It's coming. Read this thread all the way through again and see where I made a mistake.

When the 2.2 update for the X (finally) becomes available, the ones in the stores will need to be updated. The employees might open then all and update them, but I don't know about that. At any rate, the X's will eventually ship with 2.2, somewhere around the time the update is released.

And that, in and of itself, is bound to the the cause of many more posts about 2.2....:smileyvery-happy:

You will not be able to download Froyo until you activate your phone on the Verizon network. I doubt that you will be able to download it over wifi. My assumption is that the upgrade servers are not connected to the internet, and are only on the Verizon 3g network, therefore it will unavailable to the phone until it is activated on the network.

gerio is right about the leaked 'official' update. If you can find it, and are willing to do it, but it has been reported that loading up the leaked update will cause your phone NOT to be able to update OTA later when it is available. I have not seen anything to dispute that yet out in the net.

The previous comments are my assumptions and could be wrong. :smileyvery-happy:

According to that mysterious "Droid update"email I got yesterday (okay, not that mysterious, my daughter has my old Droid with a line on my account), the update can indeed be downloaded and installed over the internet (wifi). Instructions for doing so are provided in the subsequent links to the support pages.
