I DON'T KNOW IF I'M USING IT WRONG BUT I HAVE TO CHARGE BATTERY AT LEAST 3X A DAY.  I DON'T USE MY PHONE THAT MUCH... WELL WHEN I FIRST GOT MY DROID I DID USE IT ALOT BUT NOW DAYS I ONLY USE TO MAKE PHONE CALLS AND BATTERY STILL DIES ON ME SO QUICK..

IS THIS HAPPENING ONLY ON MY PHONE????

ALSO, RINGTON SOUNDS FINE WHEN SOMEONE CALLS ME BUT ALARM SOUND IS SO LOW EVEN WHEN I SET THE ALARM SOUND TO LOUDEST.

I would first check to see whether the battery chargers are defective or not. (I have gone through one defective car mount, one defective muttimedia deskmount, and I need to wiggle my wall charger in order for it to start charging my phone battery. It seems as though the wiring that goes to the battery in these products is not always manufactured very carefully.

Are you charging through USB? Better to charge, for various reasons I think,  through a wall charger or the mutlimedia dock (Ithink they have a trickle down function and I am not so sure this happens when charging through USB).

Also, download a free app or two that gives a more detailed reading of the battery charge. I think this will help determine whether you have a bad battery or bad wires in your charging method. In any case, what you describe does indeed sound like a problem (unless you are making wickedly intensive use of every function on the phone nonstop, which would indeed drain the battery).

My phone was turned on this morning at 6:30 AM as I walked out the door. At 10:00 I looked at it & the battery was already dead. I have not touched it. No incoming or outgoing calls, no texting, no e-mail.... Nothing. Is this the life time I can count on for this phone? Approximately 3.5 hrs? Do I have to keep it charging constantly? Is there a problem with a bad battery?
I had charged it up last night so when I turned it on this am it was all the way to the top. What exactly are the free apps I can download to help find the problem please?

YESS!! I am having the same problem with my new Pantech Jest phone. I have never had a phone with such a low battery life as this one. Very disappointed. It doesn't hold a charge for an entire day. Ridiculous.

This is does not sound like a problem with the phone! It just sounds like a bad battery (or a bad battery charger). Really. Just read all the reivews and all the user reports on all the forums. (There are many, many other droid and android forums with separate forums specifically for the Droid X). If a new battery (and/or charger) does not fix the problem, then you have a bad Droid X unit and should get a replacement. What you describe is not normal for the Droid X.

I can offer a few solutions and insights as to why you may be having battery issues.  This is from my own personal trial/error and from other insightful information I have received from other forums posters.

1. When I did some tests over a couple weeks, I noticed that the biggest drain on my battery was the display, NOT the applications (I used System Panel).  My screen is set to "auto brightness" and smart mode.  The phone ships to you with a ton of widgets on all of your home screens-after experimenting with removing and changing some settings on them, my battery life improved dramatically.  I removed the social networking widgets, music widget, one of the news feeds, and the photo slideshow widget.  I installed the facebook app and (this is Important) changed it's refresh rate to 2 hours instead of 30 minutes.  The facebook widget is a battery drain but if you set it to refresh longer it will help a lot.  The phone also ships with a "droid hinter" on your original home page; once your familiar with how to use the phone, get rid of it.

2. Your phone may be having a problem receiving a signal.  If you are at work, etc. take notice of your signal throughout the day.  If at some points it has no signal, the signal in that area may be weak and thus be draining your battery as it searches continually for a signal.

3.  I lowered other settings such as email to check every hour instead of every 15 minutes.  When you open email, it automatically checks for new messages anyway; why waste the battery checking emails every 15 minutes when the phone is idle?

Just a couple of suggestions but I found that reducing widgets on home screens and/or reducing refresh rates on such widgets dramatically improved my battery.

To dannyro:

Thank you for your reply to the battery issue post.

I do not use facebook, social networking widgets, one of the news feeds, or the photo slideshow widget. However, I am not very tech savvy - this is my first smart phone - and I despite receiving advice from some very kind and knowledgable people, I still do not know how to remove these widgets or to stop them from always running.

I did install Advanced Task Killer (I think that is what it was called by childress or something like that? - I do not have the phone with me now to check), but I could not figure out how to use it properly. Although I thought I had instructed the task killer to kill various widgets, the same widgets would appear up and running again within hours, sometimes within minutes.

Can you please tell me the details of how to remove the widgets that you removed? The more details (however simple and elementary), the more helpful.

Thanks for any help.

I had the same problem with the battery draining within a few hours.

My battery profile is default "smart mode". As stated above there are ways to tweak these for better performance but what made a drastic change for me was the following:

Open Advance Task Killer and click menu button to access settings.

Go to "Auto Kill level" and set for "Crazy".

Go to "Auto Kill Frequency" and set for "when screen off"

Then turn screen off whenever it's not being used.

After using phone I kill all apps that are running

I can go all day without charging and I spend a lot of time on phone.

There is a Help section on using advance task killer.Open the program, then open the menu and you will see help tab

To remove widgets, go to the widget you want remove and firmly press on it until it starts to shake (keep holding), a trash can appears on the screen in the bottom.  Just drag to icon to the trash can (the trash can will turn red when it's in the trash can) and release.  This removes the widgets from your screen.

Also one thing I found is the first full day I had mine (after charging all night), my battery only lasted 4 hours.  It drained all the way to the red notice on the battery.  That night (and ever since) when I've charged it, the charge lasts the whole day. I've heard you need to let the battery drain all the way down and then recharge and the batter life improves greatly.  Removing the widgets on your home screen will also greatly improve your battery life.

Just a few ideas ....

All this discussion about lousy battery life really is turning me off to the DROID X   ....  I have an LG DARE right now and only have to charge it about every 3 days.  I had planned to upgrade to the DROID X after seeing the HTC DROID.

I wonder if Verizon is doing ANYTHING to address this issue?

Ha, I am in the same position you are except I ordered mine a week ago. I love the Dare simply because of the battery life, and after two years of abuse from me, the battery still holds a charge for a long time. I am worried with this new phone that I will forget to charge it. If mine ever ships I will let you know how the real battery life is.

It's a a great phone once you use a task killer to kill background apps. I go day and a half now. If you are looking for three or more days (I used to get that with my blackberry) forget it. I do not know of any phone like the X or the Incredible that has that kind of battery life and can be used the way it was meant to be used.

Anybody correct me if I am wrong. Now it will happen eventually but all the air time involved is a battery killer.

DO NOT GIVE UP ON THE "X"!  I've had two Blackberries and thought I'd never give up my Tour, but this Droid X is the "bomb". I play with it constantly, trying to find new things and new ways to do old things. It's really exciting, and I love the enthusiasm I have found among other Droid Xers.

Thanks, it worked like a gem. Called Verizon support who could not find the answer.

I had to get a new battery, that was one issue. But still get terrible battery life. I've used smartphones since they began. I found task killer to not only be useless, but it made battery performance worse. Overall a terrible choice of batteries for all this phone is supposed to be able to do. I'm disappointed with the droid x and verizon.

i also think the battery on mine does not seem up to par with some of the early reviews of the DX and other posters stating they get great battery life (and motorola's own specs, which indicate its battery should be better than my previous smartphone--Blackberry Bold 9000--which it isn't)...i'm starting to think it's either my device, or there's some setting(s) that are causing my battery drain issues.

with the standard battery, i was losing 10-15% of the battery life every hour with "normal usage" (typical day: less than 1 hr internet browsing, 10-20 mins market browsing, 2-3 market downloads, 1 hr streaming music, maybe 2 txts, 1 email, 5-10 mins on facebook....the rest of the time the screen is dark and it's sitting idle) and pretty reasonable settings (i.e. no gps on, brightness is fairly low & times out at 1-2 mins)... so i went to the Verizon store and they gave me a replacment battery--tho i had to go to a differnet store than the one near my office...the one near me wouldn't hear of it and instead tried to show me apps that were supposed to magically fix my quick drainage issue (they didn't )... unfortuantely, the replacement battery drained at the same rate.

i just got the extended battery on Tuesday and can't accurately comment on it yet, as i'm still cycling it and monitoring its drainage...tho from what i've seen, it's at least an improvement (maybe losing 7-10% every hour now?)...

i'll try to update this post at a later date once i've put the extended battery through its paces a little more, or if i figure out something else that bumps up my battery life significantly.

There is a great discussion thread on this, and some suggested Culprit, over here:

It's a long thread, but definitely worth the read.

You should also get advanced task killer. Kill those background apps, especially those that are constantly hitting the air for info. When I did that, I went from half a day to day and a half.

I've had my DX for about 3 weeks now  - just upgraded to the extended battery.  it seems to be giving me a longer "shelf life" than the original battery.  I've been getting a full day, to a day and a 1/2 with the extended battery.  It is not obtrusive either, being just a hair bigger than the original battery.  i actually had to make  note on the door/cover because they look so similar.  It also doesn't add much, if any, weight to the phone.

My widgets have now been pared down, I sign into FB and twitter manually when i want to check in, so they are not running.  I've removed some of the widgets spoken of in the earlier page of this thread.

I've DL Advanced Task Killer, but not being techno, i am nervous about what to kill and what to leave.  I know it sounds odd to people who are more aware of what is what, but it can be daunting.

If i allow the Task Killer to just "kill at random" are there repercussions on the service the phone provides?  My thinking is that there are some aps running in the background for a reason?

thanks for answering this basic of all questions....

Make sure your GPS for navigation is off when not using. It is located under settings > locations. It will suck the battery dry fairly quickly if on.

GPS and Wifi will drain your battery fairly quickly.  I was using my wifi last night and observed my battery status drop 20% in 30 minutes with wifi enabled.
