Accidental hang ups and pressing buttons with my face while on a call

I would say on 80% of my calls, the screen unlocks even when the phone is still next to my face - I am accidentally hanging up on a LOT of people. If I am lucky enough to NOT accidentally press the "call end" button, my cheek end ups pressing numbers or the mute button without realizing what's happened.

I can't live like this! I am actually starting to avoid using the droid for phone calls!

please help.

I have to tell you that I feel the same way. I am being ridiculed by my friends and husband because my phone can do all these amazing things, yet very rarely can I complete a phone conversation. I have been talking up my Droid to everyone because I thought that after the update it would get better. It hasn't. The same thing always happens. I am in the middle of a call and all of a sudden I feel a small vibration and the person on the other end of the phone can't hear me. I can hear them perfectly, but they can't hear me. I have turned off the privacy feature and done everything that has been suggested. It still doesn't work. This is my second Droid. I returned the first because of the same problem. I was hoping that I got a bad handset, but now feel that it is something more. I am just about ready to call it quits even though I love all the other things about this phone. This is a problem that is unacceptable. I have to be able to have conversations, or else the phone won't work for me.

I am truly bummed out by this!

I assume since you didn't mention the Eris specifically, that we are talking about the Motorola Droid.

It sounds like a proximity sensor problem or failure.  Do you have a screen protector on the phone?  If so, it's possible it could be interfering with the sensor.  Try making a call and holding the phone in one hand while slowly moving your other hand over the upper  left right portion of the screen.  You'll need to be close to the screen but not touching it about quarter to a half inch works on my phone.  If the screen never blanks, then there is either something wrong with the sensor or it is being blocked by something.

The Droid is supposed to turn of the screen once the phone is put up to your face for the exact reason that you are posting.  To keep you from accidentally dialing, muting, etc.

EDIT: When I said "upper left corner of the screen" I meant the "other left" or what most people consider the "upper right corner".

Yes, it is a Mototola Droid. I have no screen protector. When it happened on my first phone I thought it was a sensor issue. But now I am wondering. I find it hard to believe that I could get two phones with the same flaw.

Thanks for your help!

Did you try the little test to check the sensor?  Did it work?

It's definitely possible that you could have gotten another one with a bad sensor.  I'm sure that your first one was not the only one with that defect.  However, I wouldn't go into any casinos any time soon with that kind of luck. lol

I did try the test and the phone responded appropriately. The screen blsnked out when my finger was over, or near, the sensor. When I moved my finger away, the screen came back.

I hate the idea of returning my Droid again. There is nothing else that I really want out there. However, not being able to complete phone calls is a real problem for me. Again, this is my 2nd Droid and I am concerned about switching it for a new one.

Thanks!

Could it be a app you installed that set up to not turn the screen off?  I had a app I didnt pay attention that did that and left my screen on for an hour before I realized it.

Otherwise not sure.  I havnt had a hang up yet.

This happens to me too - frustrating - I thought it was just me. Another thing that has happened to me is, after I hang up the phone with someone, a few seconds later my phone may randomly dial a number in the recent call log. So far it has accidentally dialed 2-3 people.

Has anyone found a solution to these issues?

Download an free app called "Not Call Log" in the market.  You can set it to automatically take you back to the Home screen after you hang up.

I am sorry that other people are experiencing the hang up problem like myself. As I said before, I am already on my second Droid. I replaced my first one for the same problem. Not being able to complete phone calls is a deal breaker for me. I hate to switch phones but I feel I have no choice.

Here is the question for you all- what phone should i now get? Shoukd I go with the Eris? How abour Omnia II? This is making me cringe. I really love my Droid. I have to have a phone that works, though.

ksxox10-

One thing that has helped me not to accidentally dial numbers when I'm on the phone, is to make a conscious effort not to have my face touch the bottom part of the screen when I'm on a call. If you notice, there are buttons at the bottom which if you accidentally press will start doing the funky things. They are 'Add Call', 'End' and 'Dial Pad'. If you hold the bottom part of your phone (where you talk into not where you listen) out slightly it helps in not touching these.

I don't know if that helps at all Smiley Happy I didn't want to trade my phone in so I've done that and so far it has worked.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried to be careful of the bottom buttons, because I do feel they have something to do with it. When it has happened to you, do you feel a "thud" for lack of a better word? I hear and feel this thud noise/vibration and then the person on the other end can no longer hear me.

Yes I know what you mean by the "thud", the slight vibration. I think when this happens it is because the bottom left or right button has been pressed and then consecutive number buttons. So, I think the vibration happens everytime a number is pressed on the keypad. Hope that helps!

Two suggestions here.

1.  I think the "proximity sensor" pretty much works by bouncing an IR signal out and back to the phone.  If you have long hair, any chance the hair is absorbing the light and preventing the sensor from working?  Are you cradling the phone in your neck so that the top of the phone is sticking out "past your head" so the light isn't being reflected at all?

2.  If it is some sort of software glitch, a work-around in the mean time would be to press the home screen button, so that the dialer is put "in the background" and you can't accidentally hit the hangup button.

A third thought here...  press the power button to shut the screen down.  It will not disconnect the call, and when you pull it back from your face the screen will turn back on.

Good morning ,

Just thought I would follow up on this thread. I returned my Droid for a new one. I have had the new Droid now for 4 days and have had no accidental hang ups with this new phone. This is my third Droid, but it is working beautifully so far. I hope I haven't just jinxed it!

You're lucky. What's the manufacturing date code printed on the sticker under the battery? It should be something like "41/09". That's the week and year it was made. My first Droid had this problem, it was manufactured "39/09". I returned it and got one made "47/09", and it also has the problem. Like everyone else, I really like the phone, but must have this problem fixed.

When you get a phone call/after you pick up a phone call, just press the home button that brings you back to the homescreen/walls. I try to keep one of the three walls (relatively) empty so I slide over to that when I talk, and pretty soon the phone locks and there's no problems. Even if it unlocks, you're still on the empty wall :smileyhappy:

The only con to this is you have to slide down the notification bar and click on the current call and press the end call, but it's better than accidentally hanging up!
