It's finally here Folks. Verizon will be releasing 2.1 update for droid this thursday.
http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-droids-android-21-update-be-rolled-out-starting-thursday
Of course the Moto Droid would get upgraded first... oh well, i would hope this means the Eris will be no more than 1-2 more weeks after like the other updates.
Wow, it says it will be rolled out in batches of 250,000. Makes me wonder just how many droids there are out there. Would the second batch have to wait till all 250,000 of the first batch downloaded the update? How does this work exactly?
Does anyone know if 2.1 for Eris will allow you to use the bluetooth headset for voice activated dialing?
2.1 might or might not fix this issue. We simply still don't know till we get the actual release.
What are the "issues" and what is this "upgrade"? Clueless....in Fla.
as far as i know the 2.1 OTA will be quite lack-luster considering theres no flash, no new launcher, and no improved bluetooth the whole point of 2.1 was to be a "FEATURE" release not a bug patch ya live wallpapers, big whoop already got that and its most likely faster than the one in this update boo on VZW and boo on Moto for turning a potentially awesome update into what is essentially a gimmick patch.
According to this, the update has been delayed again. They found a bug in it last night.

Right, and..........
The check's in the mail, and.......
{please keep your posts courteous}
I'm a current Verizon customer and currently shopping for my next SmartPhone. It was going to be a Droid (Moto or Eris).
Anyone who does even a little homework quickly finds a trail of unkept promises on service upgrades, etc. Those who argue that we are being impatient or picky are apologists. Sure... customers are impatient and greedy, but Verizon is clearly exploiting those expectations with bait-and-delay false promises.
Sure, I could buy an Eris and root it. I shouldn't have to.
Right now, the only thing keeping me a Verizon customer is the fact that I'm not sure any other carriers business practices are any better.
I do know that today I'm at least a half step closer to being an AT&T subscriber with an iPhone. That way I can get the iPad with the 3G connection along with the WiFi, I guess.
jab word of advise, dont go AT&T unless you live in a bigger city area. I lived in Cedar rapids, IA, a bigish area and had issues with it even in the middle of the #G area. Verizon really does have a bigger #G area and it is ALOT more reliable. Once I changed from IPhone to Droid it took getting comfortable with it but I found that you can do so much more with a Droid, even without the update. Trust me dont go IPhone, you are asking for more control over what your phone can do than with the Verizon Droid.

It sounds like you're awfully paranoid about Verizon's practices. There's nothing about 2.1 on the Droid that's drastic that should get you to want to leave VZW. The Eris's update I believe can be found at HTC's website.
Aside from that, the people who argue against those who are barking for an update aren't apologists. We just know how this works already and wish you did too.
First- apologies to anyone who found the '****' post offensive. Old joke.....
Second- I have heard references to the Eris 'update' that is already available. I'm no techie, and I may have the definitions wrong, but I believe the update that is posted on the HTC for the Eris (vs. 2.*.*) is NOT an Android update. I believe it is an update of some other phone functionality (it is explained in fine print on the website). I don't think people would be rooting their phones and loading an OS upgrade leaked from China if the download was on the HTC site. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this....... it sure would be a simple fix.
Third- thanks for the warning on the AT&T coverage. This is definitely a region-dependent issue. The phone only needs to work where I use the phone. I'm looking into the quality of local coverage for other carriers.
Fourth- As to the importance of the 2.1 upgrade, I hear conflicting reports. I accept that 'latest' does not necessarily mean 'greatest', and maybe 1.5 is fine. Maybe all the people raving on other sites about the benefits of 2.1 on their Eris are just uber-geeks who like overclocking their phones and tweaking their software just for the technical satisfaction. It is hard for a noob like me to know because I can't walk into my local Verizon store and try the phone (I've tried). I can only look at a 'dead' phone with a plastic graphic sheet attached to the screen. I was able to try the Moto-Droid. Personally, I dislike 'sliders' in general, and particularly the Moto keyboard.
Fifth- it's not paranoid if people are really out to get you (another old joke). The lead on the post is "Androd 2.1 for droid will be released this Thursday". It's Friday. No update. There have been similar announcements repeatedly over the past year. I'm not looking to slam Verizon. Just making the observations as a critical consumer. The two obvious conclusions are that Verizon has been UNABLE to deliver the upgrade, or they are UNWILLING to deliver the upgrade. The former seems unlikely. The latter is perfectly reasonable. There is nothing new about 'planned obsolescence' in a rapidly evolving technical field. There may be other explanations for someone more 'in the know'.
For now, my Blackberry is working just fine (I am NOT a paid troller), so I am in no hurry to do anything

Actually you can protect yourself with certainty against "planned obsolescence" on both the Moto Droid and the Droid Eris, but if you are complaining about not receiving the 2.1 update, then you have not taken the necessary steps to guarantee yourself that your phone will not become obsolete in the foreseeable future.
Android is Open Source software. (No, the Google apps and some of the other software included is not, but the base OS and the majority of what is included in the Motorola Droid is.) As such, you and/or developers who you may want to rely on, will always have access to the source code for the latest releases of the Android operating system. (Yes, often there is a 1 or 2 week "delay" between release of a new device with the newest build and the release of the "official" source code, but it comes out shortly after release - it *must*, by law.)
Nobody can force your device to become obsolete, unless you allow them to, either by your action, or non-action. If you allow youserlf to depend only on an "official release" you are assured of support, both technical and warranty, and *probably* a stable phone. (Not that the other option is necessarily any less stable.) This is obviously the right choice for the majority of users. The price you pay for this is that you are at the mercy of the carrier and the device manufacturer. If you wish to be kept "safe and secure" you choose this route. Once chosen, (an "official update") you may or may not have the option of "changing your mind" later to go down the other road.

Verizon has a very long "test cycle" before releasing devices or updates. As long as they take the releases should be flawless, but they never are. They do seem to be reducing this cycle with Android and that's good. They must be quicker to market to stay competetive.
Verizon's service and coverage are second to none, over all. I support a mixture of devices and carriers for my employeer and the only reason for using another carrier is if Verizon's signal in your primary area is weak.
As for the downloads from HTC: the only downloads they offer are the user manual and verson 2.0 sych software for your PC. Verizon has a page with instructions for a "manditory" update for the Eris (http://support.vzw.com/how_to_use/droid_eris_upgrade.html). This update should happen soon.
The link to the update you posted was for the previous update they did for the lockscreen problem...has nothing to do with 2.1.
They never took it off the the Verizon support page for the Eris.
I am frustrated as many of you are but I think I would rather let it cook as much as it needs to make sure it is ready. Not much point of pushing out an OTA update if it's just going to cause more problems and bugs. I'm sure the upgrade won't be flawless but I think they want to get it as "right" as they can the first time.
If they did push it out before they should then we would be complaining about what a buggy piece of [edit] 2.1 is. We are a fickle bunch aren't we?

How can you seriously consider the latter to be reasonable when they are a company with a phone that has sold over one million units? Go on their FB page, people just want 2.1 left and right. They know we want it, and it'd be considerably wrong of them to put out information stating information about 2.1 and then only to take it away. C'mon, why go through all the trouble? If they found a bug, then they found a bug. For now, my Blackberry is working just fine (I am NOT a paid troller), so I am in no hurry to do anything

If you call this trolling m'boy then you've got a long way to go.
Hey, I agree with you on the broken promises. I am not trying to bash verizon in any major way or anything, but what i had happen to me and seems to keep happening and i wish it would get corrected or stopped. Basically i went with the eris instead of the moto droid because in december when i switched to verizon, the sales person (spokesperson) for verizon talked me into the eris because he said that other then the obvious features (keyboard and size and brand) the moto and droid eris were about the same. He told me that the eris had 1.5 firmware or software ( whichever, im new to this and not sure but the thing thats to be updated), he told me that not to worry, in a month my eris would be updated so i could have turn by turn gps and more and my phone will basically be like the moto droid. I got it In decemeber of 2009, he promised me up and down that he was for sure that the update would be rolled out on jan 22nd and it would be either 2.0 or 2.1 and i would have a better phone basically with the gps turn by turn. I am traveling alot now and at the time wasnt, but told him i needed something that after february would have gps, so he assured me again up and down that the eris will get the update on jan 22nd, that it may get it a day after that maybe even 2 days, but thats when it will be uploaded. He said he got it from the verizon site and htc site. This never happened, obviously. I am mildly happy with the eris on some parts, i like some things, but dont like others, still no update for the eris, and it doesnt seem like there ever will be. Was supposed to be in Q1, but the Q1 is coming to a close. Ive asked verizon if because of the misleading promises and information from the spokesperson that signed me up, if i could turn my phone in for the moto droid so i can get the gps turn by turn which i was guarenteed and promised, understanding that i would have to pay a little more at the "sale price" or whichever you call it, just not at full price. They wont let me. i live in des moines iowa, we dont have but at t and verizon and us cellular, the att and us cell dont have the best reception so i stay with verizon. However I am happy with verizons customer service if i have other questions for the most part besides a few bad apples, but i just feel that because a spokesperson for verizon guarenteed me my phone would have this update around jan 22nd, that they should let me switch to the phone i need and pay the extra 80$ or whatever it was, not full price, since it was a verizon employees mixup. Also it was past the initial 30 day change deal that i couldnt switch phones either or i wouuld have. I hope you moto people get your update soon, and i hope eventually i will get mine, even though it was proimsed to me months ago. I will stay with verizon at least till my contract ends, but probably longer if they will right their wrong, even if the employee did something wrong, i went off what he said for my needs.
THank you, and i tried to be nice in this post, verizon has been nice to me otherwise except on this.
One possibility is to put the 'Leaked 2.1' on your device. Turn by turn directions work very well.
Just want to add my .02 cents. People pay thousands of dollars a year to a company that leaves it's costumers in the dark. Their primary answer to virtually any question is "I don't know." While the coverage is good, the customer service may be lacking in this area. Verizon doesn't keep their costumers informed, and I can see why some may be upset.
I hope the android 2.1 update comes out quickly so everyone can move on and enjoy what they have (or focus their attention on Adobe Flash )
shhneusa wrote: One possibility is to put the 'Leaked 2.1' on your device. Turn by turn directions work very well.
If your phone quits working after using the rom your phone wont be replaced and i have not found the 2.0.1 version of android so there is no way to put the phone back to normal
Do *not* put the "leaked" 2.1 on your Eris.
If you want to void your warranty (I'm not saying *not* to do *that*) you certainly do not want to put the "leaked" 2.1 on your Eris. Devs have not found a way to return your phone back to stock, nor does anyone know if the leaked version can be upgraded to the "real" 2.1 version when it comes out, in addition, the 2.1 leak can not (yet) be rooted like the 1.5 factory ROM can.
There are *much* safer and long-term savvy ways of getting 2.1 on your eris, should you really want to do so, but *not* by applying the leaked 2.1 ROM.
You have the same story as me, EXACTLY....i need the turn by turn for when i travel, but preferred a slimline phone, didn't like the flat keyboard on the moto droid so ended up with the ERIS and the promise of an upgrade by the end of Jan. well like it has been said time and time again...look at this last week of march and no upgrade yet, so it looks like the Q1 promise is also going to fall short.
im with you, like the coverage, the phone is ok, but it is the deceptive practices of the stores that is really bothersome.
