Of course the Moto Droid would get upgraded first... oh well, i would hope this means the Eris will be no more than 1-2 more weeks after like the other updates.

Wow, it says it will be rolled out in batches of 250,000. Makes me wonder just how many droids there are out there. Would the second batch have to wait till all 250,000 of the first batch downloaded the update? How does this work exactly?

Does anyone know if 2.1 for Eris will allow you to use the bluetooth headset for voice activated dialing?

2.1 might or might not fix this issue. We simply still don't know till we get the actual release.

as far as i know the 2.1 OTA will be quite lack-luster considering theres no flash, no new launcher, and no improved bluetooth the whole point of 2.1 was to be a "FEATURE" release not a bug patch ya live wallpapers, big whoop already got that and its most likely faster than the one in this update boo on VZW and boo on Moto for turning a potentially awesome update into what is essentially a gimmick patch.

Not a Moto Droid user, but generally "point number" releases (2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc...) are bugfix releases and "whole number" releases (2.0, 3.0, 4.0) are the major feature release. Droid users are already running 2.0, so there probably won't be a quantum leap when the OTA hits your phone...
For us Eris users running 1.5, when we get 2.1, we will be getting a bigger leap forward getting what you already have had from 2.0 and the patches and improvements that 2.1 adds to it.

So, JayJay1122, what feature updates will Eris users see in this update? Do you know?

You will get a notification message that the update is ready to be installed on your phone. Once the distribution starts, it may also be available for manual download and install from various Android related sites.

More on timing and numbers - > http://www.androidcentral.com/latest-motorola-droid-android-21-update
- The first batch of 1,000 updates will be pushed out at 9 a.m. PDT.
- Assuming all goes well, another 9,000 updates will go out at 8:59 p.m. PDT.
- After that, there's a 24-hour waiting period (to make sure all's still well.)
- Then 200,000 updates will go out on Saturday, March 20.
- Another batch of 200,000 goes out after that, until everyone has the update

According to this, the update has been delayed again. They found a bug in it last night.

Right, and..........
The check's in the mail, and.......
{please keep your posts courteous}
I'm a current Verizon customer and currently shopping for my next SmartPhone. It was going to be a Droid (Moto or Eris).
Anyone who does even a little homework quickly finds a trail of unkept promises on service upgrades, etc. Those who argue that we are being impatient or picky are apologists. Sure... customers are impatient and greedy, but Verizon is clearly exploiting those expectations with bait-and-delay false promises.
Sure, I could buy an Eris and root it. I shouldn't have to.
Right now, the only thing keeping me a Verizon customer is the fact that I'm not sure any other carriers business practices are any better.
I do know that today I'm at least a half step closer to being an AT&T subscriber with an iPhone. That way I can get the iPad with the 3G connection along with the WiFi, I guess.

jab word of advise, dont go AT&T unless you live in a bigger city area. I lived in Cedar rapids, IA, a bigish area and had issues with it even in the middle of the #G area. Verizon really does have a bigger #G area and it is ALOT more reliable. Once I changed from IPhone to Droid it took getting comfortable with it but I found that you can do so much more with a Droid, even without the update. Trust me dont go IPhone, you are asking for more control over what your phone can do than with the Verizon Droid.

It sounds like you're awfully paranoid about Verizon's practices. There's nothing about 2.1 on the Droid that's drastic that should get you to want to leave VZW. The Eris's update I believe can be found at HTC's website.
Aside from that, the people who argue against those who are barking for an update aren't apologists. We just know how this works already and wish you did too.

First- apologies to anyone who found the '****' post offensive. Old joke.....
Second- I have heard references to the Eris 'update' that is already available. I'm no techie, and I may have the definitions wrong, but I believe the update that is posted on the HTC for the Eris (vs. 2.*.*) is NOT an Android update. I believe it is an update of some other phone functionality (it is explained in fine print on the website). I don't think people would be rooting their phones and loading an OS upgrade leaked from China if the download was on the HTC site. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this....... it sure would be a simple fix.
Third- thanks for the warning on the AT&T coverage. This is definitely a region-dependent issue. The phone only needs to work where I use the phone. I'm looking into the quality of local coverage for other carriers.
Fourth- As to the importance of the 2.1 upgrade, I hear conflicting reports. I accept that 'latest' does not necessarily mean 'greatest', and maybe 1.5 is fine. Maybe all the people raving on other sites about the benefits of 2.1 on their Eris are just uber-geeks who like overclocking their phones and tweaking their software just for the technical satisfaction. It is hard for a noob like me to know because I can't walk into my local Verizon store and try the phone (I've tried). I can only look at a 'dead' phone with a plastic graphic sheet attached to the screen. I was able to try the Moto-Droid. Personally, I dislike 'sliders' in general, and particularly the Moto keyboard.
Fifth- it's not paranoid if people are really out to get you (another old joke). The lead on the post is "Androd 2.1 for droid will be released this Thursday". It's Friday. No update. There have been similar announcements repeatedly over the past year. I'm not looking to slam Verizon. Just making the observations as a critical consumer. The two obvious conclusions are that Verizon has been UNABLE to deliver the upgrade, or they are UNWILLING to deliver the upgrade. The former seems unlikely. The latter is perfectly reasonable. There is nothing new about 'planned obsolescence' in a rapidly evolving technical field. There may be other explanations for someone more 'in the know'.
For now, my Blackberry is working just fine (I am NOT a paid troller), so I am in no hurry to do anything

Actually you can protect yourself with certainty against "planned obsolescence" on both the Moto Droid and the Droid Eris, but if you are complaining about not receiving the 2.1 update, then you have not taken the necessary steps to guarantee yourself that your phone will not become obsolete in the foreseeable future.
Android is Open Source software. (No, the Google apps and some of the other software included is not, but the base OS and the majority of what is included in the Motorola Droid is.) As such, you and/or developers who you may want to rely on, will always have access to the source code for the latest releases of the Android operating system. (Yes, often there is a 1 or 2 week "delay" between release of a new device with the newest build and the release of the "official" source code, but it comes out shortly after release - it *must*, by law.)
Nobody can force your device to become obsolete, unless you allow them to, either by your action, or non-action. If you allow youserlf to depend only on an "official release" you are assured of support, both technical and warranty, and *probably* a stable phone. (Not that the other option is necessarily any less stable.) This is obviously the right choice for the majority of users. The price you pay for this is that you are at the mercy of the carrier and the device manufacturer. If you wish to be kept "safe and secure" you choose this route. Once chosen, (an "official update") you may or may not have the option of "changing your mind" later to go down the other road.
