September 5th and it is still not here. Early September... dont make me laugh.
When will it actually come out ota
This has been responded to over a 1000 times, please read before deplicating post.... The originsl projected date give them to September 22, but this is just a projected date and they are obligated to release before or on this date..
Early September could mean any date between 09/01-09/15. Being that it is now 9/5 doesn't dismiss the Early time frame.
"Early September" has neber actually been stated by an official source. Verizon Wireless has made statements stating late summer. Motorola states late summer.
Here are a couple of these sources:
http://news.vzw.com/news/2010/06/pr2010-06-22.html
https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades?view=overview
Some people in some of the various forums started saying "early September"...but that is not an official source.
Regardless of when it is...we will get it when it is ready to be given to us. There is no indication at this time that we will not get it in the time frame that was stated from the very announcment and launch of this phone. We need to let them make sure that the update we will be given is as bug-free as possible and that it will fix as many issues as possible. Have some patience.
Well this is where patience has gotten us.
When I got my phone, I asked the sales person if the FroYo update was on track. I was assured August 2010 was a firm release date and that the "Flag Ship" phone would be first upgraded.
Then that date because Summer 2010
Then it became Late Summer
All those time periods where shown right on the Droid Does website.
Now there is no date at all because they can't decide what the next lie will be.
All I would like is a straight answer from Verizon as to why we don't have the update. Or why they can't roll it out as a few different updates. Send us the Java Compiler and Flash Support now. Send us teh MS Exchange for email when they fix it (which is the rumor that is holding up this update).
Personally I have no use for MS Exchange. I have a GMail address and a Hotmail address and they serve me just fine. In the five years that I have had DSL, I have never once used my ISP's provided email accounts.
The only other Verizon Droid phone to not have 2.2 is LG Ally. A phone so unworthy that they would not call it the LG Droid Ally. Do we, as X owners, want to be lumped with this phone? A phone that verizon gives away for 49.99 with two year contract.
Who CARES?
You will get it when they push it to your phone.
The company doesn't owe you anything by any time frame. It's all estimates. Have you ever had a job where you project something in the future? Does it ever line up 100% correctly?
{please keep your posts courteous}
SHAC yes I do.
I am an inspector for a steel company.
I have to ensure the quality of the goods and keep the process on schedule to ensure the customer gets their order.
If we miss our target dates, then the customer can pull their order and we lose the money and we are stuck with the inventory.
So yes, I know something about keeping my word.
As to whining. I don't see it that way. Verizon should be reading these boards because they are seething with displeasure.
I am sure I will get kicked in the teeth for saying this again, but, with the exception of the camera, the guts in a Droid 2 are no different than the guts in a X. Why does this phone have 2.2 and X does not.
Actually, If you complain about the delay enough, they can get you one overnight...they just did for me
Let me throw my thoughts into the mix regarding release dates for software versus some other product, say a small wooden table.
When the manufacturer of this small wooden table has the wood, screws, glue, etc. in hand, he can determine with almost exact certainty when he can have a finished table ready for delivery. He can do this because he knows how long it will take his employees to cut the wood to the correct size pieces and how long it takes to assemble the table and then how long it takes the glue to "set". You get the picture. This is to say,for example, if has has all the parts on Monday, he knows he can have X number of tables ready for delivery on Friday.
Now lets look at software and trying to determine exact release dates. Google has (I'm picking a number out of thin air here) say 15 people working on the 2.2 update for our "X"s. How do you think Google could say on July 15th (with exact certainty) when 2.2 would be ready to send to our phones? They write the code, debug it, test it, and when they think they have it correct, send it to Motorola and/or Verizon for them to test. How long do you figure this step takes? 2... 3 weeks? Ok they find a couple problems and send it back. Your 15 people work on it correcting the problems. Keep in mind you had no idea how many problems Motorola/Verizon were going to find, or how difficult they would be to fix. (this takes 2-4 weeks.... a variable, no exact answer) Anyway, you fix them. Back to Motorola/Verizon again. During this time, your team just happens to find another "bug". And so on, and so on, and so on. You see all the variables right? So how do you determine an exact release date for the software? The answer is "You can't" So the release date stated is "3rd quarter" or "Late summer" or "September". That's the best they can do.
Now, I have no idea if my scenario is exactly how it works or not, I'm not a software person. I work with lasers. But I thought I'd throw it out there for you to think about.
I remember when I was little and wanted something and of course wanted it "Now!" My mother many times told me, "Patience, little one, patience."

Did you even look at the information available within the two links I previously posted?
That information was freely available from the very beginning since the announcment of the Droid X. Nothing has changed since then. It has ALWAYS been late summer...it was never some other date that migrated to that.
taskellusaf wrote:yeah I'm sure verizon advertised this... Nope all they said was the update is coming soon
They did right in their public press release. http://news.vzw.com/news/2010/06/pr2010-06-22.html
"DROID X customers will also receive Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 with an over-the-air update in the latter half of the summer."
Took 2 seconds to find with Google and like I said it was repeated in many tech blogs including Engadget and of the like.....
Actually it was announced on the same day that the Droid X was announced officially by Verizon on June 23.
Here is the printed version of the announcement : http://news.vzw.com/news/2010/06/pr2010-06-22.html
This was available......freely.
Furthermore, if you looked at the information that is available from Motorola on their products, you can see that they have the same timeframe stated : https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/manager/softwareupgrades?view=overview
The official source of information is going to be from Motorola or Verizon.
I would NEVER expect a firmware update to be a remedy for a phone that randomly reboots. Not to say that a firmware update wouldn't fix that problem, I don't know. But I'd have taken it back for an exchange when that started (which would suck because of the big shortage issues with the Droid X).
I'm kinda curious, in the first post, you make a case for not having the update because of Exchange, then you say you have no use for it? Say what??
I guess if expecting an update on a phone wrecks yer day, then this is the place to express it.
The worry I have is that the 2.2 update won't solve the low ringer volume issue. I have read, but can't confirm that there might be a second update directly from Motorola for a remedy. but if not, then what? I'm able to live with it as it is, but it would be nice if it rang louder. I got one of the very first ones available and I understand that the subsequent phones had louder ring volume. So what can I do?
Makes one go "Hmmm..."
Geri O
My Droid X only rebooted once while using Tasker and unexpectedly quit Google Navigation twice while driving. Other than that it has been working flawlessly for me. Ringer isn't as loud as my old BB Curve but I rarely keep it far away from me.
Can't wait until Otterbox finishes their defender case for it.
I also highly recommend K9mail if you need an email client that is more advanced than the stock. I have 10 folders spread across a Gmail and Google Apps account that receive email instantly due to IMAP IDLE support. I almost always get the notifications first on my phone even though my desktop notifier checks every 15 seconds.
I am excited for the speed boost 2.2 will offer along with the better voice search features.
I'm just annoyed that the devices that people bought with out expecting to have Froyo i.e. Droid users got their update before us who bought our Droid X with the expectation of having Froyo. Then to add insult to injury they release another hand set that came preloaded with Froyo and it was like it was an HTC hand set and they could blame the delay on say Sense UI being easy to port the upgrade to, no the release it on another Motorola hand set! Not to mention that the HTC hand set now also has it before us! I personally am **bleep** off because I upgraded from Droid to Incredible and then these SOB's talked me into the X based on Froyo and gave it to my old devices first! I'm offended by this and highly unhappy with Verizon.

Perhaps you should have done your homework before you chose the Droid X.
It was a well known fact - before the Droid X actually was even sold - that the update would not be given until late summer. It was also a known fact that the Droid 2 would have the 2.2 system on it. No one insulted me, and I was not injured. I knew these things before I bought my Droid X on July 15.
This topic is really being driven to death, I was wondering a few things for those that are complaining....
1. HAVE YOU NOT REALIZE THIS IS A PHONE?????
2. Whats this infatuation with more power from a device but then complain about battery life?
3. Those that complain about a device rebooting, have you gave thought that one of the possible hundreds of apps installed may be causing your issue (Don't be so quick to blame the device)
4. Like said before (DROID, DROID 2 and DROID X ARE NOT THE SAME DEVICE) why do so many place them in the same category when dealing with the Froyo update, there is differences also do not forget that the Droid X was the first device to be stocked with the revised MotoBlur, so this can cause a major programming coding issue there, Droid 2 may have looked like it had same version of MotoBlur but what should be clear that Droid 2 was built around 2.2 revised codes, so they are not the same version codes to start off with, where our device was built around 2.1 and everything has to be totally revised to guarantee compatibility.
5. Most important...... If you think coding and debugging is so simple, why not move Verizon and Motorola aside and show them how its done, I would love to see when we would see the update then..... IF AT ALL.
Actualkly you should be ********* off at yourself for not doing your research. If you had done your research, you would have known that the X upgrade to Froyo would have been late summer. Fall doesn't start until September 23rd, so if they are delayed past that, then they will be late. Personally, I never listen to what a salesman says. I do my own research on the web before I decide on anything. The X is the first device that I did not put on hands on it first, but when I found the specs online, I actually cut out a piece of paper to see how much bigger the device was compared to my env touch, and would it fit into my shirt pocket. Then is when I decided to get the X, and I knew that Froyo would not come out until late summer, because that is when Motorola said it would come out in the initlal announcement a month before it was available.
Also, when you upgraded from Droid to Incredible, then X, you got better hardware each time (Incredible has a better processor/screen than the Original Droid, X has a bigger screen than the Incredible.) But I guess bigger/better/faster hardware doesn't mean a thing to you. Just because other devices have upgraded to Froyo first, doesn't mean anything other than the manufacturer was able to get everything working and tested out before Motorola could get it tested out for the X.
Froyo for X will come out when Motorola and Verizon are satisfied that they have good code to push out. When the code is golden, we will get it. You will be happy.
taskellusaf wrote:well I'm no internet junkie first of all... And allow me to clarify... my verizon rep told me soon.. The guy on the phone also said soon.. And yes I have some bugs... Random reboots... Sorry battery life.... Etc.. Being told the update should fix your problems... So I held on the phone....IT just boggles the mind how I spend all this money and can't get an update... its like getting a raw deal... kinda curious if the people that bought older phones at the time even knew 2.2 would be out...
Soon could mean 1 second later, or after the end of the world. You could fit anything to the word soon and it would be correct or wrong based on the actual release of Froyo for the Droid X.
A lot of older devices are not even updated to 2.1, let alone 2.2. Most of them are stuck at 1.5/1.6. Just be patient and let them do it right. Do you want to end up like the Incredible users crying about how 2.2 botched their devices... What about the Droid owners saying the same thing. At least they are spending more time for the Droid X and it could turn out to be a good thing.
This chatter looks like a bunch of kids on line. If only Verizon/ Motorol would release a statement as to th delay and new expected delivery, they could be alot more helpful to their customers.
scottb8888 wrote: This chatter looks like a bunch of kids on line. If only Verizon/ Motorol would release a statement as to th delay and new expected delivery, they could be alot more helpful to their customers.
There was NO delay.
First....stop listening to rumors.
Second, look at the facts. The planned release has always been late summer....this is from the official sources - Motorola & Verizon.
Would you be happy if they told you the samething everyday until they finished? It's obvious they are not done with it. They said sometime near the end of summer. End of Summer officially is September 21. So honestly I would expect it no later than Mid October.
The Droid X is my first smartphone. I bought it on launch day. It was advertised to have 2.2 "late summer". It was for all intents and purposes marketed as a 2.2 device. Everything I remember seeing in the advertisements mentioned the pending 2.2 update. The X was a flagship phone, the same as the upcoming D2, it was really down to whether you wanted a slider, larger screen, more RAM, HDMI out, etc. Then I started using my phone and I noticed that it had issues, like WIFI constantly disconnecting, a speaker so muted that I couldn't talk on speaker with the phone in the car dock and hear the other person speaking, etc, these problems have been widely reported, no need to rehash it all here. No need to take it back to Verizon, right, many many people have these issues, and the phone is backordered so I can't get a replacement even if a replacement would correct these issues. And I thought, well I really like this phone, if they fix these issues with the update that's just around the corner, before summer is over. And the update will also have flash, the new Java engine, etc. Late summer is an ambiguous term. I'm not a Meteorologist or an Astronomer, I don't keep up with the technical aspects of the earth's yearly travels around the sun. Summer to me is June, July, and August. The kids are out of school in the summer. When college football season starts, and its after Labor Day, it's the beginning of Fall. So obviously now the update has been delayed. The same ambiguity that allows them to push the update out really at any time...they didn't say it would be by late summer of 2010, it could be late summer of 2011 and they wouldn't break any agreements...that same ambiguity allows me as a customer to have expected it by the end of August, when everybody around where I live commonly refer to summer as ended. Now I am past my 30 day return period. I read things on the web that make me question my earlier "it goes without saying that the X is a flagship phone equal to the D2", ill conceived notion. I have to question why the updates have been delayed. It is probable that the hardware of the X has problems. I wish I'd known then what I know now. There aren't dual flagship phones, there's one, and it's called the D2. Not that I wanted the flagship phone for any bragging rights, in a few months even the D2 will be eclipsed, I simply wanted the most bang for my buck and for it to last as long as possible. This episode has left me as an unhappy customer.
Just got off the phone with verizon tech support was given the Tier 3 number for motorola 1-866-721-5480.
Some of these people in this forum acts like either they work for Verizon, or that Verizon is paying their bills. So all of the kissing is pathetic. People just would like to know when they will receive the froyo update, so there is no reason to bash people because of a question. If you really want the update sooner then just google it. but truthfully I havent seen much difference except that you can use the flash player. I havent had a problem with my sound so I really dont notice a difference.
{word filter avoidance}
I agree w/ Bigman & mjtimko (100 %).
I'm trying to stop jumping into these discussions / arguments, but every once in a while, I come across (1) that I just can't help getting into. All of the na sayers out there can say what they want but, I've said this before in other posts & I'll say it again here, this definitely has overtones of the bb storm fiasco.
Also, the na sayers can say what they want about "Verizon or Moto not owing any (1) any kind of communication or updates of what's going on w/ 2.2". The problem I have w/ that statement is, it's amazing (call it rumors given out by verizon store employees or what ever u want to call it) how many people that have been posting here & on other forums, that are from many different States, different areas w/ in those States, & dealt w/ many different verizon stores, in those states were given the same specific dates & timeline by many different verizon store employees, including myself @ time of purchase of the X, of when 2.2 for the X would come out. And yes, I've seen the official documents that others have posted links to on their posts to verizon & moto sites, w/ timeline of the release of 2.2. At this point it's not just a matter of being impatient, wanting the X to do what it was marketed to do, or have all the bells & whistles, but a matter of getting 2.2 & hoping it's going to straighten out most, if not all the bugs that everyone has been dealing w/, w/ out adding more (I'm all for a delay to make sure it works correctly, but). Not to mention (speaking of official documents) this letter that was obviously put on verizon's site, that I just got from a post on the moto forum:
http://a.imageshack.us/img19/272/vzwletter.gif
I know many of us called verizon & moto numerous times (as evident by what's been posted) trying to verify these dates. You would think that w/ all these calls that verizon & moto have been getting, that besides doing the right thing, posting something official on their websites maybe once every wk. or two about where 2.2 stands. They would have @ least posted something to curtail all the so called "rumors" given out by their retail & tech employees.
Therefore, yes I believe they should have some type of communication to their customers. After all, we're only the (1s) that pay their salaries, from the top guy down to the most jr. employee!
Of course I will throw the disclaimer out there, so in this "politically correct" world we live in, I don't offend anyone:
"Only My Opinion"
Well, I just got off the phone with the number cpousn obtained for us.
Spoke to someone named Shenequa (and yes I asked her spell it). All she did was toe the company line. Check your status update function of your handset repeatedly and when the update reaches you it reaches you.
As to a when I got her to go one record and say within the next week. Still not what we want to hear, but it gives us hope the update will be out soon.
I called them as well. They said all they could say was they were working on it and don't know a release date, to keep checking for updates on the phone
{please keep your posts courteous}When we don't get the update in a timely manner people will.be mad... And why is there rumors... Cause verizon won't let anyone know about the x... Late summer is 2 weeks away and they are being tight lipped... How bout a date... When they fail to roll out this month geek I invite you over to the masses

You obviously have no patience. Perhaps you should be searching for facts instead of ranting and raving about someone on a forum.
I want the update as much as most people...I just am not unreasonable about the entire issue. We have already been told when we can expect it...let them do their work and lets see if they provide it. The thing is, even if the time comes and we do not get it because it needs more work to make it as bug-free as possible, I am good with that. And I am expecting that if it does not get released in the timeframe that was already stated that a lot of people will be disappointed - icluding me; but some will be ticked and mad and want to scream and yell about it. To that, I ask what good will it do.
Stop stressing about the update.......enjoy life and your phone for what it is now. I love my phone....and I am excited that it will be better when the update comes. But I want an update that works, not some crap that taskekkusaf wanted rushed out so they did it simply to appease the crying.
We will get it when it comes. Fairly simple. In the meantime...I love my Droid X....even now.
I love my Droid X too. Its light years ahead of my Blackberry Storm 2.
That being said, Motorola needs to understand that they need our support and right now they are worthy of our support by keeping us in the dark. This cloak and dagger nonsense of late summer does not fly. If there is a problem, then they need to openly tell us.
Prior to the Droid 1, Motorola's last market success was the Razr. Since that time, they had not had a market success and they were quickly losing market share to companies like Blackberry, HTC, LG, and the monolith known Apple.
Android brought them back from the brink. Droid 1 was an unprecedented success.
Now, I have the option next July to get a new phone again. The primary account holder can always get a new phone if they extend their contract early. The web already has rumors of what Motorola is cooking up for the future and I am excited, but I won't spend my money on a company that can't get their act together.
If Motorola can not get their act together, then come next July, I will look elsewhere. I will stay with Android, but I might turn my attention to LG, Samsung or HTC.
If Motorola wants to maintain their market share, then what they need to do is give us an update of what works. I have never heard of any issues with the new Java Compiler or Flash 10.1. Get us what works and do a latter update for what does not work now, but will eventually be fixed (i.e. MS Exchange).
I just reread PCW's post.
I missed that image link.
If that message said Droid X was supposed to be the first to have Flash 10.1 support, then riddle me this.
Why the heck are we dead last next to the LG Ally?

As I have tried to point out in other posts that I have made, we should be getting our information from Verizon or Motorola. Those are our official sources of information. When you start to follow any other source you are really opening yourself up for disappointment.

Yeah, i remember seeing that about a month ago, seems like Verizon didn't handle the update the way they anticipated. PCW did good picking that link up and posting it here.
However, All other communications, ads, marketing campaigns plainly and clearly state flash will be available summer 2010 w/ android 2.2. Nor did any of the marketing that I personally saw released give a specific date or that it would be first in the Droid line with those features. I also think that document may not have been released to the public but could be corporate communications and FABs for the reps and stores.

I concur with the general outlook that patience is a virtue and we will be rewarded greatly for this. That being said, here's my beef with Motorola - not Verizon:
My Droid X has been replaced twice and yet the same issues have been duplicating. My WiFi connection is very unreliable (even in performance mode) and drops off every so often. My phone powercycles at least once a week (Motorola Devour, anyone?) and the lack of 2.2 is just a kick in the shin. Now, I can go and utilize the recently released ROM and {edit for TOS violation}. Heck, my friends who had the exact same issues have stated it's all gone {edit for TOS violation}. But it strikes me the wrong way that if I {edit for TOS violation} to fix the aforementioned problems, I also void my warranty. That is just not right at all.
So guess what MOTOROLA? I should've left you and never looked back after the RAZR. I activated my HTC Incredible back up and am selling my Droid X. I don't need these problems for the money I paid.
Verizon service, on the other hand, has always and remains to be good to me.
P.S. - I agree with the majority of the comments that people should be properly informed before any buying decision. But unless you're an official representative from VZW or Motorola, I don't appreciate the rude or pretentious comments. We're all paying customers and some have to be told more than the others. Deal with it.

I can't beleive that Verizon edited this post for the word that he used there.... yes I did read it before it was edited.
I hope they fixed the wifi issue. I had the first Droid and when they update to froyo 2.2 I could not connect to
our wifi network here at work. Even verizon support could not figure out whats wrong. I was able to get a Droid X
as an exchange for the old Droid.
First I would like to say I have never seen a bigger lot of impatient people in my life. I've had my X almost a month now and couldn't be happier. So you didn't get the phone the next day. So the big bad man in the store said late summer for the 2.2 update and it's not here yet wah wah wah. I'd like to do a survey, how many of the people complaining about the "delay" in the 2.2 update are under 30. Come on raise your hands, don't be shy. Just what I thought almost all of them. The me now generation its a lovely thing. Have some patience. It will serve you well later in life. I know I've been there. Chill.
Personally, I've goven up on the 2.2 upgrade and will probably not bother to download it when it becomes available. Well, I should say *if* it becomes available.
My device hasn't given me any major issues since I got it and I basically would install the 2.2 update for the audio fix only, I was hoping for a hot fix or one of the programmers using the leaked version would poke around in the code and identify what has been modified to increase the volume and maybe add the fix to a apk fix file so I really would even have to consider the update, I really don't think the update is worth jumping straight into anyway because I have heard enough issues come from the device users that already have it and the outcome doesn't look pretty.
I am not hyped over getting flash because I know how much of a resource hog it can be to render web pages, I believe there is going to be a number if people complaining about slower web browsing once the update comes out, this is really something to look forward to seeing.

First off, I'm 44 years old, if that's really even relevant to our predicament. And second off, there seems to be a disconnect between people like yourself who are happy with their phone and people like myself who are experiencing some of the widely reported issues that this phone has. There are issues that have been widely reported, such as wifi disconnecting, inaudible speaker volume, exchange, etc., etc. that this update is *expected* to fix. Some of us are very irritated that these issues haven't been fixed already. I do apologize if that upsets you, the happy owner. Just be glad you're not looking at this from the other side.
I came to the Droid X from an EnV3 and couldn't be happier. No major issues, battery life good for a smart phone and it all works (except for the smart profile). I got it on release date at a Verizon store and techs were very helpful with assisting me in setting up. I am looking forward to Froyo, it's the nature of the beast, just like I am always waiting for a new puter OS to release but I can wait without complaining too much and time is important to me........I'm 69.
i am quite sympathetic to the frustration level surrounding the release of froyo to the droid x. however, having been a software developer for over 30 years now, i also understand the indeterminate nature of software releases. when someone asks me "how long do you think that will take?" in regards to a non-trivial software release/update of some sort, my usual reply is "how long does it take to catch a fish?" (contributed by a coworker and friend).
that being said, if the rumors(?) regarding the reason for the delay are true, namely a problem with MS Exchange, and if that is the only real problem causing the holdup, then please tell me what would be wrong with making a general froyo release now, and then OTA an update with the MS Exchange fix later? that would put an immediate end to the frustration levels of those of us who could care less about the exchange problem, which from what i've seen would have to be the vast majority of droid x owners, and of course would take the pressure off the developers trying to fix the exchange problem. and trust me, having 30+ years of experience in the industry, nothing makes a software release take longer than undo pressure on the developers to hurry up and catch that fish!!!
I agree...... whats the big deal. the 2.1 version is working just fine. Let them test it and make sure it is going to do what it is supposed to. If you didn't want the phone with 2.1 you should have waited to get a Droid X until it came out with the 2.2 OS.
Froyo on DX: definitely before the end of September. Can't wait !
What I hope it will fix: connectivity issues on 3G and Wifi

Dudemandadsr...you should write Verizon's press releases next time.
Seriously though...i just don't get it. What are you saying? Are you implying that Motorola didnt manufacture one of the best devices last year in Droid 1? Oh...you are just pointing out that Verizon wants to sell products and services to consumers for profit? Did you say that The Android 2.2 operating system is going to be realeased at the end of the summer?
Sounds good to me.

There doesnt seem to be much reason with some of these posts and I am not the voice of reason myself but it's just amusing at times.
