Do I need them?
1 Verizon rep says Yes the other says No I am confused
I had an emegrency today and my Droid X did not work It locked and I could not move I could shut it off etc
Very frustrated It did finally come up but had a Red Circle with a line thru it and said No Service
Came back on after 1./2 hr and my battery was very busy draining down fast
Verizon rep said it was because there were 17 apps running How is this possible?

just because you stop using an app doesn't mean it's closed. wx, stock/news updates, email, texting, etc keep running.
i watch what i'm doing and don't use a task killer. if you kill the app, it'll come back the next time you access it.
many here will recommend not using one.

The only way to know if a app is active or not is by accessing the system task manager at Settings / Applocarions / Running Services.

RAM uses the same power whether it holds information or not. What matters is the processes... If an application running in the background is using processes then it is using battery("free" apps with advertisements uses processes). Apps can sit dormant and not use any processes until called upon(Dialer for example to make and receive phone calls).
ATK just shows you based on what libraries what are open. Often most of them don't even bother showing you if any of them are using processes, and which apps are sharing the same library. Dialer, Voice Mail, Text Message share the same library closing one may cause your radio to close and in turn waste more battery as the phone has to turn the radio back on, turn on the dialer, VoiceMail, and Text Message open all over again. Those are ALWAYS dormant until called upon.

@DDH
In order to get best experiance make sure to download the Advance Task Killer (FROYO) because the others do not function correctly on a device with 2.2 or higher... Actually if you activate the advance settings for ATK it does more that monitor what is open, a number of users do not understand the advance settings so this is defaulted to the off position, I have used ATK without so much as a hickup caused by the app, so many right the app off as useless because they just install the app and think it is suppose to resolve everything.
The app has to be configured to optimal performance by excluding required apps and configuring the auto kill option, I use the option to trigger kill command when phones backlight powers off and setup advance settings for auto kill.
Not everything is for everybody but taking the time to learn a app before making judgement would prove that a number of users are just quick to pass blame...

I had the ATK, but after reading all the pros and cons, I removed it. Truthfully, I find that my battery lasts for about 16 hours with or without the Killer.

+1
I have never used ATK since day 1. I just let the phone's OS do what it is supposed to do, and it seems to do it well. From time to time I experieince a lag (usually when it's waking back up after I unlock it). If I get an inordinate amount of lag, I laucnh my System Panel app and see what's stealing CPU cycles, and have the option to manually EXIT it.
YMMV

There are some free versions that you can try. If it works for you, great, if not, uninstall it.
Personally, I've used Advanced Task Killer since about 1 month after getting my phone. I get outrageous battery life, right now I missed a charge last night and I have 40% battery.
But I also do a lot of app testing and there are many apps that do not have an exit option. If you do a search of the forums I'm sure you can find all sorts of Yes and No's. But the best advice is to try it and if you see results you like, keep it.
