I figured people could post here to let other Charge users know when it starts rolling out.
Not yet, but it would be nice to manually pull it sometime later tonight
Not yet, I've been periodically checking though. Seeing as I'm an insomniac, I will be up late and let anyone know if I manage to pull it. I know we're all waiting with baited breath...Or maybe that's just me...
I ewwas told to expect it around noon today
Would that ne eastern or pacific time ???
this is bull
Not yet, i have checked for system update OTA every 20 minutes.
Called Verizon yesterday asked about the update and was told they have not received anything about the phone from the manufacturer yet..I hang up on the guy frustrated because different verizon people earlier in the week told me different.Went to the local verizon store right after and told them about the upcoming update and if I had the option to get it updated from the store - I was told its only available OTA and that I'd have to wait for the pop up on the phone. If anyone gets it, please post time and location if possible
They will be pushing the most stable build of Ep4 starting suposibly today mid-day OTA.
It can hit your phone any time startign today but can be a week from now. IT will pull your number and go based on numbers they have cued .
Hopefully a SD instalable will make it's way onto the internet soon. Usually that is a day or two later and peopel will mirror it to elviate bandwith over usage.
They may not let me post this here, or may since it is the official veriozon SD OTA
THis is a stock, verizon, all programs offcial OTA only. Requires install from SD card.
Regardless of the EP4D name it is newer then EP4P.
IF you currently have EE4, then you move the update fiel to the root directory (not into any folders) of your SD card via usb cable connected to the PC.
You place the phone in stock update recovery mode and update via SD card.
Recovery mode (stock) (volume up+ home,+power)

i woke up so early this morning hoping for the update to be prompted on my phone...hopefully i will get it by noon like everyone says
Follow the dangling carrot.....
This forum is going to be a very different place by tomorrow at this time. I'm excited to see what everybody thinks.
Aside from the bloat crap that is of course still there, this is one killer device now!
I just don't understand the holdup... They should just turn it over online and those who lack paitence.. *All of us here* We can download and install it.
20 min til 12 noon EST will reply back if the GB Gods want to provide us this treat.

Thanks. It worked great!
HoustonHeart,
Dumb question but would this be considered rooting the phone and void the warranty ?If we load the file from the website provided that is
I knew this was going to happen. Let the waiting game begin.
{please keep your posts courteous}
THis is the official build once installed.
It's almost central time 12:00 pm now...
What do you mean? You got it already?
freefl wrote: What do you mean? You got it already?
He didn't get it OTA.. he got a rom from [removed link] I don't know if it's official, he claims it is. I'm not risking it.
I saw this screen shot on another forum posted by someone who said they already had the new GB update. Looks good to me!
JerryF
C'mon folks, you know what they said, "If you watch the pot, the water will never boil" Be patient.. you get your GB by next week. "Follow the dangling carrot....
Don't bother going to the store to update it.I went in yesterday specifically to ask if I could get the upcoming update for my phone through the store when available.I was told no, its only OTA and they will be sending blocks for it- 1000 each time. Before I went to the store, I had called in verizon to check on the update progress, and they told me THEY HAVE NO RECEIVED any updates for the charge yet.
Now I don't know if that is just another verizon rep not knowing his crap, but this is getting sad..at least we got an official manual upgrade to do it from the sd card
ohh.... this is {please keep your posts courteous}
Samsung: It's not us it's Verizon...
Verizon: it's not us it's Samsung...
Me: Well someone is lying?!?!
My Dad got the 2.3 build on his Droid 2 (the freakin 2) back in September. HOW can a phone over a year old get an O/S update before the first Droid running on 4GLTE????? And now these two stupid IT departments are playing the "its not me its the other guy" game... I swear to God, Odin, Zues and Buddha I will NEVER, EVER, EVER by a Samsung Phone again, every single one has given me problems. I'm sticking to Moto or LG from now on.
" I will NEVER, EVER, EVER by a Samsung Phone again, every single one has given me problems. I'm sticking to Moto or LG from now on."
I second that! I'm right there with you and proabably most other Charge owners at this point as well.
Verizon has to authorize any updates through their network. Unfortuantly most techs on the phone know after it is startign to be pushed (you woudl think they would update their log files so when peopel ask they would see it on the screen).
If you are waiting on the OTA, be patient, it will cycle areas and device numbers then cue you. Most times new updates are pushed in the later evenings.
Yeah, I'm giving them til tomorrow night to at least confirm that SOMEONE has received it (preferably me) or it's my last Samsung phone ever and I'm going to consider leaving Verizon.

Fortunately I think you guys are a distinct minority. It's more than a bit over the top to get that annoyed about a day or two. (Now if you want to get annoyed about several months, ...)
By the way, I don't know about Moto, but I have stories to tell about LG's lies and incompetence concerning an LG I had. Fortunately Verizon came through by essentially allowing me a "return" on that phone well past the return period.
Why wouldn't an older phone get the update 1st? Makes sence to me. I bet the Droid 2 owners would be mad if the Charge got updated first. Its just a phone people.
Is anyone else having trouble synching their email right now? I have a gmail account and have been getting emails all day, but my last update on my Charge was at 12:30 and it's not even recognizing any new emails since then.
Could this be a sign of immanent Gingerbread?!
I was just told that the update is still being rolled out...
Yes, email has been progressively more goofy last few days.
Getting a gingerbrick report: http://androidforums.com/samsung-droid-charge/454243-gingerbread-ota-update-bricked-my-stock-android.html
I was lurking on another forum called "Charge Forums" and I found this.
{edited to comply with Terms of Service}
I have one question. Does anyone know if you use the file name SETUP.ZIP or do you change the name to UPDATE.ZIP before you move it to the SD card.
this might void your warranty if you mess this up ..personally ill wait for ota
rj57,
Thanks for the warning. I rechecked and see what you mean. I then downloaded "Update_EE4B_to_EP4D.ZIP."
It does look easy.
PS, NOTE TO OTHERS: In my previous post the filename UPDATE.ZIP is incorrect. It should be Update_EE4B_to_EP4D.ZIP.
griever could you please share this "back door" so all can try?
OK, I read in another part of the forum this:
m524c says:
"I called VZW to see if I could get the EP4 (Gingerbread) update. You can see the PDF on their site talks about it (goto verizonwireless.com select Support / Device / Droid Charge / update).
The VZW support is in the dark on this. I got transferred to a "data specialist." He tried to tell me like the first person that Samsung has to push the update out. I told them they are wrong and explained they had documentation on their site.... He gave me Samsung's number.
Samsung was more informed. They checked the version of my phone (EE4) and said "There is an update for your phone." "Oh, it just came out today. They don't update all the phones at once. You may have to wait 7-10 DAYS to get the update made available to you. There is no way to push it to your particular device."
As with VZW, Samsung did not care that this is my THIRD Charge - having sent the first two back for the same problems I still have with this one. .... well maybe EP4 will fix the issues..... here's hoping."
So maybe we have to wait 7-10 days?
That force update typically does not force it instantly, but it can cue your system for it. On average, expect up to a week to be cued, this may pop it sooner.
Now if there is slow down in the network because OTA's go over a main data net and not 4G/3G, then they will slow the release to phones.
Someone asked does EP4D change to a 3d moving interface....
No, those are customized and not part of the OS itself even thou the OS supports theming.
You can use Go Launcher EX.
Then pick your theme and change the animation to one like the swirling 3D icons page to page. It has the lowest over head of switchers.
I will say this I use it with the ICE Cream Sandwich theme and like it. No POO POO colored them. I like the replaced Icon buttons. I like the fact you can change the default launcher icons at the bottom to what ever you want. ANd in the APPS list it has the taskmanger for running apps/Downloads/clear memory right at the top so you don't need to go into task manager at all.
I had performed a factory reset before performing the update, even though I had never done anything fancy (root etc) with the phone. I just wanted to make things as clean as possible just in case, especially since I had never tied anything other than an OTA update before with a phone.
It took a while, but seems to go without a hitch. Rebooted back up, verified now as:
Firmware 2.3.6
Baseband Version i510.06 V.EP4
SCH-I510.EP4
Kernel Version 2.6.35.7-EP4
Build number SCH-I510.EP4
All seems fine to me........does it look like I did it right and is it legit? Sure was easy.

I was given the same info about 3 weeks ago, the rep told me to try the same # and also starting with a 3 instead of 2, it was actually a # for paging devices. if you just use *3432546 and send it tells you just that,. I think it's just a case of a rep telling you something to move you on to the next caller. Call center employees are graded on the # of calls they handle and not the resolutions. Sad but true.
When I just tried using the number, a notification popped up saying "Check In"I believe all the number is supposed to do is to help you receieve the update faster that you might have without it. Guess I'll find out.

Not entirely true, I work in a call center, and my performance is actually based on keeping calls under 6minutes and an average of 200 seconds over all... mind you though I am like tier 1 support,,, actually I;m more like tier .5 support. I genuinly do what i can for my customers, and I think the supervisor did try that.
I did download the touchpad dialer and I got in my notice a red triangle saying checkin sucessfull, but nothing else. maybe we were added to the queue? or moved to a different one? I hope we didn't screw ourselves.
Hey, that's my topic that is linked to on the android forums!!
http://androidforums.com/samsung-droid-charge/454243-gingerbread-ota-update-bricked-my-stock-android.html
It looks like i'm the only person on the internet to get gingerbread OTA??
See the topic for further details, but the short story is it downloaded OTA on a STOCK ANDROID 2.2 Charge, installed just fine in the 17-18 minutes the instructions said it'd take, then rebooted, then just sat there, and continued to reboot every 5-10 minutes for the next 1 1/2 hours. I tried the manual resets and took the battery out but nothing. Verizon finally did a hard reset using the volume keys, which erased EVERYTHING, but it finally, after 2 volume key hard resets, started back up and had gingerbread installed.
Luckily cloud services and my sd card had nearly everything backed up anyways and i've been thoroughly impressed with gingerbread.
Overall speed - EVERYTHING runs faster, smoother, and is just more enjoyable to use. All of the "lemon" talk about this phone will disappear with this update. Camera - Start up time may not be any different, but once focused, taking a picture and then a 2nd picture only has about 1.5 seconds between them, compared to what felt like easily 5+ seconds or more before.Redrawing the home screen - One of my biggest problems with the charge has been fixed. Exiting an app to the home screens, even when limiting the total # of them and widgets, still could take a good 1-2 minutes to redraw, despite using Go Launcher. It didn't always take that long, but it happened often enough to be a major pain. Redrawing is nearly instant most of the time and if it does need to redraw and it's not instant, it's a very very short wait compared to what it was before. I haven't tried really REALLY resource hogging programs so there's still a chance a few things may cause longer redraws.GPS - haven't been able to test yet
I recieved the notice on my phone around 8pm and clicked on install now (phine was plugged in, battery fully charged and connected to WIFI). The phone restarted and the screen was dark for about 1/2 hour. When it finally restarted I was still running ver. 2.2. I went to home > settings> about phone> systems update and it is telling me that I am running the current version. I called Verizon and they are telling me that this is a known problem and that the first step is to inform their tech department. The rep said I should hear back from them tomorrow with an answer.
I guess the good news is that the upgrade is pushing out. The bad news is it may not install.Hopefully the wait won't be much longer.
Anything yet?
Good morning --
Received 2.3.6 update upon powerup roughly 6am today (11/30). Phone was down for maybe ten minutes to do the install. So far so good. Upon a very cursory look it seems to draw the screens faster. Only no-big-deal ill effect so far is that it changed one ringtone on my Alarm Clock Extreme app.

It started rolling out yesterday, by miday a couple people I know had the OTA offered. By late evening another. I flashed a few for people that are scared of OTA's.
It should start being offered to more an more as they make sure it can distribute withut issues, if issues accur it will slow down again.
Saw the prompt at 7 AM today.Installation went by quick. Took about 15-20 min to go through. On my way to work I did a bit of playing around and noticed:
There is very little difference from the stock UI, menu's the same. I do not notice any big improvement with the scrolling and switching screens sideways on the menu- It still lagging a bit.
However switching between aps and going back to main menu and back to the running aps seems a lot quicker.
You get a yellow shadow if you scroll all the way up or down in the menusThe top list where the wifi, bluetooth, gps, data, auto roation is looks different.
On main screen, when you're going sideways, now you're going into a loop when switching screens.
Skype works awesomly well. You can switch back and fourth from front & back cameras on call. Tested this while driving 20 miles on video call no disconnection on 4G.
No problems so far
I'm in Scottsdale, Arizona, 11:22am here and my wife, nor I have been prompted for the update, we have tried pulling it down on both of our phones over 3g, 4g and wi-fi, no luck yet.
tstover,
Go read the thread "Finally, I did the manual update to Gingerbread 2.3.6....."
Please tell me how it went for you...okay?
DC5_K20Z1
Try my instructions. Look at my post, "FINALLY, I did the update to Gingerbread 2.3.6....."
If you can pull down your own copy of the update file you can use that or just use the one I used.
It went great.
Okay...im not sure what to believe but the verzion red i just called said its not available on any of android devices on verizon...soo im not sure
