I figured people could post here to let other Charge users know when it starts rolling out.
considered rooting and can void warranty
tstover,
They said it is the same one as VZ is releasing OTA. As I saw when I did the manual update, my phone was NOT rooted either before or after the update.
As a precaution, and this is just a little paranoid overkill, I downloaded the file 3 times and compared the file sizes just to help ensure myself that I received a good file. I say this is overkill because the file probably has its own internal checks to ensure completeness and prevent lost bits.
By the way a little bit of being paranoid is really good for you! Andy Grove the long time and very successful CEO at Intel said in his book and I quote, "Only the Paranoid Survive."

PS, I recently saw one bit of very bad news for all of us folks that own a Samsung Charge phone. The news is that Samsung has NOT included the Charge phone in the future update plans for the next OS version called Ice Cream Sandwich. Gingerbread 2.3.6 may be our first and final update for the life of this phone and that is to bad.
I'm being told that the more populated areas are getting the update first.
for those of you who want ICS for droid charge, you may want to look into getting a different device as the charge may not even be able to run it at all, the Galaxy Nexus may not even be the best phone out there when running ICS:

P.S. no gingerbread yet.

I wouldn't call it "very bad news", honestly its an "oh well" at best. The Charge, and all other devices in its class, we designed to run Android v. 2.0. The hardware is definitely going to be an issue when jumping to a new operating system, and this is to be expected. When an OS is revved a full version, it should incorporate the latest advancements in hardware, even shooting towards what is coming down the pipe. Multi-core processors, 1GB+ of RAM with faster timings, extended GPU instruction sets, etc.
What ends up happening in this situation, is that for compatibity sake there will be software-based modules that it will fall back on when the hardware isn't up to snuff. Now, not only is your device already overburdened by the demands of the new OS, it has to process a bunch of code that would normally be offloaded to a hardware component. Long story short, "Why is my device SO SLOW on this new OS?"
If Verizon gets us to a good, stable release of Gingerbread that will be the best thing until we get our next phones.
Maybe it's good news because we will not be upset and worrying about getting a new update.
We probably will just buy a new phone.
Gee, I wonder if that's what Samsung and Verizon want us to do???
Thanks Hustonheart for the info. I also read somewhere that at one time Samsung/Verizon might skip gingerbread and go right to icecream sandwitch for the droid charge...
know ever knows about update thill they happen!!
I love my phone and i have none of the problems others are having. I hope GB is the same way when I get the OTA

OK UPDATE:
I, personally still have not gotten this, but i just got off the phone with a Tech and got some really interesting news.
1) the *#*#2432546#*#* is a semi-urban legend... The tech told me it spells out checkin and will give the notification but has never heardf of it actually forcing an update. (kinda like those buttons for the walk signs at crosswalks. they are there but never work.
2) The update IS getting pushed by Samsung and Google (example used, Samsung and Google are a car, and Verizon is just the road travelled)
3) The ZIP.file is NOT considered rooting the phone, However was advised that it is a buyer-beware issue. I was told that it is not rooting the phone, but that unless you know the source it could do harm, and only try it if you a knowledgable enough to undo it if need be.
4) Verizon in no way can force the update. Was told turthfully it's best to let nature take it's course. We know the update went live and that people are starting to get it, it's just a matter of patience of when it fianally hits your given device.
I have been a Verizon customer for 16 years. I have had the Charge since May. I live in the 253 area code. Still no Gingerbread.
From what I've heard tonight at 11:59PM more of the roll out will be pushed, but who knows if there is really any truth to that or not. I'm thinking about doing it through my PC with the update.zip.
Where are you getting this info from? could you post the link?
UMFootball, I'm sorry I do not have the link, but somone on one of these threads for Gingerbread posted a transcript which someone over on the XDA sight had posted about information regarding the GB OTA Roll Out. It stated that around noon time the roll out would begin to 1k customers on 11/29, then at 9pm another 19k customers, then that would be the "soak" process, they would see how it goes, then tonight at 11:59pm they will push more, around 100k from what I understand and then Friday 12/2 they will up it even more. But I do not know who got this and from whom it came from, but so far it seems to be within reason of what has been happening. But it could all be **bleep**....I dunno. I would just like to GB love!!
Green, here you go:

Well I guess tomorrow will be the day that I get it since i havnt yet...
Yea I'll be looking around 10pm and 11pm tonight here in Arizona, because they may be rolling it out to another 100k at 11:59PM EST tonight and then more Friday from what I understand.
Maybe the AZ folks will be having some gingerbread for our late night snack tonight. Hope so but probably should find some Oreos just in case the gingerbread doesn't show up.
Yeaaaa!! Party time tonight maybe
im really stating to have doubts about getting this update ota as i havnt gotten it yet
Hey, UMFootball, just like waiting for final BCS rankings.
I just received it this morning. Took about 19 mins to install. The install didn't seem to have any problems/glitches. But, the update seems relatively unimpressive so far. It doesn't even have video chat for GoogleTalk (which is one of the main features I was eager to see)! What the . . .?!? The phone has a front-facing camera for crying out loud! If you're holding your breath for something great, go ahead and exhale.
So far, I've only seen some minor UI changes. I haven't had the upgrade installed for very long yet (about an hour or so), so there's not much more to report at this time.
Grand Rapids, MI
rec'd in West Palm Beach, FL. Literally got it this am so not much to report except the phone definitely feels faster. Time will tell. Hold on folks, it's coming!!
My girlfriend got hers this morning. OTA went without any problems. Took about 15 minutes and the phone rebooted to Gingerbread goodness. All apps were still in place, all contacts still there. Did not lose anything. Had to do nothing to her phone to get it to where it was before OTA. Did not have much time to play with it but it appears the keyboard is different, the quick options in the notification bar is different in color, and the browser has a slightly different look. As for improved functionality of the phone I don't know as like I said, not much time to play. Now, I just have to wait for mine. Hopefully tomorrow. I am in western New York.
For me, there was nothing in the notification bar that was relevant to the update. Just the popup in the middle of the screen.
YES !! I got my updatw this moring. all went well finish in about 20 min.
Hope everyone gets the update soon !!
Nothing for me yet. I'm starting to feel like this is a cruel hoax.
Well I still got nothing here in NJ and my Dad in NYC same thing.
