Backup Assistant Inconsistencies

For forever, I thought my problems with my 1500 contacts expanding to over 10,000 was from HTC Sync.  So I quit syncing with Outlook for awhile while I cleaned out the duplicate contacts and the multiple truncated addresses, which only took about 3 weeks.  However, in the process, I noticed that many of the duplicates came back!  Turns out it was Backup Assistant restoring bad data.  So I went to the BA website to delete the duplicates there, but the website shows no contacts at all - blank!  I try syncing and after a while get a message that it's synced, but nothing changes on my phone or the website from the exercise.  So I disabled all syncing on the phone while I cleaned out the bad data yet again (another couple weeks), but I have to disable all syncing functions, because if I don't, Backup Assistant syncs anyway, even if it's been disabled - possessed, I say!  So where are these duplicates with bad data coming from?  How can I clean out the bad data if it's not on the website?  How do I get the website to show what's actually on the phone?

Hello Mapamagician,

When Backup Assistant sync is enabled on the phone does it confirm the sync was successful? Does Gmail contain your contacts as well? There are different levels of access to the online account. To log in are you using your phone number or an actual user name? If your line is not the Account Owner you will want to register your line for Account Member access to view your contacts.  You can check under the Profile to see if your number is the Account Owner. I would be more than happy to discuss this further and make sure your contacts sync properly. Please let me know if I can assist further.

I do typically get confirmation that BA sync was successful, but nothing changes on the phone or the website.  I don't have contacts on Gmail (as far as I know, at least), only Outlook.

I went for a long time without enabling Backup Assistant syncing on the phone, and all was well, but I missed the auto-syncing of other functions, and couldn't get the other functions to auto-sync without Backup Assistant.  Turned it back on, and in about a week, I got the Memory Full warning on the phone, and sure enough, 9000 contacts again.  <sigh>.

Hello Mapamagician,

When did you first sync your contacts to the Backup Assistant? If you have not synced your contacts since 2/22/2010, you were not transferred to the new Backup Assistant platform. As a result, you will not be able to sync your contacts or view contacts on the website. Alternatively, if the contacts are in an external application such as Outlook, they can be imported as a CSV file to the Backup Assistant. Once they appear on the site, you can sync from site and it will only sync what is stored there. This should correct the duplicate issue. Below are the instructions on how to transfer contacts from Outlook to the Backup Assistant:

- Navigate to the Verizon Wireless website, enter the 10-digit mobile number and password then click Sign In.

- Navigate My Verizon > Back Up My Contacts (under My Device).

- If prompted, enter an e-mail address, re-enter the e-mail address then click Save.

- Click Import Contacts.

- Click Browse.

- Navigate to the desired file then click Open.

From a Macintosh computer, click Choose.

- Click Import.

- Click Import.

- Click OK.

- Click OK.

Thank you,

Lena A.
