Backup Assistant stopped working on my Samsung Charge with both Auto-Sync and Manual mode. I get the error message "Sync Service Failed - Failed to read data from Android Contacts Provider". Any solutions to how to fix this?
Hi, Tresninos5!I know what a bummer it is not having the contacts backed up! Let's try this: Go to Settings> Applications> Manage Apps> All> Backup Assistant, then tap 'Clear cache/Clear data', then reboot the device and retry the back up. If possible, uninstall and reinstall the app if the above steps fail. Keep me posted!Thanks!AdamE_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
That worked!. My contacts are backing up again.
Thanks so much!
mine is doing the same thing and I just tried this and it did not work... I get Error code 10??
this didn't work for me...why the heck have i wasted an afternoon on this??
Hi Jungleprincess!Yikes, sorry that did not work for you. I know troubleshooting can be time consuming, but we definitely want to get your issue resolved. What happened when you tried the above steps? Did you receive the same error message? Can I have you Go to Settings> Applications> Manage Apps> All> Sync Service then tap 'Clear data/Force stop'. Let me know if this helps.Thanks,Pamelaf_vzw
Thank you Verizon finally after months the above helped and it synced

Coincidentally I found this thread while googling Verizon Sync Service Error while I was on the phone with a first-level Verizon rep who was trying fruitlessly to fix the problem. by the time I got transferred to a Tech rep, I had followed your instructions and that fixed the sync, which is a good thing because I then lost the connection with the rep, while on my Verizon FIOS landline, I might add.
By the way, the rep just called me back and I told him what happened. He got a laugh out of that and said they often google for the same reason to see if it is a known problem.
Next time I'll turn to forums first.
Hey Guys & Gals to get a bit more protection for your coveted "Contacts List" back your Contacts up to your SD Card too. Here is how to do it. It is so easy that even I can do it!!!
Go to your Contacts list.. Then press the MENU button at the bottom left corner of your phone. Next touch the "Import/Export" icon. Then touch "Export to SD Card." That's it, they are now saved on your SD Card.
If you want to see the saved file go to the Home screen and touch the APP icon "My Files." Then go down the list of folders to the folder named "external_sd" and touch it. Your Contacts file backup will be named "00001.vcf" and so on for further backups.
See what I mean, this may be the easiest procedure you've ever done on your Charge Phone!

I am having the same problem for weeks now. I've went through all the steps several times, deleted backup assistant plus, still will not work. Help!
As an added note, I have also tryed to backup from the verizon wireless site, the phone is recieves the query, but immediately goes to error.
I have two droid Charge phones and both of them are having this problem. I tried the above instructions with no luck on either phone.
My phone decided today that it was going to delete all the contacts for some dumb reason. All my contacts are on Verizon wireless.com contact list, but I can't sync to download them.
Frustrating for sure!
For those of you that are still having problems as I was with the above recommended solution. Here is what worked for me and hopefully it will work for you also. Make sure you know your PIN before you start the below action.
Go to, Settings> Applications> Manage Apps> All> Backup Assistant, then tap 'Clear data, then tap 'Force Stop'
Go to, Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>All>Sync Service, then tap 'Clear data, then tap 'Force Stop'
Open backup Assistant and tap 'Backup Now'. You should be prompted to input your PIN.
Good Luck!

This worked perfectly. Thank you!
What happens if you don't know your PIN? Was there a default it was originally set to?
Log into your on-line MyVerizon account, then click on Manage Contacts. Once the page loads, click the gray View PIN button in the upper right-hand corner and you'll get a pop-up with your PIN.
keep geting sync service failed
failed to read data from android contacts provider
Now I lost all my contacts, just out of the blue.... is there some thing wrong with android agan ?
I kept getting Error 10 message. I did what was suggested in #5 and rebooted my phone, then went top Backup Assistant app and had it back up contacts, which it did, and it then told me that all is good with sync. Yippee! Sometimes it is just that simple.
