Sure you can buy additional batteries.

As for making it through the day, that will be based on what porgrams you keep running all the time and how much the unit is used. I can most days make it through the day without an issue.

You can purchase the external battery for the phone below:

Amazon External Battery Incredible

Also check out this yahoo article-->Tips To Keep Battery Going & Going.   There is also an app in the market called Power Manager Full for only 99 cents. That should extend your battery

I had the same problem trying to get through a day without charging the battery....I changed the brightness setting on the phone to a lower setting and my battery lasts a lot longer then before...of course having a task killer helps as well...

HTC has an extended battery with enclosure now (2100 I think, cost about $75).

Make sure vibrate responses are turned off, turn down brightness, and get an app killer to auto-kill apps after a time period.

I can last at least 12+ hours. I also did this procedure:

  1. Charge the phone with it on until the indicator turns green.
  2. Remove the charger and power off the phone
  3. Charge the phone with it off until the indicator turns green.
  4. Remove the charger and power on the phone.
  5. Charge the phone with it on until the indicator turns green.

I think it helps.

The original Droid Incredible battery does indeed suck. What I did was buy a package off eBay that includes two generic 1500maH batteries + charger for $10 with free shipping. At first I thought these batteries would be of short lasting quality but I have to say that I've been pleasantly surprised. At work we have wifi so I'm able to keep it on wifi for 8-10 hours. On my way home I swap batteries and I'm full til' I recharge at night.

I ran a detailed series of tests with different configurations to evaluate battery usage. With the stock battery running default settings and moderate use, the std battery lasted only about 8 hrs before needing a charge. I also practice the "bump charging" described above which works to add another hour of usable battery life.

This provided all basic services for my needs taking full advantage of most capabilities. I did not use any navigation or web browsing during this period.

Location tracking (GPS on)

Gmail push notifications (on)

Visual Voice Mail (on)

Wireless Networking (on)

Auto Synch (on)

Wifi off

No Social Networking or related auto updating, ie FB & Twitter

So people reporting 4-6 hrs of battery life seems quite real if they are heavy users, with lots of automated messaging, web use, etc.

Here is where I ended up which works well for my personal needs, others will obvisously have different preferences.

Location tracking (GPS off)

Gmail push notifications (on)

Visual Voice Mail (on)

Wireless Networking (on)

Auto Synch (off)

Wifi off

No Social Networking or related auto updating, ie FB & Twitter

Turning off the GPS and Auto Synch was the largest consumer of power. With this configuration I easily get 16 hrs of use on a std battery. I then upgraded to the Seido 1750mAH battery and I can go a full 24 hours. This is all with normal use during the day, placing a number of calls. I will manually synch a few times during the day. If I need GPS functionality I turn it on.

In summary, I have no problem with battery performance for my needs, some compromise, but I have a very workable device. I do not need to manage and APP killing, or background tasks, other than shutting off certain auto updating. All the added functionality comes at the expense of battery life. Of course, improvments will also come in the core O/S for power managment going forward. I am fine with charging when I go to bed. When travelling and not having access to a charge source, I carry the std batt with me. Not a problem.
