Hi, my battery has been getting drained pretty quickly.
What applications/processes are necessary to keep open and which ones can be shut down?
Any other tips/hints for conserving battery life?

turn your brightness down as much as possible, I also turned off audiable touchtones and haptic feedback.
you can get the advanced task killer app if you don't already. it's no use killing the apps that automatically start back up, but you can kill your browsers or any other downloaded apps after you are done using them. with decent usage i get about a day out of my battery.

Screen Timeout setting is a big one for this as well...shorter the better.
(Menu>Settings>Sound & display>Screen timeout)
Also you can take advantage of the Battery Manager feature under Settings menu that let you customize a period of time (i.e. when your are sleeping) where data syncing will be disabled to save battery (Battery Profile Options).
TIP: Set the wakeup time for 10-15 minutes before you actually wake up that way phone can catch up before you start using it.
