Brand New Droid X off and on.... constantly.

Okay, so my phone is shutting off and on, constantly. I mean it will turn on and then just as it turns on and the red "Droid" comes on, it shuts down again. Then it powers up again right away, and shuts down right away again. It does this cycle for about 20 minutes, then works fine. This started a couple days ago, but yesterday it was fine. Now it's doing it again for about the past half hour. Has anyone else experienced this exact propblem? I might add that it seems to do this either as I am charging it, or just after I completed charging it.

I figured since this is a brand new phone (I paid brand new price 1 month ago of $149.00, the bill not even due yet) it would still be under warranty. So I went into my Verizon store and they said they will send me a different one. Well, it won't be new, it will be used. I, of course, expressed my anger of paying NEW price 1 month ago only to get a used one as a replacement (if I had wanted a used one, I had the option when I bought this one and renewed my contract for a discounted price, but I opted for new). I feel as though I am being ripped off. This is truly one of the first times I have been very angry with Verizon. I would really like to try to resolve this problem if at all possible... I don't want a USED phone for the NEW price.

I know there have been a few people who have had similar problems, but I am looking for someone who may have actually experienced this EXACT same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So let me get this straight. You want to trade your used phone (you've had it for over a month so it is not new any more) for a new phone and VZW wants to replace your used phone with a used/refurbished phone, so now your mad. That doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. When you paid for a new phone didn't they give you a new phone? So now that you have passed your 15 day return period, why would they replace it with brand new?

As for the issue you are having with the phone itself, have you had the battery tested?

Reboot in Safe Mode and if it stops rebooting, start un-installing apps.

Instructions for rebooting in safe mode can be found by doing a search (which might have been a good idea anyway), or someone may post the link or instructions.

Edit: Nevermind. Found this from one of Cody's posts.

Safe Mode - allows you to boot the phone without loading most 3rd Party Apps. Allows you to "test" to see if a problem you are having was introuced by some APP you installed. Especially useful if you're having a problem that is reproduceable.

To get into SAFE MODE:

1. Power off the phone

2. Press and HOLD the MENU button (far left bottom button)

3. Continue to HOLD the Menu button and power up the phone, but continue holding the Menu button during the boot up.

4. The Phone will eventually come up saying "SAFE MODE" in the lower left corner. Release the Menu button.

Run some tests to see if your problem goes away. If still present, consider a RESET per the instructions posted by Wildman.

To get out of SAFE MODE, just power off and on as you normally would.

I agree its a app causing issue, but since you cant get past the eye you may have to hard reset...

Safe Mode Access:

1. Power Off

2. Hold Menu button on lower left and press power

3. Keep holding Menu until screen shows Safe Mode in bottom left

4. You will be in Safe Mode at this time

To exit Safe Mode power off and back on...

Give safe mode a try and if it doesnt work try following instruction below to reset and wipe the device, this will restore you to stock..

Power Device Off First.....

1. Hold Home Button and press power

2. Screen will show a Android with a triangle with astrick

3. Let Go of Home Button and Power

4. Press Search Button (Far Left Button)

5. A blue menu will show at top of page, scroll to Format Device

6. Select Yes to verify

7. Allow format to complete (Information at bottom of page will go through a few steps)

8. Once Format is complete Blue Menu will show at top again, select Reboot

Note: Use volume up and down to select opinion and use camera button as Enter,,,

With all due respect sir, the OP says the dreaded eye problem comes and goes. Maybe, when it isn't and is "working fine", the Safe Mode reboot could be used.

But, ultimately, something may be so tweeked that a Hard Reset is the best option, so once again, the wildman rules.

I caught that droirsw but since they reported it takes 20 minutes at times to get it to finally boot I just gave another option if they dont want to go through the wait process... But I get yout point..

Update....

So I received my used phone, and I am having the same issues as the new phone. So guess what.... I have 3rd phone being delivered tomorrow. The 2nd day I got the used phone, it started doing the same thing as the NEW phone did, only worse. It started freezing up, shutting down in the middle of calls, texts, browsing, etc. There was no pattern to the crashes.

As far as the apps go, I have an antivirus and no issues, I did not install apps for the whole first couple of days... it was even shutting down WITHOUT having any 3rd party apps in it. I did the factory reset on the phone with them, I even replaced the SD card, you name it.

Without sounding rude CRB79, when I purchase something brand new, I really expect it to last longer than 3 weeks. If someone purchased a TV or a computer (at full price) and it stopped working after a few weeks of use, would anyone be okay if they were sent a used replacement? My bill for the NEW phone wasn't even due yet! I decided on the new phone (instead of the certified) because I didn't want any issues.... had I known this was going to happen, I would have purchased the used one to begin with at a third of the price. Again, not trying to sound rude, but that is how I look at it.

I guess I will see how my 3rd "new" phone performs.

There is a return policy of 14 days and after 14 days you will recieve a remanufacture device that is within the contracts agreement, so everything that has been reported is correct. The issue is that you appear not to be prepared to hear the answer being given but if you recieve a device and the same issue is happening then there has to be a common factor and it sounds like the device isnt the issue.

You can try hard resetting the device following the attached method and do not restore any software and see if the issue stops are you can continue to return devices over and over and blame the device, all info appears to lean to a unsupported application.

Follow these settings during restore to avoid issues being restored automatically.

1. Uncheck "Back up my data" under Settings/Privacy

2. Click Factory Data Reset/Reset Phone

3. After reset is complete only Active Phone but do not input Google Email information

4. Once phone is at homepage go back into Settings/Privacy and make sure the Automatic Restore option is unchecked, even if grayed out, activate "Back up my data" and quickly disable "Automatic Restore"

5. After being sure that the Automatic Restore option is off it will be safe to log into Google and you can continue installing preferred apps and custom settings.

This process will stop all applications and settings from restoring automatically and restoring original issues that usually resolve a number of issues.

You may also want to try a different battery and/or sd card since those two parts carryover through replacement devices.

The hard reset is a good idea too.

I would to like thank the community for helping bayleeann. After researching, I found the constant power cycle issue has been acknowledge with multiple devices and being corrected in the upcoming software update. It's noted the update is currently in testing, and planned for release early June 2011. While I don't have an exact date, I did want to share that with you so you can at least know the issue will be resolved soon. As with past updates, they are pushed to groups of users at a time; once the update is ready for your phone, you will see a notification directly in your display panel.

In the meantime, try this temporary fix that worked for a customer- the problem did not occur while phone was on a charger. After we changed the backlight settings to always on, the phone has not shut off since. Hope this helps you for now.

As much I wish I was referring to gingerbread, I must be clear I'm referring to a manufacturer firmware update not android OS software. I know there's great anticipation of gingerbread and apologize for the misunderstanding.

P.S. I did check the latest news for gingerbread on the Droid X in our resources and there's no info as today at 5:02 pm CST.

Hi all, I just wanted to follow up with great news gingerbread 2.3 is here for the Droid X! Starting on May 27, the update will be pushed to groups of users daily, then as of June 1 everyone that didn't get the notification can download it manually. You are more than welcome to check in the meantime- Settings > About phone > System updates

There are various reports from "leaked" versions of it that several ongoing issues in the current OS are fixed. Also other things like the performance of the phone is better, as is battery life, blur is improved (don't go there), et al ... But so far, all rumours and speculation. that being said, just like any other operating system (think WINDOWS or iOS), software is updated from time to time for (hopefully) IMPROVING things, and not making them worse.... So we can only hope and time will tell.

Can anyone send me the update.zip file, where is it? I am running the leaked version 4.5.588. I have not gotten a notification, and it says that I am up to date, even though I'm not. HELP!
