I have been to the local Verizon Store in Panama City Florida six times complaining about the poor quality focus and exposures of my droid's. My complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
Each of the first 5 times I was told to just play with the camera and given the brush off to move along.
The 6th time to the store the sales person told me if the camera feature was important to me that she would never have recommended the droid's. She then showed me her droid's and the pictures were the same as mine.
Obviously the camera is defective and my research is telling me this is consistent with many of these devices. Sad part is otherwise the phone is great.
Oh yeah, I updated the software and that did not resolve the issues.
Bottom line camera is bad the droid's is a defective device. What are my options to resolve this? Replace the droid's with another droid's? Get a different phone. Verizon sold me on this phone with the pitch "large screen, 8mp camera, etc." This device falls short of the hype!

Howdy neighbor. Which Droid do you have? The Droid X? If so, the X does take pretty good pictures in well lit situations. In low light, it does leave a bit to be desired, unless you're close to the subject. I know you were told to play with the camera, so did you try the various scenes, the exposure settings, the resolution? Additionally, sometimes the pictures look better when viewed on a computer than they do on the phone.
Have you tried a camera app? I've heard that Vignette and Retrocamera are pretty good. (I've not tried them.)
When it all comes down to it, this is first and foremost a phone. While it is convenient to have a camera with this phone, if I know I'm going to need to take good quality pics, I'll bring my digital cam. So, I may not be able to quickly capture a photo of any UFOs over Gulf Breeze, but I can get some good beach pics.

Peter i know at times the cameras on the X if that is what U have are not the Best But u have to remember a few vatal things on it were u are at. At the time u take the picture the light in front an behind you. an if your using ur flash an i once read that using ur flash out side even on a bright sunny day will help when taking pictures with X . Now there are times that my Droid Incredible does a little better than the X does even in dark Rooms. So before you give up on it Totally Experiment with it a little More. Try different Settings an see if this helps. An if you got more questions feel free to ask.

+1 with the other comments. Low light = poor pics. High-lit = decent pics. Definitely play with the settings - bump the ISO. make sure you have "steady cam" set ... I bought the APP called Vignette (you can try the free version first) ... it has a TON of settings that the stock camera APP doesn't have, including Steady Shot ... but the amount of options can be overwhelming for some. Pics definitely look better on my computer vs. the phone .... I didn't buy this phone to replace my DSLR camera ... ymmv.

It does sound like you have either a bad camera on your phone or not using the proper settings. For normal light situations I set the Flash to On and exposure -0- and ISO to auto. With those settings and subject about 2-4 ft away I take EXCELLENT pictures.
If the pictures start showing a little grainy adjust the exposure and take test shots until the grainy picture has gone away. In a dark room with flash and my exposure set properly I can take a non-grainy picture at a distance of 4-6ft.
If you are having issues with blur, adjust your ISO to a faster setting such as 800. For focus issues, hold the camera button halfway down to enable to auto-focus, once the picture has focused on your subject press down completely.
