It's not a true 8MP camera.  It rescales 2MP picture to 8MP and stores it into flash memory.

It may have a focusing issue but it could be an attempt to hide the fact it's not a true 8MP camera.

The camera is probably a 2MP webcam.

I should know, I bought the Droid X specifically for the 8MP camera and my former LG Dare (3MP) camera takes better pictures.

TI might have sold Motorola the chipset, but it's Motorola's responsibility to verify the parts live up to specs or Verizon to make sure the device lives up to specs.  Odviously, American made products are lacking attention to detail and quality control is taking a back seat to marketing.

Disregarding the first posted "answer", It could be a number of reasons your camera will not focus. The most obvious one is a bad chip. There may also be a scratch on the lens. My question is did you push the camera button correctly? Pushing the button half way focuses the camera, then, without letting it up, push it all the way to take the picture. In other words it's a two step process. I would certainly take the phone back to a Verison store and have them check it out.

TaeSong, when are you going to provide proof for your repeated statements?  The Droid X contains a OmniVision OV8812 8 Mp, 1.4 µm pixel, CMOS image sensor.   There's no way this picture is 2mp quality: http://www.androidcentral.com/sites/androidcentral.com/files/articleimage/684/2010/06/droid-x-camera...

As for the focus, it is correct that you need to hold the camera button halfway down to enable auto-focus.  Also while you are holding down the button you can touch the focus target and it will auto focus on that location.

Yea, agreeing with others, the FOCUS really should happen automatically when you press/hold the button. If it is not doing that, i would take it to the VZN store and have them check it out - possibly reproduce the issue while at the store ... If you just got the phone, they should replace it with another new one. (<30 days old).

Aside from that, I must say that the picture on mine leaves a bit to be desired. I even purchased/installed the Vignette APP just to get more "control" on various settings that the stock CAMERA APP does not provide. Even when I tweak the settings for optimum quality, the resultant pictures don't even come close to what the iPhone 3 images look like on my friend's phone. Really too bad given the specs on this DX camera. But thankfully I didn't buy this phone to take pictures in lieu of my Canon 30D DSLR.  Good luck.

I tried the Vignette app last night and the quality from it was VERY lacking even when set to 8mp and superfine.  I took a matching picture with it and the stock app.  The stock picture was much better.

Have you tried setting your ISO to 100?  It is a slower film speed which can produce a more vivid image if the target is stationary.  If you are taking a picture of a moving picture you go towards the 800 end, with 800 speed being an action photo setting.

yea, I've tried all the ISO settings in Vignette, as well as AUTO  ...  Indoor shots are horrible, grainy etc ..

A few things... 1. You might need to play with all the settings to see what produces the best picture. I've never seen a phone with so many settings similar to a regular camera. 2. Wipe off the camera lens if you want to take a special picture. For some reason I have a habit of rubbing my finger over the lens when the phone is in my hand, and that sometimes smudges the lens. 3. This is a smart PHONE. If you need to take pics of special events, get a camera.

It's not a true 8MP camera.

It's my opinion it's really a 2MP webcam camera.

The focus problem is actually to cause an antialiasing effect to hide the fact it's using a webcam.

If you want a decent picture with Droid X, you need a lot of light, clear sign it's using a CMOS image sensor.

Don't be surprise if there is a product recall.

If you get the option get a HTC EVO as a replacement it has the OmniVision OV 8MP camera.

Sorry to burst your bubble TaeSong, but I have taken some VERY GOOD PICTURES IN SUBDUED LIGHTING. So much so that my friends oohed and ahhed at them. By the way, I wouldn't take an HTC as a gift. Had one, just one, which didn't stay in my possession long because I brought it back.

MORTB - I'm curious as to which camera APP you're using and what settings you use in subdued lighting? Are you also using the FLASH?  Reason I ask is that I can't get very good pics in low-light ...  Outdoors they tend to be fine with the additional light.

thanks

I've had luck with low light pictures by turning on the flash and playing with the exposure setting, this was with the stock app.  The Vignetta app seems to take pretty grainy low light pictures.

Or keep the Droid X and get a camera.

Yeah,  I can't count the number of times I've had Verizon phone problems and Verizon tech support offered me the option of a Sprint phone!

I don't know what's more ridiculous, the 2mp webcam idea, the fact that they tell them to get it replaced with a Sprint phone, or the fact that they are telling people to go for a phone which has the SAME EXACT CMOS processor.

Maybe TaeSong hasn't followed the fact that CMOS processors are every bit as good as CCD processors now.

I haven't tried a HTC EVO so I won't be able to tell you for sure.

I didn't say anything about processors, I said image sensors.

Don't get me wrong... I do like  the Droid X, being a computer service technician and all, but it has some weaknesses that needs resolving.

It has a rather short battery life for a mobile phone and it didn't have the 8MP quality camera that I bought it for, making it fairly usless as a mobile phone with a 8MP camera.

Combination of Google Map, internet connection and GPS receiver makes it a very nice GPS device.  The battery life is infact comparable to a standard GPS device.

The available apps and sensors make it a nice little toy, but what happens when the novelty wears off.

I use the 3G network to connect to the internet more than I make phone calls, infact I rarely ever make phone calls anymore.

Once again, you have no idea what you are writing about.  The HTC EVO has the same CMOS chip that the Droid X has.

And why on Earth would VZW offer their customer a Sprint exclusive phone as a replacement.
